During summer 2010, the University of Wyoming American Studies Program offered “Field Studies in Historic Preservation: Elk Ranch Determination of Eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places.” This 3-credit, upper-level undergraduate course introduced students to the process of documenting, evaluating and understanding historic buildings and cultural landscapes through field work. The course included readings, lectures, discussions, directed field work, archival research and writing. Students were given the opportunity to assist in fulfilling a contract with the National Park Service and to learn about how the park manages its historic and cultural resources. The course was taught by Research Scientist Mary Humstone, with assistance from University of Wyoming American Studies Folklife Specialist Andrea Graham and NPS Cultural Resource Specialist Katherine Longfield.

During summer 2011, the University of Wyoming American Studies Program offered “Field Studies in Historic Preservation: Preparing a Preservation Treatment Guide for the Historic AMK Ranch.” This 3-credit, upper-level undergraduate course introduced students to the process of documenting and assessing the condition of historic buildings and developing treatment protocols. The majority of the course was devoted to inspecting buildings, interviewing property managers, researching solutions to common problems and writing a “Preservation Treatment Guide” for use by National Park Service and University of Wyoming personnel. Students also studied log building maintenance and repair at other historic sites within Grand Teton National Park and conducted experiments and demonstrations at the AMK Ranch. Through this field course, students were given the opportunity to assist in fulfilling a contract with the National Park Service and to learn about how the park manages its historic and cultural resources. The course was taught by University of Wyoming Research Scientist Mary Humstone, with assistance from building conservation specialist Harrison Goodall of Langley, Washington, and Grand Teton National Park Cultural Resource Specialist Katherine Longfield

During the summer 2011 field season, the University of Wyoming American Studies Program conducted a field school at the AMK Ranch to develop a Preservation Treatment Guide for the property’s historic buildings. Students and faculty documented and assessed the condition of each building on the property, researched and analyzed a range of historic preservation treatments, tested log cleaning techniques, and compiled the results of their field work, research and analysis into a 150-page document designed to guide National Park Service and University of Wyoming property managers in making decisions regarding historic buildings.

In the latter half of the 1980s, Muriel (Miki) Crespi, Chief Ethnographer for the National Park Service, gave voice to the concept in the National Park Service of "ethnographic resources" and a systematic effort to survey and inventory national parks for their presence. Within the National Park Service at the time, "cultural resources" were archeology sites, buildings, structures, museum objects, and landscapes that were mostly historic (or prehistoric) in nature. These types of cultural resources were considered tangible objects or "properties" that had some element of historical value and could be identified, counted, and subsequently "managed." In most cases, the identification and evaluation of these cultural resources was based on whether they fit into the criteria of significance developed for the National Register of Historic Places.

During summer 2009, the University of Wyoming American Studies Program conducted an intensive historic building and landscape survey of the Jenny Lake Lodge in Grand Teton National Park (Figure 1). The oldest of Grand Teton Lodge Company’s visitor accommodations, Jenny Lake Lodge has a long and varied history that spans the period from early 20th century dude ranching to contemporary automobile tourism, and that is closely entwined with the history of Grand Teton National Park itself.

Aim. To determine physiologically expedient rates of mineral nitrogen in winter rye production on sod-podzol- ic soils based on the orientation of the processes of biological nitrogen transformation in the plants rhizosphere. Methods. Field studies, gas chromatography determination of potential nitrogen fi xation activity and potential emissions of N 2 O. Results. The results obtained have demonstrated that the rates of mineral nitrogen, not ex- ceeding 60 kg/ha, can be considered physiologically expedient for winter rye production on sod-podzolic soils. Under the application of microbial preparation Diazobakteryn, there is a higher physiological need of plants for nitrogen, which allows increasing the rates of nitrogen fertilizers up to 90 kg/ha. Conclusions. The orienta- tion of the processes of biological nitrogen transformation in the root zone of plants is a reliable indicator of determining the appropriateness of nitrogen fertilization of crops.

The paper is devoted to ethno-cultural landscapes of the Republic of Tuva. Ethnocultural landscapes (ECLs) are specific socio-environmental systems that developed as a result of the interaction of ethnic groups with their natural and social environments and are in a constant process of transformation. An attempt is made to identify the mechanisms of the formation, functioning and dynamics of ethnocultural landscapes in the specific conditions of the intracontinental cross-border mountain region, as well as to establish the main factors-catalysts of their modern changes. For the first time an attempt is made to delimit and map the ethnocultural landscapes of Tuva. For this, literary sources, statistical data and thematic maps of different times are analyzed using geoinformation methods. The results of 2014-2018 field studies are also used, during which interviews with representatives of different ethno-territorial, gender, age and social groups were taken. It is revealed that the key factors of Tuva’s ethnocultural landscape genesis are the natural isolation of its territory; the features of its landscape structure; the role of government; population migrations from other regions and the cultural diffusion provoked by them. 13 ethnocultural landscapes are identified at the regional level. Their modern transformation is determined by the shift of climatic cycles, aridisation, globalisation of sociocultural processes, changes in economic specialisation and ethnopsychological stereotypes.

The Salix genus includes shrub species that are widely used in phytoremediation and various other phytotechnologies due to their advantageous characteristics, such as a high evapotranspiration (ET) rate, in particular when cultivated in short rotation intensive culture (SRIC). Observations made in past field studies suggest that ET and its impact on soil hydrology can also lead to increases in soil pollutant concentrations near shrubs. To investigate this, sections of a mature willow plantation (seven years old) were cut to eliminate transpiration (Cut treatment). Soil concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), aliphatic compounds C10–C50, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and five trace elements (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn) were compared between the Cut and the uncut plots (Salix miyabeana ‘SX61’). Over 24 months, the results clearly show that removal of the willow shrubs limited the contaminants’ increase in the soil surface, as observed for C10–C50 and of 10 PAHs under the Salix treatment. This finding strongly reinforces a hypothesis that SRIC of willows may facilitate the migration of contaminants towards their roots, thus increasing their concentration in the surrounding soil. Such a “pumping effect” in a high-density willow crop is a prominent characteristic specific to field studies that can lead to counterintuitive results. Although apparent increases of contaminant concentrations contradict the purification benefits usually pursued in phytoremediation, the possibility of active phytoextraction and rhizodegradation is not excluded. Moreover, increases of pollutant concentrations under shrubs following migration suggest that decreases would consequently occur at the source points. Some reflections on interpreting field work results are provided.

Proposed construction and development projects that require Federal permits are subject to review under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, which requires that the Federal decision-maker take into account the project's potential effects on cultural resources listed or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Over the years and especially after 1990 when the National Park Service released Bulletin 38, Guidelines for Evaluating and Documenting Traditional Cultural Properties (TCPs), Section 106 review has increased the consideration of designating TCPs and consultation with the Indian tribal organizations that value them. Bulletin 38 defines TCPs as places that have been historically important in maintaining the cultural identify of a community.
