When the transmission electron microscope was commercially introduced a few years ago, it was heralded as one of the most significant aids to medical research of the century. It continues to occupy that niche; however, the scanning electron microscope is gaining rapidly in relative importance as it fills the gap between conventional optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy.IBM Boulder is conducting three major programs in cooperation with the Colorado School of Medicine. These are the study of the mechanism of failure of the prosthetic heart valve, the study of the ultrastructure of lung tissue, and the definition of the function of the cilia of the ventricular ependyma of the brain.

Advanced Styrenic resins are being developed throughout the industry to bridge the properties gap between traditional HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) and ABS (Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene copolymers) resins. These new resins have an unprecedented balance of high gloss and high impact energies. Dow Chemical's contribution to this area is based on a unique combination of rubber morphologies including labyrinth, onion skin, and core-shell rubber particles. This new resin, referred as a controlled morphology resin (CMR), was investigated to determine the toughening mechanism of this unique rubber morphology. This poster will summarize the initial studies of these resins using the double-notch four-point bend test of Su and Yee, tensile stage electron microscopy, and Poisson Ratio analysis of the fracture mechanism.

The low-velosity impact properties and failure mechanisms of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber (Dyneema®SK-75) and a composite material (CM) based on it with the rigid and flexible matrices were investigated by the “Impact Break” (IB) method. A fundamental difference in deformation behavior and failure mechanisms upon impact on the UHMWPE-fiber and on the CM based on this fiber has been investigated experimentally. It is shown that impact has a little effect on the properties of UHMWPE-fiber, since it is an isotropic material. It has been established that upon impact, the properties of a fiber without a matrix were significantly higher than the properties of CM based on it. Impact action stimulates the interaction between CM components (fibers and matrix). Mechanism of stepwise deformation of anisotropic CM is occurred, which begins from the first moment of impact and ends with the destruction of the CM. A “stairway of deformation” behavior is observed in anisotropic materials. Stepwise deformation is the main form of deformation and the basic mechanism of failure of anisotropic composite materials upon impact.

In this study the lamina properties of glass/epoxy, carbon/epoxy and kevlar/epoxy composite along their principal coordinate axes were evaluated by performing tensile test. The laminates were prepared by hand lay-up technique and compressed using a compression molding machine at 70 oc and 80 bar pressure. The test was conducted as per ASTM standard D3039 by affixing strain gauges in the specimen to obtain the longitudinal and transverse strain. The mechanism of failure was also studied by performing fractographic analysis using scanning electron microscope which shows peeled off fiber surfaces in the case of kevlar/epoxy laminate.
