An important product in biomedical and biomimetic engineering is the 3D scaffold, which mimics the real tissue in vitro to achieve the external cultivation of cells. The difference between the 3D scaffold and other biomimetic products lies in the fact that the former mimics the internal features of tissue, while the latter generally approximates the external traits of biological beings. In the field of scaffold engineering, the 3D printed vibratory scaffold, 3DPVS, has been proposed as a present-to-future novel scaffold product, and it currently stays at the stage of conceptual development. To achieve the novel design of the conceptual 3DPVS, a conceptual design process has been established by authors in their previous work, which contain three main stages, namely the design initiation, concept generation, and concept evaluation. In terms of design initiation, it is a ‘must-accomplish’ stage which generates outputs for both the subsequent concept generation and evaluation. Work of design initiation therefore is of significant value and it consists of several tasks; that is, conducting a thorough literature review, summarizing the fundamental issues preparing the general conceptual design, studying the multi-characterization of the 3DPVS, putting forward the potential base model(s), as well as indicating the ideality of the scaffold and establishing potential ideal model(s) for the 3DPVS. In this paper, design initiation will be chiefly focused upon these essential aspects to be discussed, work of which is expected to be useful in establishing a solid ground for future innovation work of the 3DPVS.

The last decade has witnessed a significant reduction in prices and an increased performance of electronic components, coupled with the influence of the shift towards the generation of open resources, both in terms of knowledge (open access), programs (open-source software), and components (open hardware). This situation has produced different effects in today’s society, among which is the empowerment of citizens, called makers, who are themselves able to generate citizen science or build assembly developments. Situated in the context described above, the current study follows a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) approach. In this way, it attempts to define a conceptual design of an Internet of Things (IoT) node, which is reproducible at both physical and behavioral levels, to build IoT nodes which can cover any scenario. To test this conceptual design, this study proposes a sensorization node to monitor meteorological phenomena. The node is called SEnviro (node) and features different improvements such as: the possibility of remote updates using Over-the-Air (OTA) updates; autonomy, using 3G connectivity, a solar panel, and applied energy strategies to prolong its life; and replicability, because it is made up of open hardware and other elements such as 3D-printed pieces. The node is validated in the field of smart agriculture, with the aim of monitoring different meteorological phenomena, which will be used as input to disease detection models to detect possible diseases within vineyards.

The alignment of lower limb prosthesis is one of the most significant procedures for prosthetic adaptation since it allows greater comfort and fulfillment of the prosthesis function. Prosthetic misalignment can lead to severe consequences for the patient, such as gait instability and increased load on the residual limb. The fitting and alignment of the prosthetic system is a highly subjective procedure that relies mainly on the professional experience of the prosthetist. This study aims to design a prototype of a low-cost alignment device for lower transfemoral prosthesis to be used temporarily during the prosthesis static alignment. The conceptual design methodology was implemented. The device was modeled in Solidworks, and the mechanical resistance of the device was determined in a finite element analysis in Ansys. Among the tested materials, CarbonFil exhibited the best behavior showing promising results for a 3D printed alignment device prototype. The viability of this device’s massive production should be considered to further reduce its cost and be implemented in a larger number of prosthetic centers worldwide.

One of the ways to achieve safety and comfort is to improve on-board air conditioning systems.The use of air cooling machine determines the air pressure high level at the point of selection from the aircraft engine compressor. Because of the aircraft operation in different modes and especially in the modes of small gas engines, deliberately high stages of selection have to be used for ensuring proper operation of the refrigeration machine in the modes of the aircraft small gas engines. Into force of this, most modes of aircraft operation have to throttle the pressure of the selected stage of selection, which, together with the low efficiency of the air cycle cooling system, makes the currently used air conditioning systems energy inefficient.A key feature of the architecture without air extraction from the main engines compressors is the use of electric drive compressors as a source of compressed air.A comparative analysis of competing variants of on-board air conditioning system without air extraction from engines for longrange aircraft projects was performed at the Moscow Aviation Institute (National Research University).The article deals with the main approaches to the decision-making process on the appearance of a promising aircraft on-board air conditioning system at the stage of its conceptual design and formulated the basic requirements for the structure of a complex criterion at different life cycle stages.The level of technical and technological risk, together with a larger installation weight, will require significant costs for development, testing, debugging and subsequent implementation, but at the same time on-board air conditioning system scheme without air extraction from the engines will achieve a significant increase in fuel efficiency at the level of the entire aircraft.
