A quantitation of IgG was made, using R.I.D test, in blood sera of 15 newborn iambs. The quantity of IgG was measured in time intervals immediately after birth and before suckling till 168th hour after birth. Two lambs out of 15 have detectable amount of IgG in their sera before suckling. The maximum concentration of IgG in 11 lambs sera was measured 24 hours, in 3 lambs sera 36 hours, and in 1 lamb's serum 48 hours after birth, respectively. In three lambs out of 15, a percentage of 20%, the serum concentration of IgG was less than 30 mg/ml. One of these lambs died and another got ill 120 hours after birth.

Abstract. Luteinized ovaries of rats hypophysectomized shortly after ovulation 25–80 days previously secrete considerable amounts of 20α-dihydroprogesterone (20α-hydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one, 20α-OHP) into the blood-stream. The serum concentration of 20α-OHP in these hypophysectomized animals is almost similar to that of progesterone in intact pseudopregnant rats on day 7 of pseudopregnancy, in spite of the absence of demonstrable amounts of prolactin. Isolated corpora lutea of the last generation and the remainder of the ovarian tissue both contained 20α-OHP. Six months after hypophysectomy no detectable amount of 20α-OHP was found in the serum. Androgenized rats, devoid of corpora lutea, did not produce 20α-OHP after hypophysectomy. These data show that pituitary hormones are not required for the prolonged synthesis and secretion of 20α-OHP by the luteinized ovary.

Abstract This study was performed to confirm the antibiotic regimen during a severe invasive surgery, such as esophagectomy, with a long procedure and a large amount of normal volumes of infusion. Ten patients with esophageal cancer were enrolled in this study, and cefmetazole sodium concentrations in serum were measured during esophagectomy. The ranges of minimum inhibitory concentrations for 90% of isolates of cefmetazole sodium for microorganisms in our institutions for 8 years were investigated. The maximum concentration was 83.9 μg/mL just after the completion of infusion, and its half-life was 1.5 hours. Serum concentration of cefmetazole sodium was kept above 16 μg/mL for 4 hours during esophagectomy. It was kept above 32 μg/mL for 2.5 hours after injection. There are almost no differences in the pharmacokinetics of cefmetazole sodium between common use and during esophagectomy. In addition, additive infusion of antibiotics 4 hours after the first infusion was recommended during esophagectomy.

The serum concentration and muscle residue of florfenicol following oral administration were evaluated in topmouth culter (<I>Culter alburnus</I>) under field conditions. Fishes were cultured in tanks and fed a commercial medicated diet containing 2000 mg/kg florfenicol in a single dose. The sampling was conducted at different intervals (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 8, 10, 12, 16, 24, 36, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, 168 h) after the cessation of medication. Drug analysis was carried out by HPLC. The maximum concentration (<I>C</I><sub>max</sub>) of 10.8 &mu;g/g in serum and 4.2 &mu;g/g in muscle were reached at the same time (<I>t</I><sub>max</sub>) of 8 hours. If the EU MRL value of 1.0 &mu;g/g is quoted for the topmouth culter tissue, the extrapolation of the data indicated that it will be passed after a 40.6 h withdrawal period for florfenicol in topmouth culter muscle.

1. In the pupal stage of the cecropia silkworm, antigen 7, a protein with the solubility characteristics of an albumin, is present in female blood in approximately a thousand times higher concentration than in the blood of males. Antigen 7 is undetectable in the blood of larvae of either sex. It first appears in the blood after the larva has spun its cocoon, and is present throughout all subsequent stages of metamorphosis. Late in the pupal-adult transformation, when the eggs are produced, the concentration of antigen 7 in female blood decreases significantly. 2. An antigen which could not be distinguished from antigen 7 immunologically is present in solution in the yolk of unfertilized eggs. 3. In females which, by ovariectomy, were prevented from forming eggs, the concentration of antigen 7 in the blood increased during the usual period of egg formation rather than undergoing the normal decrease. Ovaries transferred to the hemocoel of males produced eggs but were unable to incorporate antigen 7 in the yolk unless a detectable amount of the protein was present in the blood. The ovaries of polyphemus females which had been transfused with cecropia blood incorporated cecropia antigen 7 into the eggs they produced. These lines of evidence indicate that antigen 7 is secreted into the blood by some tissue other than the ovaries, and that it is subsequently drawn from the blood and deposited in the yolk. 4. The concentration of antigen 7 in the clear, liquid fraction of the yolk is four times higher than the maximum concentration attained in the blood during metamorphosis, and twenty times higher than that of the blood at the conclusion of egg formation. The protein thus appears to be transferred from blood to yolk against a concentration gradient.

