The results of comprehensive studies of multifactor processes, mechanisms and criteria for fracture at a variation of the crack-like defect state, loading conditions and mechanical properties of structural materials carried out in the 20th - 21st centuries are presented on the basis of monographic publications and articles published in the journal “Zavodskaya Laboratoriya. Diagnostika Materialov.” Crack resistance of materials and structures has become a key problem of the material science, technology, design, manufacture and service of structures. Fracture mechanics including estimation of the stress-strain and limiting states in a cracks tip formed a scientific basis of the crack resistance analysis Stress intensity factors (linear fracture mechanics) and strain intensity factors (nonlinear fracture mechanics) are accepted as the basic criteria of those states. The basic computational relations for construction of the fracture diagrammes which link the cracks growth with conditions of a static, cyclic, long-term, dynamic loading are presented. Parameters of computational relations are put into correspondence with the features of fracture processes on nano-, micro-, meso- and macrolevels. Prospects of the research and guidelines of further studing crack resistance are discussed.

A driving technical concern for the automobile industry is their assurance that developed windshield products meet Federal safety standards. Besides conducting innumerable glass breakage experiments, product developers also have the option of utilizing numerical approaches that can provide further insight into glass impact breakage, fracture, and fragmentation. The combined finite-discrete element method (FDEM) is one such tool and was used in this study to investigate 3D impact glass fracture processes. To enable this analysis, a generalized traction-separation model, which defines the constitutive relationship between the traction and separation in FDEM cohesive zone models, was introduced. The mechanical responses of a laminated glass and a glass plate under impact were then analyzed. For laminated glass, an impact fracture process was investigated and results were compared against corresponding experiments. Correspondingly, two glass plate impact fracture patterns, i.e., concentric fractures and radial fractures, were simulated. The results show that for both cases, FDEM simulated fracture processes and fracture patterns are in good agreement with the experimental observations. The work demonstrates that FDEM is an effective tool for modeling of fracture and fragmentation in glass.

This paper reports the analysis of acoustic emission signals captured during three-point bending fracture tests of concrete specimens with different mixture composition. Acoustic emission is an experimental tool well suited for monitoring fracture processes in material. The typical acoustic emission patterns were identified in the acoustic emission records for three different concrete mixtures to further describe the under-the-stress behaviour and failure development. An understanding of microstructure–performance relationships is the key to true understanding of material behaviour. The acoustic emission results are accompanied by fracture parameters determined via evaluation of load versus deflection diagrams recorded during three-point bending fracture tests.

Purpose Fracture properties depend on the type of material, method of testing and type of specimen. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate fracture properties by adopting a stable test method, i.e., wedge split test. Design/methodology/approach Coarse aggregate of three different sizes (20 mm, 16 mm and 12.5 mm), three ratios of coarse aggregate, fine aggregate (CA:FA) (50:50, 45:55, 40:60), presence of steel fibers, and specimens without and with guide notch were chosen as parameters of the study. Findings Load-crack mouth opening displacement curves indicate that for both fibrous and non-fibrous mixes, higher volume of aggregate and higher size of coarse aggregate have high fracture energy. Originality/value For all volumes of coarse aggregate, it was noticed that specimens with 12.5 mm aggregate size achieved highest peak load and abrupt drop post-peak. The decrease in coarseness of internal structure of concrete (λ) resulted in the increase of fracture energy.

This paper provides a mathematical description of hydromechanical coupling associated with propagation of localized damage. The framework incorporates an embedded discontinuity approach and addresses the assessment of both hydraulic and mechanical properties in the region intercepted by a fracture. Within this approach, an internal length scale parameter is explicitly employed in the definition of equivalent permeability as well as the tangential stiffness operators. The effect of the progressive evolution of damage on the hydro-mechanical coupling is examined and an evolution law is derived governing the variation of equivalent permeability with the continuing deformation. The framework is verified by a numerical study involving 3D simulation of an axial splitting test carried out on a saturated sample under displacement and fluid pressure-controlled conditions. The finite element analysis incorporates the Polynomial-Pressure-Projection (PPP) stabilization technique and a fully implicit time integration scheme.

Sulfur Extended Asphalt Modified (SEAM) is a newly developed asphalt modifier. The principal purpose of this paper is to study the performance of SEAM modified asphalt under the low temperature. Through the Low-temperature splitting test and the Low-temperature bending test .It indicated that the SEAM enhances the performance of asphalt under the low temperature.
