Abstract The landscape of diversity on higher education campuses has expanded as students with intellectual disability (ID) gain access to higher education through a variety of programs throughout the United States. The benefits and drawbacks of including students with ID in the college classroom and culture are becoming apparent, but more remains to be discovered as we look deeply in to the lived experience of postsecondary inclusion. The aim of this study was to investigate university faculty member perceptions about and experiences with the inclusion of students with ID in college classrooms. To accomplish this, the investigators examined the perceptions of faculty members at a regional 4-year university who had experience in postsecondary inclusion. We used an online survey to mine the benefits and challenges to faculty members and students enrolled in their courses, both with and without ID. Faculty perceptions are shared as well as implications for societal change.

Due to changes in legislation and policy in the United States, higher education has become more available to people with intellectual disability (ID). Currently, over 6000 students with ID are enrolled in 310 colleges and universities. In the past decade, the federal government has invested over 100 million dollars in a model demonstration program aimed at institutions of higher education to create, expand, or enhance high-quality, inclusive higher education experiences to support positive outcomes for individuals with ID. This article will describe the impetus and impact of this funding as well as related changes in policy and practice. With the emergence of these opportunities, a field of research has emerged, offering new knowledge about what higher education can offer to students with ID as well as the positive impact these students have on their peers, professors, and campus communities. We have also begun to see documentation of more long-term impacts of higher education on students’ employment, independent living outcomes, and life satisfaction. By describing these policy, practice, and research developments, this article will provide readers with a better understanding of the background, current status, and future needs of the field of inclusive higher education for people with ID in the United States and potential takeaways for similar stakeholders in other countries.

This chapter presents the results of a study on faculty perceptions and practices regarding the use of videos and other technological tools in higher education. The research was developed within the scope of the EU project RELOBIE: Reusable Learning Objects in Education (2014-1-FI01-KA200-000831). Through a cross-national, in-depth survey of faculty members in four partner countries, the study has gathered some useful insights into instructors' perceptions, motivations, and experiences regarding the use of digital videos and other technologies for personal, professional, and instructional purposes. The study has also shed some light into both facilitating and inhibiting factors to the adoption and effective use of videos and other technologies in the higher education classroom.

Many universities in the United States are working to incorporate innovative 21st century skills, new active learning pedagogical approaches, and technology. Creating new physical and virtual spaces requires agile faculty professional for technology-centric experiences. Designing and offering meaningful professional development to faculty members in new virtual and physical learning technology-centric environments is a challenge. This case study explores the journey of one higher education institution in the Midwest as they implemented new technology-centric strategies, initiatives, and support. Data from faculty participants indicate the program's success and establish an agenda for future research.

Abstract Students with intellectual disability (ID) are increasingly attending postsecondary education institutions and acquiring work experiences while completing their studies. One of the main motivations for students with ID to seek higher education is to broaden and increase their chance for finding fulfilling, paid employment in their communities. Findings from a qualitative study on staff perspectives regarding career development and employment supports and services provided to students attending Transition and Postsecondary Education Programs for Students With Intellectual Disability (TPSID) model demonstration programs in the United States are presented. Results reflect consensus across program staff regarding the goals and expectations for employment of TPSID students. Programs vary considerably in their institutional context, their partnership with other entities, and the structure of employment services, as well as the emphasis placed on paid versus unpaid employment. Some of the key strategies shared by staff regarding successful student employment practices involved outreach and engagement, visibility on campus, improving access to career services, and cultivating partnerships. As higher education continues to expand its offerings to students with ID, postsecondary education programs need to continue to emphasize and honor the importance of paid employment, and continue to seek the best methods to achieve this outcome for students with ID.

The authors have completed a pilot study of the state of diverse faculty in higher education in the United States. Inquiries included the areas of belonging (if and how they developed a sense of belonging), professional respect (how colleagues regarded their achievements), and the role of cultural broker (how they functioned as cultural brokers in positions of influence and with diverse students). Initial results suggest that some diverse faculty members believe that racism is alive and well in higher education today. Others emphasize the challenge of adapting and belonging in higher education while retaining their unique cultural voices and having those voices be heard and utilized in movement toward cultural pluralism in the institutional environment of higher education.

The purpose of the work is to evaluate the potential of a high school teacher; the subject of study is employment potential and competitiveness of the university faculty member; research methods include analysis of statistical data and online-survey. The article presents the results of the research potential of the university teaching staff in the conditions of ongoing reforms in higher education and in connection with changing requirements to higher education institutions forfaculty members. It was determined that faculty members demonstrate high loyalty and commitment, but average engagement. It was revealed that the institution creates proper conditions for development and self-realization, creativity and communication. It was confirmed that university professors have a high scientific and innovative potential and willingness to conduct research. The conclusion is that the employment potential of university staff is not used to the full. It was determined that the majority of the teaching staff appreciates personal competitiveness. And only one out of five is aware of the need to develop their personal competitiveness in line with the new requirements. The results of the study may be useful for university governance within the management of human resources quality.

AbstractAuthorship of peer-reviewed journal articles and abstracts has become the primary currency and reward unit in academia. Such a reward is crucial for students and postdocs who are often under-compensated and thus highly value authorship as an incentive. While numerous scientific and publishing organizations have written guidelines for determining author qualifications and author order, there remains much ambiguity when it comes to how these criteria are weighed by research faculty. Here, we sought to provide some initial insight on how faculty view the relative importance of 11 criteria for scientific authorship. We distributed an online survey to 564 biomedical engineering, biology, and bioengineering faculty members at 10 research institutions across the United States. The response rate was approximately 18%, resulting in a final sample of 102 respondents. Results revealed a consensus on some criteria, such as time spent conducting experiments, but there was a lack of agreement regarding the role of funding procurement. This study provides quantitative assessments of how faculty members in the biosciences evaluate authorship criteria. We discuss the implications of these findings for researchers, especially new graduate students, to help navigate the discrepancy between official policies for authorship and the contributions that faculty truly value.

Em Portugal, ao mesmo tempo que se implementavam as orientações decorrentes dos compromissos da Declaração de Bolonha, foi criada legislação que enquadrava um novo regime de acesso de pessoas adultas ao ensino superior, o que provocou um acréscimo muito significativo de entradas, nas Universidades e Institutos Politécnicos, para maiores de vinte e três anos. Neste trabalho, apresentamos um estudo com estes estudantes, que frequentam a Universidade de Coimbra, realizado através de questionário com perguntas fechadas e abertas, seguido de focus group, onde se pode compreender a importância que a oportunidade de acesso e a experiência vivida, enquanto estudantes, têm para estas pessoas, mesmo que, em termos gerais, seja muito pouco considerada a sua especificidade de estudantes com caraterísticas e responsabilidades, profissionais e familiares, bastante diferentes.   PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Declaração de Bolonha; Acesso de adultos ao ensino superior; Saberes experienciais.     ABSTRACT In Portugal, while implementing the guidelines stemming from the commitments of the Bologna Declaration, legislation was created that framed a new regime for adult access to higher education, which has led to a very significant increase in enrollments in Universities and Institutes Polytechnics, for people with more than twenty-three years.
