Karen L. Fingerman is an assistant professor of Human Development and Family Studies at Pennsylvania State University. Her research examines positive and negative emotions in lifelong relationships, including mother-daughter ties, grandparent-grandchild relationships, and friendships. She recently received the Springer Award for Early Career Achievement in Research on Adult Development and Aging from Division 20 of the American Psychological Association. She teaches courses in life span development, adult development, and social gerontology. Susan Krauss Whitbourne is a professor of Psychology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; Coordinator of the Office of National Scholarship Advisement in Commonwealth College; the faculty adviser to the Psi Chi Chapter; and Coordinator of the Honors Program in Psychology. She conducts research on identity in adulthood and old age and its relation to physical functioning. A former president of Division 20 of the American Psychological Association, she is currently serving as Division 20 Council Representative. She has written 10 books and nearly 100 articles and chapters on the topic of aging and adult development and is active in teaching introductory psychology as well as courses on aging.

Jon Kaas received a Ph.D. in Psychology with Irving Diamond at Duke University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Clinton Woolsey in neurophysiology at the University of Wisconsin, where he also collaborated with Ray Guillery. After 4 years as an Assistant Professor in Neurophysiology at Wisconsin, he moved to the Department of Psychology at Vanderbilt University where he is currently Centennial Professor. Awards include the Earl Sutherland Prize, Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award, Krieg Cortical Discoverer Award, and American Psychological Association Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award.

ABSTRACTFirst Person is a series of interviews with the first authors of a selection of papers published in Disease Models & Mechanisms, helping early-career researchers promote themselves alongside their papers. Katie Lloyd and Stamatia Papoutsopoulou are co-first authors on ‘Using systems medicine to identify a therapeutic agent with potential for repurposing in inflammatory bowel disease’, published in DMM. Katie conducted the research described in this article while a postdoctoral research associate in Prof. Chris Probert's lab at the University of Liverpool, Liverpool, UK. She is now a lecturer in pharmacology at the University of Chester, Chester, UK. Her research focuses on personalising medicine by combining innovative experimental approaches to identify biomarkers of inflammatory disease, drug response and mechanisms of drug resistance, which consider complex factors such as inter-patient variability and co-morbidities. Stamatia conducted the research described in this article while a postdoctoral research associate in Werner Muller's lab at the University of Manchester, Manchester, UK. She is currently a postdoctoral research associate in the lab of Mark Pritchard at the University of Liverpool, Liverpool, UK, investigating the regulation of transcriptional responses during inflammation and the impact of environmental factors on them, and has just accepted the position of assistant professor at the University of Thessaly, Greece.

A reviewer of a book I wrote claimed an idea presented therein could be found elsewhere. Nine years later, no one could say where, but no one would correct the erroneous claim, so what be-gan as an effort to obtain a redress of a legitimate grievance slowly degenerated into a tour d’farce of a surreal ethics warp in our intellectual community. The citations submitted to docu-ment the claim failed to do so, and the file on the dispute maintained by the American Psychological Association (APA) really is not about my case at all. The University of Connecticut (UConn) and the American Association for the Advancement of Sci-ence (AAAS) failed to hold anyone accountable. There was a basic conflict between the conduct of officials of all these organiza-tions and their ethical codes. In a culture of intellectual cor-ruption, behavior consisted of a pervasive and extended cover-up characterized by sophistry, secrecy, fantasy, irrelevance, ra-tionalization, misattribution, misrepresentation, fabrication, falsification, failure to communicate and an adamant refusal to deal logically and fairly with the facts of the case. This demon-strated a complete lack of cognitive integrity and constituted a total betrayal of the academic/scientific commitment to truth.

Jian-Ping Zou of Suzhou University and Wei Zhang of the University of Massachusetts, Boston, observed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 2639) that the phosphonylation of an arene 3 proceeded with substantial ortho selectivity. Yonghong Gu of the University of Science and Technology, Hefei, showed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 192) that an arylpropanoic acid 6 could be ortho hydroxylated with PIFA to give 7. Louis Fensterbank, Max Malacria, and Emmanuel Lacôte of UMPC Paris found (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2010, 49, 2178) that a benzoic acid could be ortho aminated by way of the cyano amide 8. Daniel J. Weix of the University of Rochester developed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 920) a protocol for coupling an aryl iodide 10 with an alkyl iodide 11 to give 12. Professor Wang devised (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2010, 49, 1139) a mechanistically intriguing alkyl carbonylation of an iodobenzene 10. This is presumably proceeding by way of the intermediate diazo alkane. Usually, benzonitriles are prepared by cyanation of the halo aromatic. Hideo Togo of Chiba University established (Synlett 2010, 1067) a protocol for the direct electrophilic cyanation of an electron-rich aromatic 15. Thomas E. Cole of San Diego State University observed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 3033) that an alkyl dimethyl borane, readily prepared by hydroboration of the alkene with BCl3 and Et3 SiH, reacted with benzoquinone 17 to give 18. Presumably this transformation could also be applied to substituted benzoquinones. When a highly substituted benzene derivative is needed, it is sometimes more economical to construct the aromatic ring. Joseph P. A. Harrity of the University of Sheffield and Gerhard Hilt of Philipps-Universität Marburg showed (J. Org. Chem. 2010, 75, 3893) that the Co-catalyzed Diels-Alder cyloaddition of alkynyl borinate 21 with a diene 20 proceeded with high regiocontrol, to give, after oxidation, the aryl borinate 22.

