Hydrodynamic bearings are generally used for a long term, so the bearing surfaces may be roughened for many reasons such as wear, impulsive damage, foreign particles, cavitation erosion, rust, and so on. Under the turbulent operating conditions of high speed bearings, the surface roughness may result in considerable increase in both film pressure and temperature. This paper describes an adiabatic approximate solution for the static and dynamic characteristics of 180 deg partial journal bearings with homogeneous surface roughness. Applying the modified lubrication equation and energy equation, considering the combined effects of turbulence and surface roughness, to the finite width 180 deg partial journal bearings, the static and dynamic characteristics such as pressure and temperature distributions, Sommerfeld number, attitude angle, spring and damping coefficients and whirl onset velocity are obtained numerically. In the numerical analysis of the temperature distribution, adiabatic boundary conditions are assumed and then the heat transfer effect to the journal and bearing-bush surfaces is omitted. The numerical results are indicated in graphic form for various relative roughness under the mean Reynolds number of Re = 5000 and 10,000. Moreover, some numerical results of static characteristics are compared with the experimental results.

Abstract The paper presents, surface roughness effect for thermo-hydrodynamic analysis of journal bearings extended to couple stress lubricants with high polymer additives. A modified energy equation is simultaneously solved with heat transfer equation as well as modified Reynolds equation by using Multigrid method. The effects of couple stress and surface roughness on the performances of a finite journal bearing are presented in detail. Further, it is shown that lubricants with couple stress and surface roughness, not only increases the load capacity and decreases the friction coefficient, but also generates a lower bearing temperature field. Thus, the lubricant with couple stress improves the performance of journal bearings. The characteristics of bearing are compared with numerical results.

On the basis of the Christensen stochastic theory, the effects of isotropic surface roughness upon the bifurcation behaviour of a short journal-bearing system are investigated. By applying the Hopf bifurcation theorem to the non-linear equations of motion of rough journal bearings, the steady-state performance, the linear characteristics, and the weakly non-linear bifurcationphenomenaarepresented. For the short bearing with length-to-diameter ratio l = 0. 5, the onset of oil-whirl rough bearing system can manifest a bifurcation behaviour exhibiting subcritical limit cycles or super-critical limit cycles for running speeds near the bifurcation point. For a particular system parameter, the effects of isotropic surface roughness are found to enlarge the size of sub-critical limit cycles and super-critical limit cycles when the Hopf bifurcation occurs. On the whole, the roughness effects of isotropic surface patterns upon the Hopf bifurcation phenomena of the short-bearing system are more pronounced for a smaller system parameter ( p = 0. 4 in the sub-critical region and Sp = 0. 05 in the super-critical region) and a higher roughness parameter (Λ = 0. 4).

This paper focuses on the operating behavior of journal bearings for industrial machinery application during run-ups. For this purpose, a numerical simulation code that is based on a two-dimensional extended and generalized Reynolds equation and a full three-dimensional energy equation, was advanced by a theoretical model considering the effects of mixed friction and warming of journal components during start-up. The mixed friction routine contained the elastic half-spaces model proposed by Boussinesq, which considers the influence of rough surfaces by implementing flow factors and calculates additional stiffness and dissipation in areas with solid interactions. Furthermore, a transient term was added in the energy equation to consider the thermal inertia of journal, and bearing to ensure a realistic heating during run-ups. Results of the prediction were compared to experimental data taken from a special test rig built up for validation procedures. Besides the conventional sensors for temperature, oil flow, and relative motion between shaft and stator, a contact voltage measurement was installed to determine the intensity of mixed friction. The evaluation of experimental data by Stribeck curves, based on a shaft torsion measurement, indicated a significant influence of run-up time on frictional moment. The friction coefficient of the rotor bearing system was strongly influenced by the run-up time. A short run-up time reduced the frictional coefficient in the mixed lubrication regime while the opposite behavior was observed in the hydrodynamic lubrication regime. The numerical code predicted these tendencies in good agreement with experimental data, however, only if the transient energy model was applied.
