Abstract From 2009 to 2012, a joint research team of Japanese and Vietnamese archaeologists led by the late Prof. Nishimura Masanari conducted surveys and excavations at fifteen sites around the Hoa Chau Citadel in Thua Thien Hue Province, built by the Champa people in the ninth century and used by the Viet people until the fifteenth century. This article introduces some findings from recent archaeological excavations undertaken at three Champa citadels: the Hoa Chau Citadel, the Tra Kieu Citadel in Quang Nam Province, and the Cha Ban Citadel in Binh Dinh Province. Combined with historical material and field surveys, the paper describes the scope and structure of the ancient citadels of Champa, and it explores the position, role, and function of these citadels in the context of their own nagaras (small kingdoms) and of mandala Champa as a whole. Through comparative analysis, an attempt is made to identify features characteristic of ancient Champa citadels in general.

Adjustable gastric bands: review of comparative studies Tomas Abalikšta, Gintautas Brimas, Kęstutis Strupas Vilnius University Medical Faculty, M. K. Čiurlionio Str. 21, LT-03101 Vilnius, LithuaniaVilnius University Hospital Santariškių Klinikos Centre of Abdominal Surgery,Santariškių Str. 2, LT-08661 Vilnius, LithuaniaEl. paštas: [email protected] Objective: The objective of this review is to compare different adjustable gastric bands according to the data of comparative studies. Materials and Methods: A search of articles published in any language before January 2010 was carried out through the MEDLINE, Current Contents and Cochrane Library electronic databases. All articles about comparative studies of different adjustable gastric bands were eligible for review. All possible data were extracted from accepted studies and reviewed. Results: Ten comparative studies of different adjustable gastric bands were accepted. Only one comparative study of the bands was accomplished properly. It was a prospective randomised study type with a large number of patients and a long follow-up period with all possible results evaluated. No statistically significant difference between SAGB and LAP-BAND gastric bands was found in this study. The other band studies had shortcomings: four studies were non-randomised (two of them retrospective), a small number of patients in three studies, and a too short follow-up period in all studies. The difference in weight loss was stated in one of these studies: 41.7% of initial excess weight loss in the LAP-BAND group and 28.3% in the Heliogast group. Band leakage frequency was different in one study: LAP-BAND – 7%, SAGB – 1%. A difference between pouch dilatation or band slippage frequency was found in three studies (MiniMizer Extra – 0% and LAP-BAND – 10.8%; SAGB – 2.4% and LAP-BAND – 27.6%; SAGB – 2% and LAP-BAND – 23%). There was no difference between the resolution of comorbidities, improvement of the quality of life, hospital stay, band adjustment frequency, band migration or band infection rate. Conclusion: Only one accepted study was accomplished properly. There was no difference between compared adjustable gastric bands in this study. Prospective randomised long-term (more than 5 years) comparative studies are needed for a proper evaluation of band construction or shape influence on weight loss and complications. Keywords: obesity, bariatric surgery, adjustable gastric banding.

The article considers and analyzes the existing in the world, but new for Ukraine, type of healthcare institutions - a university hospital, which today is an example of one of the largest and best university hospitals in Germany - the Medical Center of the University of Aachen. The planning and functional structure of the university hospital and special design approaches that contributed to its design and development are analyzed. The purpose of the article is to illustrate an innovative approach for our state to the organization of medical institutions and to emphasize the importance of their implementation in the domestic healthcare system. The research methodology is based on the systematization and analysis of data from various information sources, as well as on the method of sociological survey (analysis of reviews). The article considers the features of the structure of the University Hospital Aachen, namely the multidisciplinary treatment, research and student training, which are combined in one institution. According to hospital patients, the only drawback of this structure is the frequent long wait for visitors. This is probably due to the significant daily flow of patients of varying complexity and, consequently, the shortcomings of the managerial approach. However, at the same time, the hospital has many advantages, which were highlighted in the article.

This study examined 11,333 rigid endoscopy procedures performed in the Department of Otolaryngology, National Taiwan University Hospital, during a 27-year period from 1970 to 1996. Among these cases, 3217 were performed to remove foreign bodies from the airway (459 cases, 14.3%) and esophagus (2758 cases, 85.7%). Retrospective analysis of these data revealed that peanuts (217 cases) and animal bones (1184 cases) were the most frequent foreign bodies encountered in the airway and esophagus, respectively. The successful rate of removal of these foreign bodies was 99.9% (3213/3217). The complication rate was only 0.2% (8/3217), and the mortality rate was less than 0.1% (2/3217). On the basis of these results, we conclude that foreign bodies in the airway and esophagus can be removed safely under direct visualization through rigid endoscopy with relatively few complications. A significant finding in this study is the declining trend in the number of cases in recent years. Despite the decline in the number of procedures, endoscopic removal of foreign bodies remains as a vital skill of the aerodigestive tract surgeon.

The article presents an analysis of finds and information attributed to the pre-Christian religion in Ostrów Lednicki and the ancillary facilities. To this end, a number of finds from the first half of the 10th to the early 12th centuries were described and interpreted. They include a piece of a gold amulet locket, a utensil made of clay with the swastika and an encircled cross, a buried horse, wooden horse figures, an ornamental element of a knife sheath ferrule, a round rattle and a wooden structure with cornerstone offerings. By means of comparative studies and analyses of the archaeological excavations in Ostrów Lednicki and its vicinity (Dziekanowice, Moraczewo), the authors conclude that in this area, a pagan cult centre could have existed in the late 9th and the early 10th centuries at the latest, related most probably to Svarog /Svarozic, god of the Sun, the home, and a divine blacksmith.

Abstract The primary goal of an advanced degree program is to educate and train the next generation of professionals. The education process must include historical exposure to past challenges and resolutions to enhance the development of creative thinking and problem solving skills. If this is not done, the resolution of recurring and new challenges will be minimal. Blind acceptance of “gold standards,” or the development of research techniques that are not economically based, minimize the progress is gained in each new generation. The presentation will address methods of preparing students for industry research challenges.

AbstractThe Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV, Switzerland) is a university hospital with more than 11,000 employees who perform clinical, research and teaching roles. It was ranked in March 2019 among the ten best hospitals in the world according to the magazine Newsweek. The education scheme of the CHUV includes the practical training of more than 1700 young people, in particular from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Western Switzerland (HES-SO). This research and development, carried out in collaboration with the University of Teacher Education of State of Vaud (UTE Vaud), has enabled the creation and implementation of a cyclical method for evaluating the satisfaction of HES-SO healthcare students at CHUV. The method created and tested—the Cycle of Construction and Quality Control for Satisfaction Evaluations (CCQCSE)—comprises nine stages: Issues, Analysis, Design, Items, Information, Collection, Processing, Feedback and Adjustment. It was designed with the help of a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals (CHUV) and experts in education sciences (UTE Vaud) as part of a master’s thesis (Kaeser 2018) directed by our research team. A 4-month pilot phase allowed more than 250 placement students’ satisfaction levels to be collected with respect to ten aspects of the practical training scheme, and provided diagnostic feedback. Identifying strengths and areas for improvement has significantly helped with the development of a quality policy for student training at the institution. CCQCSE is now considered as a robust method in line with the quality measures already in place at CHUV. In particular, it encouraged those responsible for the practical training to reflect on their mentoring practices. Beyond the context of CHUV and the mentoring of healthcare students on placements, the CCQCSE model could be transferred to other sectors in which training placements are offered, opening up new avenues of collaborative research.
