Clinical and densitometric researches in patients with the terminal stage of gonarthrosis and decrease in bone mineral density allow determining the condition of knee joint endoprosthesis. In the process of research women took part; their average age made up 57 years (max. 84 years old, min. 52 years old – menopausal age). X-ray densitometry (dual energy absorptiometry) before and after surgery (in 12 months). Patients were divided into two (main and control) groups depending on further treatment schedule. Studying the treatment results was carried out using the method of criteria calculation – f* (Fisher) by the method of mathematical treatment. Densitometric data analysis before and after operation showed after operation in the main group of women, who took osteotropic drugs as compared to the indicators of control group, significant bone density increase. The growth in bone mineral density of the main group by the year end made up on the average 60%, in control group – 18,75%.

Objectives: (1) To assess the bone mineral density by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry in women aged 45 and older with overweight, obesity. (2) To approach the relationship between the bone mineral density and osteoporosis risk factors in women aged 45 and older with overweight, obesity. Materials and method: 207 women aged 45 and older receiving treatment at Medic - Binh Duong hospital were divided into 2 groups: 147 women with overweight, obesity and 60 women without overweight, obesity. Research was designed as a cross-sectional descriptive study and comparative control group. Results: The femoral bone mineral density in terms of women with overweight, obesity is (0.795 ± 0.121) and the control group is (0.731± 0.116). The bone mineral density of lumbar spine in women with overweight, obesity is (0.800 ± 0.138) and the control group is (0.757 ± 0.148). Conclusions: The bone mineral of femora in women with overweight, obesity was higher than that of the control group (p<0.05). Between two groups, there were no differences in the bone mineral of lumbar spine (p>0.05). There was a statistically significant relationship between the bone mineral density and age, menopause state, and duration of menopause in women aged 45 and older with overweight, obesity (p<0.01). [Purpose] Sex hormones deficiency leads to dramatically bone loss in particular postmenopausal women. Royal jelly has anti-osteoporosis effect due to maintain bone volume in that condition. We hypothesized that royal jelly protein (RJP, a latent residue after extracting royal jelly) also prevents bone deficient in ovariectomized (OVX) female rats, the animal model of postmenopausal women. [Methods] Female Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 30, 6 weeks age old) were sham operated (Sham; sham operated group, n = 7), OVX control group (OC, n = 7), OVX with low RJP intake group (ORL, n = 8), and OVX with high RJP intake group (ORH, n = 8) during 8 weeks experimental periods. In the end point of this experiment, the bone samples (lumbar spine, tibia, and femur) were surgically removed under anesthesia. These bone samples were evaluated bone mineral density (BMD) and bone strength.[Results] BMD of lumbar spine in RJP intake groups (ORL, ORH) were higher than that in OC group (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01) in RJP intake volume dependent manner. BMD of tibial proximal metaphysis and diaphysis in RJP intake groups were also higher than these in OC group (p < 0.01 and p < 0.01 / p < 0.05 and p < 0.001). In addition, breaking force of femur in RJP intake groups were significantly increase compared with that in OC group (p < 0.001 respectively). [Conclusion] These findings indicate that RJP contribute to prevent sex hormone related bone abnormality

We examined the relationships among reproductive hormone concentrations and bone mineral density (BMD) in 43 women runners classified as eumenorrheic (n = 24), oligomenorrheic (n = 8), or amenorrheic (n = 11). Results were compared with a eumenorrheic nonrunner control group (n = 11). Serum 17 beta-estradiol, progesterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate concentrations were determined in daily blood samples for 21 days, and integrated concentrations (areas under the curve) were calculated. BMD was assessed at the lumbar spine and proximal femur by dual-photon absorptiometry. As expected, 17 beta-estradiol, progesterone, and lumbar spine BMD were higher in the control and eumenorrheic runner groups than in the oligomenorrheic and amenorrheic runner groups (P less than 0.05). Progesterone concentration was significantly correlated with lumbar spine BMD in the eumenorrheic runners (r = 0.61). None of the steroid hormones was significantly related to BMD in the oligomenorrheic/amenorrheic group. The present data suggest that circulating levels of gonadal steroid hormones affect axial BMD in eumenorrheic runners.

Background and objective: Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is one of the causal diseases that induce secondary osteoporosis. Although patients with pHPT have reduced bone mineral density (BMD) especially at the cortical bone, there have been controversies about risk of fracture. Moreover, no reports have been available about the threshold of BMD for fractures in pHPT patients. Methods: BMD values were measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry at lumbar spine, femoral neck and distal one third of radius. Various indices were compared in 116 female pHPT patients and 716 control subjects. Moreover, we analyzed relationship between the cut-off values of BMD and the prevalence of vertebral fractures in pHPT and control subjects. Results: The prevalence of subjects with vertebral fractures was lower in pHPT patients, compared with that of control subjects. Age and body height were significantly higher and lower in pHPT women with vertebral fractures, respectively. Lumbar spine BMD was significantly lower in pHPT women with vertebral fractures, presumably due to their increased age. There were no differences in femoral neck and radius BMD or in bone metabolic indices between pHPT women with and without vertebral fractures. On the other hand, age-matched BMD was not significantly different between both groups at any measured site. Cut-off values of BMD at lumbar spine and femoral neck were lower in postmenopausal pHPT patients, compared with those of the postmenopausal control group. Moreover, cut-off values of BMD at radius was much lower in postmenopausal pHPT patients, compared with those of the postmenopausal control group (pHPT vs control (g/cm2): 0.670 vs 0.706 at lumbar spine; 0.549 vs 0.570 at femoral; 0.394 vs 0.474 at radius). Sensitivity and specificity of vertebral fractures was lower in pHPT patients, compared with those in control group. Conclusions: The present cross-sectional study demonstrated that thresholds of BMD for vertebral fractures were lower especially at radial bone in female patients with pHPT, compared with those in the control group.