Wilbert J. McKeachie has been the president of the American Psychological Association (APA), the American Association of Higher Education, the American Psychological Foundation, the Division of Educational and School Psychology of the International Association of Applied Psychology, and APA's Divisions 2 and 15. He received his PhD at the University of Michigan in 1949 and is former Director of the University of Michigan Center for Research on Learning and Teaching. He also served as Chair of the Psychology Department at the University of Michigan from 1961 to 1971. Professor McKeachie has received eight honorary degrees, the American Psychological Foundation Gold Medal for Lifetime Contributions to Psychology, and the American Psychological Association Presidential Citation for exemplary service to the academic and scientific community. His classic book, Teaching Tips, is now in its 12th edition (McKeachie & Svinicki, 2006). Héfer Bembenutty is an Assistant Professor of Educational Psychology at Queens College of The City University of New York in the Department of Secondary and Youth Services. He received his BA in psychology from the University of Michigan, an MS in psychology from Eastern Michigan University, and an MA and PhD in educational psychology from The City University of New York. He maintains an active research agenda in students' and teachers' self-regulation of learning, the effects of test anxiety on learning, homework self-regulation, self-efficacy beliefs, multicultural education, and academic delay of gratification. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in educational psychology, cognition, instruction and technology, human development and learning, classroom management, and multicultural education.

Emil Baleczky (his pseudonyms: E. Latorchanin, O. Vyshchak, and his cryptonym: E. A.) is one of the most prominent personalities in the history of Ukrainian studies in Hungary in the twentieth century. His main scientific interests include Transcarpathian dialectology and historical lexicology of the Ukrainian language. The second stage of the scientist's professional carrier is connected with the University of Budapest, where in 1951, Emil Baleczky was appointed head of the Department of the Russian Language at the Institute of Foreign Languages, and at the same time assistant professor of the Russian Institute at the University. Among the scientific interests of Emil Baleczky was the investigation of lexical units commonly used in Transcarpathia, first of all, in terms of their etymology. Among the achievements of the researcher, special attention must be paid to Emil Baleczky's attempt to determine the origin of some borrowed words, including those originally Slavic, which are common in the Carpathian Ukrainian dialects. Emil Baleczky performed a deep etymological and lingual-geographical analysis of the word урик, урюк, орек in the Ukrainian language, that of the word дюг widespread in Precarpathian Ukrainian, Polish, and Slovakian dialects, and also that of the noun kert in Transcarpathian Ukrainian dialects. The author devoted a separate paper to the study of the origin of dialecticisms like фотляк, csulka ~ csurka, бôшн’ак, булґар’, валах, ґириґ, тôўт, and циганин, investigated the etymology of the terms of national dishes widespread in Carpathian Ukrainian dialects, in particular of the token бáник. He considered the role of the Old Church Slavonic language in the history of the Carpathian Ukrainian dialects. According to his contemporaries, it is known that Emil Baleczky did not maintain official connections with the Soviet Transcarpathians but was surprisingly well-informed about the scientific processes in his native land. He analyzed the works contained in the two editions of the Dialectological Collection of Uzhgorod State University. In addition to examining the issues raised, Baleczky complemented, specified, and sometimes criticized the achievements of his colleagues, which indicates his deep knowledge of Transcarpathian Ukrainian dialectology. Thus, we can state that Emil Baleczky's works testify the high professionalism of the author, his profound knowledge in the field of synchronic and diachronic dialectology. The love of Transcarpathian dialects inspired the researcher to study them thoroughly as well as to present the research results to the general public of Slavists. The main area of Emil Baleczky's scientific interest until the end of his life was Ukrainian linguistics, particularly Transcarpathian Ukrainian dialectology. The aim of this paper is to present the Emil Baleczky's achievements in the field of Transcarpathian Ukrainian dialectology, focusing on the period from 1957 to 1979.

Jun-yi is an assistant professor in the lab of Zhe Han at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, USA, investigating the use of Drosophila as a model to study human disease mechanisms and treatment approaches. Xiaohu is a postdoc in the same lab, investigating gene functions in cardiovascular development and genetic diseases.

AbstractChristopher Butterfield is a composer and composition teacher. His music has been performed across Canada and in Europe, with recordings on the CBC, Artifact, and Collection QB labels. He is currently the Director of the School of Music in the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Victoria. Christopher was born in 1952 in Vancouver, BC. He studied composition at the University of Victoria with Rudolf Komorous and at the State University of New York at Stony Brook with Bülent Arel. He was a performance artist, rock guitar player and composer while living in Toronto between 1977 and 1992, after which he returned to the University of Victoria as Assistant Professor of Composition.I studied composition with Christopher between 2000 and 2005. Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to sit down with him in Victoria. During our interview, I asked him about his life and work, and for his thoughts on how Czech-Canadian composer Rudolf Komorous has influenced composition in Canada over the last few decades.

Robert Gillespie is director of string education and assistant professor of music at The Ohio State University, where he is responsible for the undergraduate and graduate curriculum in string pedagogy and orchestral teaching. He received his Ph.D. from The University of Michigan. A violinist, adjudicator, researcher, and clinician, Dr. Gillespie is currently principal second violin of the PRO MUSICA Chamber Orchestra of Columbus. The founder and director of The Ohio State University-Columbus Symphony Orchestra Junior Strings Youth Orchestra, and of The Ohio String Teachers Middle School Summer Orchestra Camp, he also reviews new music for the American String Teacher. Dr. Gillespie has developed a series of diagnostic videotapes for string teachers which are now available nationally through the American String Teachers Association.
