Abstract/Description:
Fernández de Oviedo, famous Spanish conquistador and author of "Historia General y Natural de los Indias", is a controversial historical figure. Since his period, he is usually portrayed negatively as an inhuman, fierce enemy of the Indians. Kohut's monograph investigates the validity of such portrayal. According to his study, his negative role cannot be denied, but there were number of issues that are usually omitted and Oviedo's negative portrayal may have been exaggerated.
