SummaryThe ability to recognise fear is impaired in people with damage to the amygdala and, interestingly, in adult psychopathy. Here we confirm that deficits in recognising fear exist in children with psychopathic traits. We show for the first time that, as with patients with amygdala damage, this deficit can be temporarily corrected by simply asking them to focus on the eyes of other people. These data support models of psychopathy that emphasise specific dysfunction of the amygdala and suggest an innovative approach for intervening early in the development of psychopathy.

Utilizing a photolabile ligand as MOF strut can make a framework undergo full or partial decomposition upon irradiation. For the first time, a nitrophenylacetate derivative has been incorporated into MOF as a backbone linker via PLSE method. The photo-induced decarboxylation of the NPDAC-MOF represents a novel way of degrading a MOF, which provides an innovative approach to formulating photoresponsive porous materials with potential applications in molecular release and drug delivery. When photoactive linker is mixed with non-photolabile linker via partial PLSE, the MOF structure can be retained after irradiation, but with the introduction of multiple defects, offering a new method to create vacancies in MOFs. Defect repair can be achieved by treatment with replacement ligands, the scope of which is an interesting area for developing customizable MOF contents.<br>

The karyotype structure and banding patterns of the polytene chromosomes of Propsilocerus akamusi from China are investigated for the first time. Photographic maps of the three chromosomes of P. akamusi are presented. Three heterochromatic blocks in the centromere regions are characteristic of this species. Chromosomal polymorphisms were not found in the Chinese populations. Cytogenetic data support the phylogenetic argument previously outlined for the genus.

Until the appearance of his Piano Sonata in 1946, and Sonata for Violoncello and Piano in 1948 Carter seemed to lack a distinctive voice. Aaron Copland, a close friend, taunted Carter about the “difficulty” of works that Carter had tried to make accessible, and did not mention Carter in an important 1948 article on emerging composers. Carter’s music at this time, however, was moving in new directions. The two sonatas for the first time deploy the distinctive formal and contrapuntal techniques of his mature style. Their idioms also reflect Carter’s realignment with ultra-modernism in his renewed friendship with Varèse and involvement with the publication and performance of Ives’ works. The appearance of metrical modulation in the Cello Sonata, an innovative approach to rhythmic organization, also sprang from Rudolf Kolisch’s study of tempo in Beethoven’s music.

A series of radiocarbon dates for Early Bronze Age contexts from the excavations at Kouphovouno are published for the first time. By adopting a Bayesian modelling approach, the 14C estimates allow greater precision in arriving at an absolute chronology for the period. The opportunity is taken to place these dates as part of the more general development of the Early Bronze period. The sequence for mainland Greece is compared with the recently revised dating of the Early Cycladic period. The new data support a lower chronology than that advocated in recent publications.

Abstract. We propose an innovative approach for analysing ground-based FTIR spectra which allows us to detect variabilities of lower and middle/upper tropospheric HDO/H2O ratios. We show that the proposed method is superior to common approaches. We estimate that lower tropospheric HDO/H2O ratios can be detected with a noise to signal ratio of 15% and middle/upper tropospheric ratios with a noise to signal ratio of 50%. The method requires the inversion to be performed on a logarithmic scale and to introduce an inter-species constraint. While common methods calculate the isotope ratio posterior to an independent, optimal estimation of the HDO and H2O profile, the proposed approach is an optimal estimator for the ratio itself. We apply the innovative approach to spectra measured continuously during 15 months and present, for the first time, an annual cycle of tropospheric HDO/H2O ratio profiles as detected by ground-based measurements. Outliers in the detected middle/upper tropospheric ratios are interpreted by backward trajectories.
