A bench-scale UCT (University of Cape Town)-type membrane bioreactor (UCT–MBR) fed with low-strength synthetic wastewater was operated to investigate phosphorus removal with reference to poly-phosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) and denitrifying poly-phosphate accumulating organisms (DPAOs). A series of kinetic assays of PAOs and DPAOs were also conducted to analyze the metabolic activities of PAOs and DPAOs. Results showed that 93% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 77% of total nitrogen could be removed at 0.08 kgCOD kg−1 MLSS d−1 and 0.015 kgN kg−1 MLSS d−1 loading (MLSS: mixed liquor suspended solids). Removal efficiencies of total phosphorus increased during the experimental phase, with an ultimate removal efficiency of 96.1%. Kano and Kaer increased from 1.95 and 6.29 mgPO43−-P g−1 MLSS h−1 to 5.47 and 11.13 mgPO43−-P g−1 MLSS h−1 for DPAOs and PAOs respectively, with the increased ratio of DPAOs to PAOs from 31 to 49% implying DPAO metabolic activity increased faster than that of PAOs during the DPAO accumulation phase. Pano-uptake increased by 6.6 mg L−1 and the ratio of PTano-uptake to PTupt increased from 58.97 to 91.62%. The ratio of DPAOs to PAOs tended to stabilize at around 50% over time.

Several studies have described the effectiveness of vegetated buffer strips, interposed between the cultivated areas and water bodies, in removal of suspended solids and other pollutants such as Glyphosate conveyed through surface runoff. This monitoring study has quantified the effects of a 5-metre wide herbaceous buffer zone, adjacent to a vineyard, built according to the Standard 5.2 of Cross-compliance (M.D. 27417). The amount of runoff generated was 3.9% of the total annual rainfall, with negligible differences in terms of volume after flowing through the buffer zone. The effectiveness of the buffer zone in suspended solids removal was, in terms of mass balance, of 45.5%. The glyphosate outputs from the vineyard, unlike in other experiences, were negligible and therefore it was not possible to evaluate the efficiency of the buffer zone in removing it. This is due to the low rainfall occurred in the period following distribution that has favoured in situ degradation of Glyphosate.

The paper presents the results of analyzes of the granulometric composition of suspended solids in backwash water from biological activated carbon (BAC) filters and its changes during sedimentation. Backwash water samples were taken during backwashing of two pilot filters after different filtration time. It was found that regardless of the concentration of suspended solids in the collected backwash water, particle sizes vs. their percentage volume contributions for all samples were similar. Particle sizes were in the range of 2–100 μm. However, the two-hour sedimentation for most of the samples proved to be effective (total suspended solids removal up to 93%), which is caused by self-coagulation of the sample.

At the outlet of the Vermicelli catchment—a peri-urban area located in the campus of University of Calabria (Cosenza, Southern Italy)—a sedimentation tank is located, aiming at collecting the basin surface runoff and improve its quality. First, experimental results of the treatment effects are here presented and analyzed. In addition, a monitoring campaign was conducted in order to characterize the particles transported by surface runoff and to determine the treatment efficiency of the tank. The analysis showed the presence of a pollutant load in the surface runoff of the Vermicelli basin and provided information on its particle-size distribution (PSD). Results were considered in terms of the treatment efficiency of the sedimentation tank, showing a good overall removal efficiency value, together with a high variability of the removal sedimentation efficiency. This variability is mainly due to the different grain size of the suspended solids and the characteristics of the rainfall event.

Growing of mankind, society, science and technology in our world is reaching to higher level of human civilization. Therefore, a sustainable treatment procedures are required in order to prevent the consequences of growing civilized situation to the environment. Magnetism has been used as physical treatment for particles or contaminants removal from wastewater. In this experiment, comparison between locations of steel wool has been carried out in order to determine the highest suspended solid removal. Variables has been set such as magnetic strength was 1.4Tesla, flow rate was 1mL/s, 80 gram of steel wool and experiment took 24 hours of circulation time and data recorded for 24 hours. Data were recorded involving control, non-inverted magnet and inverted magnet structure. Non-inverted magnets consists of magnets on same poles while inverted magnet on different poles. As a result, steel wool located inside of pipe was exhibited the highest removal (88.2%) compared to outside of the pipe (83.3%) and both occurred in inverted magnet structure. Therefore, it was indicated that longer exposure time to magnet resulted in greater improvement in removing pollutant. The results obtained and suggests that steel wool located inside of tube with inverted magnet position can be successfully treat wastewater effectively.

Abstract Background Determination of emerging pollutants including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, industrial chemicals and hormones in different environmental samples is very important for human health. Objective Experimental design enabled parameters to be evaluated for their effects onextraction output as well as their interactive effects. Method A multivariate experimental design was used to attain optimum conditions of a dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction method for preconcentration of pesticides and pharmaceuticals for determination by GC-MS. Results The optimum parameters suggested by the design model were 200 µL of chloroform, 1.96 mL of ethanol, and 40 s vortexing period. LOD and LOQ were calculated using linear calibration plots of the analytes developed in the standard concentration range of 2.0 μg/L–2.0 mg/L. Conclusions Enhancement in detection power of the analytes recorded by the optimized method with respect to direct GC-MS determination (based on LOD values) was in the range of 3.6 and 539 folds. Spiked recovery experiments for municipal, medical, and synthetic wastewater samples yielded low recovery results when calculated against aqueous standard solutions. Matrix matched calibration standards were used to mitigate interferences from the waste samples and the percent recoveries obtained were close to 100%. This established accuracy and applicability of the developed method. Highlights The detection limits were found between 0.50 ng/mL and 37 ng/mL. An accurate, simple and sensitive analytical method was developed for the analytes.
