INTRODUCTION: This article deals with measurement of dielectric properties (relative permittivity and conductivity) of phantoms, specifically a tumor phantom and a breast phantom. We focused on the waveguide and resonance methods for the measurement of dielectric properties. The article describes the principle of these methods, and also the production process of a breast phantom and a tumor phantom. These phantoms can be used for measurements in the microwave frequency range, 8–12 GHz.OBJECTIVE: The study’s objective was to design a tumor phantom and a breast phantom, and to measure their dielectric properties. These properties must simulate human tissue.METHODS: To measure dielectric properties of human tissue, phantoms were designed using the waveguide Hippel`s method and the resonance method with a cavity resonator.RESULTS: The aim of this work was to create the phantoms that would have properties comparable to those of real tissues. Results of measurement are shown as frequency dependence of relative permittivity and conductivity for breast, breast phantom, tumor, and tumor phantom.

The knowledge of frequency and temperature dependent dielectric properties of tissue is essential to develop ultra-wideband diagnostic technologies, such as a non-invasive temperature monitoring system during hyperthermia treatment. To this end, we characterized the dielectric properties of animal liver, muscle, fat and blood in the microwave frequency range from 0.5 GHz to 7 GHz and in the temperature range between 30 °C and 50 °C. The measured data were modeled to a two-pole Cole-Cole model and a second-order polynomial was introduced to fit the Cole-Cole parameters as a function of temperature. The parametric model provides access to the dielectric properties of tissue at any frequency and temperature in the specified range.

The paper presents the results of theoretical and experimental researches of a frequency-tunable device based on the multilayer strip-slot transition with the U-shaped slot resonator of the variable length. The application of the presented device makes it possible to implement a resonant method for measuring the dielectric properties of materials in the microwave frequency range. The numerical simulation in the rigorous formulation of the electrodynamics problem is performed for the theoretical research. The aim of the theoretical research is to determine the electrical characteristics of the multilayer strip-slot transition with the U-shaped slot resonator of the variable length. The results of numerical simulation prove the possibility of applying the multilayer stripslot transition with the U-shaped slot resonator of the variable length to implement the resonant method for measuring the dielectric properties of materials in the microwave frequency range. The experimental research is performed on the sample of the multilayer strip-slot transition with the U-shaped slot resonator of the variable length in the frequency range (850–1250) MHz. Measurements of S-parameters of the multilayer strip-slot transition with the U-shaped slot resonator of the variable length are accomplished using the vector network analyzer. The material under research is BaFe10Ti2O19. The results of theoretical and experimental researches are in good qualitative and quantitative agreement.

In this work, 3-trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate (MPS) was used as a substrate for coating on natural rubber (NR) particles by admicellar polymerization. The incorporation of MPS monomer, consisting of silicon element and 3 reactive methoxy groups (R-Si(OCH3)), is expected to increase dielectric properties of NR. Under the admicellar polymerization, the R-Si(OCH3) groups can be hydrolyzed and condensed into polysiloxane existed on NR particles. This method aims to prepare composite materials from NR and MPS with various amounts of MPS. The effects of microwave frequency and chemical modification by admicellar polymerization were studied. The dielectric properties of admicelled natural rubber (adNR) with PMPS were investigated at 20 °C in a frequency range extended from MHz to GHz. The results showed that the dielectric constant of adNR increased with PMPS contents. To study the effect of crosslinking on the dielectric properties of adNR, the dielectric spectroscopy measurements were performed on prevulcanized and non-prevulcanized adNR. The investigation showed that the dielectric constant of non-prevulcanized adNR was less than prevulcanized adNR.

The dielectric properties of -SiAlON and various cations doped -SiAlON bulk ceramics prepared by a hot-press method were investigated. The dielectric properties (dielectric constant and tangent loss) were characterized by a post-resonator method (Hakki-Coleman method) at room temperature in the microwave frequency range. The effect of z-values about -SiAlON was examined, and also the effects of various interstitial cations on dielectric properties of -SiAlON were studied. Dielectric properties of -SiAlON were compared with those of Si3N4 and -SiAlON and their relationship between the dielectric properties and the cationic species of SiAlON were discussed.