Abstract Background: There are limited clinical studies aimed at solving the problem of the efficiency of conventional treatment with oral phosphate and calcitriol in adults with hypophosphatemic osteomalacia (HO). In addition, there still had no good non-hazardous markers to evaluate the severity of bone loss of osteomalacia before and after treatment. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of conventional treatment with a self-blended phosphate supplementation and calcitriol on patients with HO and whether bone mineral density (BMD) can helpful for monitoring the efficacy. Methods: 21 HO patients and 105 healthy controls were enrolled. HO patients with calcium and calcitriol were divided into three phosphate treatment groups: Patients in group A (n=3) received continuous phosphate supplementation, patients in group B (n=5) received intermittent phosphate supplementation and patients in group C (n=3) received no phosphate supplementation. 11 of 21 HO patients were recalled for detection of BMD of the lumbar spine (L1–L4), femoral neck, and total left hip three years after the treatment. Results: The average initial serum phosphorus level of the patient group was approximately 50% lower than that of the control group. Lower BMD was significantly observed in the HO group than the control group at the lumbar spine and total hip. Continuous treatment with the phosphate supplement could increase BMD in the lumbar spine and total hip by 33.4–52.3% and the femoral neck increased by 43.2–79.3% compared with baseline, and the effect appears to be continued once treatment is discontinued. Conclusions: These findings suggest that conventional therapy can improve bone mineral defects in patients with HO, especially in the femoral neck. Detection of BMD in HO patients is a good tool to assess the extent of bone defects and the therapeutic effect.

We aimed to evaluate the change in bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with prostate cancer (PCa) receiving androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) compared to those with PCa or other urologic conditions not receiving ADT. Literature searches were conducted throughout October 2018. The eligibility of each study was assessed according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines using the Participant, Intervention, Comparator, Outcome, and Study design method. The outcomes analyzed were the mean difference (MD) of percent changes in BMD of lumbar spine, femur neck, and total hip. Five prospective cohort studies with a total of 533 patients were included in the present study. Statistically significant decreases of BMD change relative to the control group were observed in the ADT treatment group in the lumbar spine (MD −3.60, 95% CI −6.72 to −0.47, P = 0.02), femoral neck (MD −3.11, 95% CI −4.73 to −1.48, P = 0.0002), and total hip (MD −1.59, 95% CI −2.99 to −0.19, P = 0.03). There is a significant relationship between ADT and BMD reduction in patients with PCa. Regular BMD testing and the optimal treatment for BMD loss should, therefore, be considered in patients with PCa undergoing ADT.

Introduction. Current research studies demonstrate the changes of bone mineral density (BMD) in subjects with Parkinson’s disease (PD); however, data about bone quality and body composition (BC) indexes are insufficient. The aim of the study was to assess the parameters of BMD, ВС, and trabecular bone score (TBS) in PD males. Materials and Methods. We performed a cross-sectional case-control research design and examined 76 males aged 50–77 years old, who were divided into two groups: first group including men without PD n=38 and the second group including subjects with PD n=38. Disease duration was at least 5 years; all PD participants were at levodopa therapy. BMD of lumbar spine, femoral neck, total femur, radius, and total body and TBS Ll−L4 were measured using the DXA method. Whole-body DXA measures were also used for the study of total, lean, and fat masses, skeletal muscle index (SMI), appendicular lean mass index (ALMI), and fat mass index (FMI). Results. Our study showed an increased incidence of osteoporosis and significantly lower total body BMD (respectively, 1.20 ± 0.13 and 1.26 ± 0.10 g/cm2, p=0.05), but not lumbar spine and femoral neck BMDs, and higher TBS value in PD men comparing to the control group (respectively, 1.33 ± 0.12 and 1.22 ± 0.18 un., p=0.005). Also, we established significantly decreased lower extremities BMD indexes, but not upper extremities, spine, and trunk BMDs in PD males. The femoral neck, proximal femur, and lower extremities BMD indexes in PD men were reliably lower at the side of predominance of clinical symptoms. Parameters of appendicular lean mass and ALMI in PD males were reliably higher, but fat mass values and FMI were lower compared to the control group in the absence of significant differences in lean mass values and SMI in weight-matched control. Conclusion. Due to low BMD values, changes in BC are present in PD males, and appropriate screening and preventive strategies should be instigated to maintain bone health in PD subjects.
