Purpose This paper aims to develop conceptual arguments questioning the efficacy of administration by the transaction cost economics (TCE) approach in an organization undergoing a major change. Design/methodology/approach The focus is on three distinct dimensions of organizational life where, as per prior research, TCE is likely to be inadequate: interdependence across transactions, high reliance on managerial foresight and inseparability of administrative decisions made at different points in time. Findings The climate of coercion and surveillance engendered by administration based on TCE approaches – that punishes deviation from goals, even when they are framed on inadequate knowledge – forestalls creative problem-solving that is necessary to address unforeseen developments that arise during change implementation. Fiat accomplishes within-group compliance in the change project sub-teams, but between-group interdependencies tend to be neglected, hampering organizational effectiveness. Moreover, attempts to create independent spheres of accountability for concurrent fiats regarding pre-existing and new commitments breed inefficiency and wastage. Research limitations/implications The malevolent aspects of TCE-based administration contribute to organizational dysfunctions like escalation of commitment and developing of silos in organizations. Practical implications To succeed in effecting a major organizational change, meaningful relaxation of demands for delivering on prior goals is required, along with forbearance of errors made during trial-and-error learning. Originality/value TCE-based administration is deleterious to an organization attempting a major change. Supremacy accorded to resolution of conflicts in distinct hierarchical relationships by the mechanism of fiat fails to address the needs of an organizational reality where multiple groups are engaged in a set of interdependent activities and where multiple, interdependent organizational imperatives need to be concurrently served.

This research proposes a socio-rhetorical analysis of videos posted on YouTube under the tag “Sports”, specifically the regular content created by users, so-called YouTubers. The theoretical basis contemplates the concept of technology – based on the works by Viera Pinto (2005) – and participatory cultured – mainly guided by ideas from Shirky (2008, 2011). The analytical device is derived from work by Swales (1990, 1998, 2004), Askehave & Swales (2001), and Miller (1998, 2012). A hybrid methodology was created, resulting from the sociological and linguistic concepts applied to the organizational reality of virtual massive communication. The analysis decomposes the video in rhetorical movements. We follow the hypothesis that the main purpose of such communicational practices is self-promotion of the individual who produce the YouTube channel, or the promotion of the brand of which constitutes the channel produced by multiple users. Furthermore, the self-promotion and widening of audience is pursued with financial purpose.

To make the deeply rooted layers of catalyzing technology and optimized modelling gain their true value for education, healthcare or other public services, it is necessary to prepare well the Big Data environment in which the Big Data will be developed, and integrate elements of it into the project approach. It is by integrating and managing these non-technical aspects of project reality that analytics will be accepted. This will enable data power to infuse the organizational processes and offer ultimately real added value. This chapter will shed light on complementary actions required on different levels. It will be analyzed how this layered effort starts by a good understanding of the different elements that contribute to the definition of an organization's Big Data ecosystem. It will be explained how this interacts with the management of expectations, needs, goals and change. Lastly, a closer look will be given at the importance of portfolio based big picture thinking.

At no point in the preceding ten chapters has the presentation of Hezbollah proceeded in an encyclopedic spirit -- they deal only with those aspects of Hezbollah's historical, sociological, and organizational reality that explain the strength of its mobilization. The focal point of the book thus far has been issuance, and only the elements that served to foster the formation of a specific perception of the party by its supporters have been addressed. The present chapter now turns to reception: how the public close to Hezbollah dwelled on, reworked, and integrated these elements into reasons for retaining its political leanings over the years.

This chapter approaches paramount aspects related to test automation, introducing the importance of implementation in the software market and essential bases, such as adjustment to the organizational reality and establishment of an efficient strategy. Types of tools and directives for a successful implantation are presented. Test automation has been considered the main measure taken to enhance test efficiency — fundamental in the software-development process. Responsible for verifying and/or validating the quality of the executable product compared to performed documentation and client requirements. Therefore, with the chapter content here provided, we aim to provide the reader with an understanding of test automation and grant relevant orientations to assist implementing it.

This research examines the implementation process of an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system and shows that implementation cannot be viewed solely in instrumental terms–that is, organizations do not simply select systems based on information requirements so that proper “fit” can be achieved. Instead, this research suggests that the activities of selecting and implementing a new ERP become the medium for (re-)constructing or (re-)constituting the organization’s values. Theorists have described such activities as a “mythmaking” process. A case study of an implementation at a large nonprofit organization is presented to demonstrate how myth-making served to construct an ERP system as an “integrated” system and at the same time served to elaborate existing organizational values. The myth functioned as a vehicle of consensual organizational reality, serving to align the acquisition of an ERP system with the organizational values, thereby garnering widespread support for a complex, expensive and relatively unknown technology.

PurposeIn recent years, organization scholars have engaged in several conversations about the process of theory development, and offered many proposals for building new theories of organization. The purpose of this paper is to highlight a fundamental, fruitful and often neglected method for developing new theories of organization.Design/methodology/approachThis paper draws on Peirce's typology of reasoning: deduction, induction and abduction. This typology helps in analyzing and categorizing the extant proposals for developing new theories of organization, and also makes it visible what approach has been most often missing.FindingsThis paper shows that the offered proposals can be categorized into the following two models: (1) armchair theorizing; (2) present capturing. This categorization also highlights a third model – change sensitizing – that is based on shifting organization theories by sensitizing ourselves to macro shifts of organizational reality.Originality/valueAlthough the change sensitizing model is an unusual, marginal practice in today's organization research, it has historically been used to develop many of the renowned theories in social sciences. If taken as a serious agenda, it has the potential to generate a host of new, valuable theories of organization.
