The Scandal in Academia [32] [33] [34] [35] is an extended fictional case-study intended for use as a teaching and discussion aid for educational practitioners looking to introduce elements of computer ethics into their curricula. Inspired by Epstein [17] [18] it is a full-cycle scenario involving many individuals which touches upon the complexity and interrelations of modern computer ethics. It has been trailed and evaluated as a teaching tool by the authors [36] and with multiple groups since then. However its utility as a general resource is limited without the academic context that supports deeper investigation of the material. It is to address this issue that the authors offer this commentary on the Scandal, with a focus on the ninth and tenth newspaper items presented within. Specifically these are Culture of Fear and Nepotism at University and Witch-Hunts at the University - IT Crackdown Causes Criticisms.

Over the past year a pandemic has swept across the world and, unsurprisingly, revealed gross inequalities across all aspects of life. We saw this in the constant pandemic media coverage that overlooked the experiences of the disability community and, more specifically, the autism community, at least at first. Furthermore, let us not forget in the early days of the pandemic that in countries such as Italy, people without disabilities were prioritized for life-saving machines (Andrews et al., 2020; Lund & Ayers, 2020), contributing to a culture of fear for the one in five Canadians with a disability (Morris et al., 2018) about what would happen to them here. As COVID-19 reached Canadian shores we saw this pattern of inequity quickly replicated within our society. For instance, Canadians with developmental disabilities, such as autism, living in residential settings did not receive the same level of support as those living in different kinds of residences such as retirement residences (Abel & Lai, 2020). Likewise, the initial claims that only people with ‘preexisting conditions’ were at risk implied that those at risk were somehow less valuable to society. Nothing has highlighted the very real problem and extent of ableism within Canadian society as a whole more than these injustices arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, and this is what planted the seed for the Canadian Journal of Autism Equity (CJAE).

Problema: Relações entre família e criança hospitalizada no contexto da emergência, reforçam frequentemente a cultura do medo por meio de condutas que a amedrontam demasiadamente, especialmente quando submetidas aos procedimentos dolorosos. Objetivos: analisar representações sociais da família acerca do sofrimento da criança na emergência; identificar a cultura do medo no contexto das representações da família e implicações; elaborar cartilha aos familiares como ferramenta facilitadora na minimização do estresse psicológico da criança. Método: Estudo descritivo, abordagem qualitativa, pautada na Teoria das Representações Sociais, utilizou-se técnicas de evocação livre, entrevista semiestruturada e observação participante. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de Bardin e classificados em cinco categorias: 1) profissionais de saúde; 2) objetos estranhos; 3) evento indesejável; 4) bactéria e infecção hospitalares e 5) medo da morte da criança. O estudo realizado na emergência pediátrica de um hospital universitário no município de Niterói/RJ e cujos sujeitos foram os familiares que acompanharam as crianças hospitalizadas. Conclusão: Percebe-se no cotidiano da emergência, que crianças sofrem dor emocional, antes da dor física, visto que medo excessivo da criança é culturalmente incentivado e aceito pelas famílias. Desconstruí-lo com educação e reforço positivo é eficaz ferramenta estratégica de promoção da saúde emocional ao binômio criança-família.   Problem: Relationships between hospitalized family and child in the emergency context often reinforce the culture of fear through behaviors that frighten her too much, especially when subjected to painful procedures. Objectives: to analyze social representations of the family about the suffering of the child in the emergency; Identify the culture of fear in the context of family representations and implications; To elaborate a booklet for the family as a facilitating tool in minimizing the psychological stress of the child. Method: Descriptive study, qualitative approach, based on Social Representations Theory, we used free evocation techniques, semi-structured interview and participant observation. The data were submitted to the analysis of Bardin and classified into five categories: 1) health professionals; 2) foreign objects; 3) undesirable event; 4) hospital bacterium and infection; and 5) fear of child death. The study carried out in the pediatric emergency of a university hospital in the city of Niterói / RJ and whose subjects were the relatives who accompanied the hospitalized children. Conclusion: It is noticed in the daily emergency that children suffer emotional pain, before physical pain, since excessive fear of the child is culturally encouraged and accepted by families. Deconstructing it with education and positive reinforcement is an effective strategic tool for promoting emotional health to the binomial child-family.

The article discusses the problem of the theory and practice of contemporary Serbian feminist essay. The text indicates how – at the turn of the 21st century – the essay participated in the reading of the nationalist culture of fear during the breakup of Yugoslavia, how it became the tool for creating an analytical and methodological platform and a means of quick anthropological and cultural diagnoses, as well as a form of transfer of social or philosophical notions. This new strategy of the essay was illustrated through the examples of books by Svetlana Slapšak, a leading figure of the (sub)genre in the Serbian culture, a professor of cultural anthropology, classical philologist, and feminist critic: Mala crna haljina. Eseji o antropologiji i feminizmu (1993/2007, Little Black Dress. Essays on Anthropology and Feminism), Ženske ikone XX veka (2001, Female Icons of the 20th Century), Ženske ikone antičkog sveta (2006, Female Icons of the Antiquity), Antička miturgija: žene (2013, Antique Mythurgy: Women). It becomes clear that one of the trends of the contemporary essay in the Serbian and post-Yugoslav cultures is the application of the genre in the spirit of modern engaged humanities and textual intervention.

According to at least one author, our lives are increasingly dominated by a ‘culture of fear’, in which possible adverse outcomes dominate our world views. Throughout the Western world, awareness of child sexual abuse has led to action by members of the public to draw attention to horrific crimes against children. This article reviews some of the media reports and seeks to explain why so many are concerned by those that prey on children.