AbstractFe XIV 530.3 nm coronal emission line observations have been used for the estimation of the green solar corona rotation. A homogeneous data set, created from measurements of the world-wide coronagraphic network, has been examined with a help of correlation analysis to reveal the averaged synodic rotation period as a function of latitude and time over the epoch from 1947 to 1991.The values of the synodic rotation period obtained for this epoch for the whole range of latitudes and a latitude band ±30° are 27.52±0.12 days and 26.95±0.21 days, resp. A differential rotation of green solar corona, with local period maxima around ±60° and minimum of the rotation period at the equator, was confirmed. No clear cyclic variation of the rotation has been found for examinated epoch but some monotonic trends for some time intervals are presented.A detailed investigation of the original data and their correlation functions has shown that an existence of sufficiently reliable tracers is not evident for the whole set of examinated data. This should be taken into account in future more precise estimations of the green corona rotation period.

Our previous results indicate that two types of fibronectin-cytoskeletal associations may be formed at the fibroblast surface: dorsal matrixbinding fibronexuses generated in high serum (5% FBS) cultures, and ventral substrate-adhering units formed in low serum (0.3% FBS) cultures. The substrate-adhering fibronexus consists of at least vinculin (VN) and actin in its cytoplasmic leg, and fibronectin (FN) as one of its major extracellular components. This substrate-adhesion complex is localized in focal contacts, the sites of closest substratum approach visualized with interference reflection microscopy, which appear to be the major points of cell-tosubstrate adhesion. In fibroblasts, the latter substrate-binding complex is characteristic of cultures that are arrested at the G1 phase of the cell cycle due to the low serum concentration in their medium. These arrested fibroblasts are very well spread, flattened, and immobile.

Observation of subtle or early signs of change in spaceflight induced alterations on living systems require precise methods of sampling. In-flight analysis would be preferable but constraints of time, equipment, personnel and cost dictate the necessity for prolonged storage before retrieval. Because of this, various tissues have been stored in fixatives and combinations of fixatives and observed at various time intervals. High pressure and the effect of buffer alone have also been tried.Of the various tissues embedded, muscle, cartilage and liver, liver has been the most extensively studied because it contains large numbers of organelles common to all tissues (Fig. 1).

The vital role played by the lymphatic capillaries in the transfer of tissue fluids and particulate materials from the connective tissue area can be demonstrated by the rapid removal of injected vital dyes into the tissue areas. In order to ascertain the mechanisms involved in the transfer of substances from the connective tissue area at the ultrastructural level, we have injected colloidal particles of varying sizes which range from 80 A up to 900-mμ. These colloidal particles (colloidal ferritin 80-100A, thorium dioxide 100-200 A, biological carbon 200-300 and latex spheres 900-mμ) are injected directly into the interstitial spaces of the connective tissue with glass micro-needles mounted in a modified Chambers micromanipulator. The progress of the particles from the interstitial space into the lymphatic capillary lumen is followed by observing tissues from animals (skin of the guinea pig ear) that were injected at various time intervals ranging from 5 minutes up to 6 months.

The addition of so-called “reactive” elements such as yttrium to alloys is known to enhance the protective nature of Cr2O3 or Al2O3 scales. However, the mechanism by which this enhancement is achieved remains unclear. An A.E.M. study has been performed of scales grown at 1000°C for 25 hr. in pure O2 on Co-45%Cr implanted at 70 keV with 2x1016 atoms/cm2 of yttrium. In the unoxidized alloys it was calculated that the maximum concentration of Y was 13.9 wt% at a depth of about 17 nm. SIMS results showed that in the scale the yttrium remained near the outer surface.
