We studied antioxidant activity of six neuroleptics (chlorpromazine, levomepromazine, promethazine, trifluoperazine and thioridazine) and two antidepressants (imipramine and amitriptyline) in the range of concentration of 10−7−10−4 м. We applied luminol-dependent chemiluminescence to test the ability of these drugs to scavenge the biologically relevant oxygen-derived species: hydroxyl radical, superoxide radical, hypochlorous acid in vitro. We found that the phenothiazines were powerful scavengers of hydroxyl and superoxide radicals. Chlorprothixene, amitriptyline and imipramine had no scavenge activity to the superoxide radical. All drugs showed a moderate scavenger effect on hypochloric anion.

Objective: In the present study, antioxidant activity in the leaf of the pet-ether, chloroform, acetone and methanolic extracts from Litsea laevigata Gamble. Leaf was investigated by employing established in vitro studies. L. laevigata belongs to the Lauraceae family. Methods: The capability of the plant extract to act as hydrogen/electrons donor or scavenger of radicals were determined by in vitro antioxidant assays using 2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radical (DPPH.) scavenging, reducing power assay, superoxide radical (O2*-) scavenging activity, phosphomolybdenum assay, FRAP, ABT and metal chelating activity were performed to know the antioxidant potency of the plant extract of leaves of L. laevigata. Results: Results are evaluated higher in leaf extract of L. laevigata recorded total phenol, total flavonoid, and tannin. The present state of work was designed to evaluate the phytochemical, antioxidant in the plant leaf extracts of L. laevigata. The plant L. laevigata methanolic extract of leaf showed greater IC50 antioxidant activity of DPPH assay (5.264 µg/ml) and compare to other extract, higher phosphomolybdenum reduction (164.36 mg/g), better Reducing power activity leaf in methanol (0.711%), higher ferric reducing power (4060.66MmolFe(II)E/mg), and higher in superoxide radical scavenging activity in (78.12 mg/ml). However, the better metal chelating ability was shown by the water extracts of the leaf (5.145 EDTAE/100g) compared to other solvent extracts. Conclusion: The result indicates the total phenol and antioxidant activity potential of L. laevigata.

Dihydromyricetin-zinc(II) complex was synthesized. The scavenging activity of DPPH radical, hydroxyl radical, superoxide anion radical and alkane radical by dihydromyricetin-zinc(II) complex were determine, moreover compared with Vc. The results showed that dihydromyricetin-zinc(II) complex possessed strong scavenging activities on DPPH•, hydroxyl radical, superoxide anion radical and alkane radical with correspounding maximum scavenging rate 74%, 70% , 65% and 50% at the concentration from 0.1 mmol/L to 0.5 mmol/L, respectively, which were higher than Vc. These results suggested that dihydromyricetin-zinc(II) complex would be an effective free radical scavenger.

Objective: The objective is to evaluate the antioxidant activity of the methanolic leaf extract of Wedelia chinensis.Methods: In vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated by studying 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, superoxide radical scavenging activity, ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) scavenging activity, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, metal chelating activity, and total antioxidant activity. Ascorbic acid, BHT, quercetin, and EDTA were used as standards for the experiments.Results: Inhibition concentration50 values observed for DPPH radical scavenging, superoxide radical scavenging, and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities were determined to be 62.5, 769.23, and 617.28 μg/ml, respectively and that of FRAP scavenging, metal chelating, and total antioxidant activities were found to be 343 μmol Fe (II)/g, 79.56 mg EDTA/g extract, and 398.17 mg ascorbic acid eq/g extract, respectively.Conclusion: The results clearly indicate that methanolic leaf extract of the study species W. chinensis is effective in scavenging free radicals and has the potential to be a powerful antioxidant.

The term antioxidant is widely used but rarely defined. One suggested definition is that an antioxidant is 'a substance that, when present at low concentrations compared with those of an oxidizable substrate, significantly delays or prevents oxidation of that substrate'. Many substances have been suggested to act as antioxidants in vivo, but few have been proved to do so. This chapter addresses the criteria necessary to evaluate a proposed antioxidant activity. Simple methods for assessing the possibility of physiologically feasible scavenging of important biological oxygen-derived species (superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical, hypochlorous acid, haem-associated ferryl species, radicals derived from activated phagocytes and peroxyl radicals, both lipid-soluble and water-soluble) are presented. Methods that may be used to gain evidence that a compound actually does function as an antioxidant in vivo are discussed.

In this study, chitin nanofibers are isolated from Calocybe indica (Milky White Mushroom), and they are further characterized using various analytical techniques such as UV-VIS, FTIR, TGA, Fe - SEM, and XRD. Antioxidant activity of the chitin nanofibers was studied by performing various assays such as DPPH, ABTS, H2O5 Scavenging Activity, Hydroxyl Radical Activity, Superoxide Assay, and Reduced Glutathione Activity. Isolated Chitin nanofibers were then chemically treated to form hydrogels. The hydrogels formed were further characterized.

Anthocyanins, which possess strong antioxidant activities, are abundant in purple sweet potato wine. In the present study, changes in the antioxidant activity of purple sweet potato wine during storage were investigated. The results showed that purple sweet potato wine had high 2,2-dipheny-l-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free-radical and superoxide-radical scavenging activities, which were stable during storage periods. Compared with these two scavenging activities, the hydroxyl-radical scavenging activity of purple sweet potato wine was concentration-dependent and only presented relatively obvious scavenging activity at high concentrations. This hydroxyl-radical scavenging activity was also stabile during storage periods. The results are valuable in purple sweet potato wine research and development.
