Abstract Distinct materials are used for the construction of battle tanks used in defense sectors. The hull and turret of the battle tanks are made up of rolled homogeneous armor steel (also known as armor steel). The inner portions like the driver cabin and control room are covered with medium carbon steel. Hence, the dissimilar joint between these materials is unavoidable in the battle tank construction. Conventional fusion welding processes like manual metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, and gas tungsten arc welding are preferred to join the dissimilar metals. However, the high heat input nature of these processes will create hydrogen induced cracking, high residual tensile strain, and HAZ softening, etc. To minimize these issues, solid state welding processes were adopted. In the present study, mechanical properties and microstructural characteristics of rotary friction welded dissimilar joint of armor steel and medium carbon steel was analyzed. The ultimate tensile strength of the dissimilar joint is around 775 MPa and the failure occurred at the medium carbon steel side. The impact toughness value of dissimilar joints is higher than medium carbon steel and lower than armor steel. The microstructure across the dissimilar joint has distinct features and a complex pattern was observed at the weld interface.

Weld quality is greatly affected by the operating process parameters in the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process. The quality of the welded material can be evaluated by many characteristics, such as bead geometric parameters, deposition efficiency, weld strength, weld distortion, et cetera. These characteristics are controlled by a number of welding process parameters, and it is important to set up proper process parameters to attain good quality. Various optimization methods can be applied to define the desired process output parameters through developing mathematical models to specify the relationship between the input parameters and output parameters. The method capable of accurate prediction of welding process output parameters would be valuable for rapid development of welding procedures and for developing control algorithms in automated welding applications. This chapter presents the details of various techniques used for modeling and optimization of GMAW process parameters. The optimization methods covered in this chapter are appropriate for modeling and optimizing the GMAW process. It is found that there is high level of interest in the adaptation of RSM and ANN techniques to predict responses and to optimize the GMAW process. Combining two optimization techniques, such as GA and RSM, would reveal good results for finding out the optimal welding conditions. Furthermore, efforts are required to apply advanced optimization techniques to find out the optimal parameters for GMAW process at which the process could be considered safe and more economical.

The aimed of this research is to determine the feasibility and effect of the mixture of the shielding gas in the physical and mechanical properties. Low carbon steel LR grade A in a thickness 12 mm were joined in butt joint types using GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) with groove’s gap 5 mm and groove angle’s 400 with variation of shielding gas composition. The composition of shielding gas that used were 100% Ar, 100 % CO2 and 50% Ar + 50 % CO2. The measured of mechanical properties with regard to strength, hardness and toughness using, tensile test, bending test, Vickers hardness Test, and Charpy impact test respectively. The physical properties examined with optical microscope. Results show that tensile strength of welding metals are higher than raw materials. Welds metal with mixing Ar + CO shielding gas has the highest tensile strength. Hardness of weld metals with the shielding gas 100% Ar, 100 % CO2 and 50% Ar + 50 % CO2 are 244.9; 209.4; and 209.4 VHN respectively. The temperature of Charpy test was varied to find the transition temperature of the materials. The temperature that used were –60°C, -40°C, -20°C, 0°C, 20°C , and room temperature. Weld metals with various shielding gas have similar trends of toughness flux that was corellated with the microstructure of weld .
