Pegagan (Centella asiatica Linn Urb.) merupakan jenis tanaman yang biasa digunakan dalam industry farmasi dan kosmetik.Penelitian ini ditujukan untuk mengevaluasi pengaruh tiga lokasi asal sampel dan tiga jenis larutan pengekstraksi (methanol, etanol 96% (v/v), dan etanol 70% (v/v)) terhadap aktivitas antioksidan herbal pegagan (Centella asiaticaLinn Urb).Sampel pegagan yang digunakan pada peneltian ini berasal dari Lembang, Bandung, dan Solo.  Pada ekstrak yang diperoleh dilakukan penentuan kadar fenol total, flavonoid total, dan triterpenoid total. Aktivitas antioksidan dari ekstrak dievaluasi berdasarkan metoda peredaman radikal bebas 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH).  Hasil yang diperoleh menunjukkan bahwa simplisia pegagan asal Lembang yang diekstrak dengan etanol 70% mempunyai aktivitas antioksidan tertinggi serta kandungan fenol total dan flavonoid total tertinggi. Sedangkan simplisia pegagan asal Bandung yang diekstrak dengan pelarut metanol memiliki kandungan triterpenoid total tertinggi tetapi memiliki kandungan fenol total dan flavonoid total serta aktivitas antioksidan yang terendah.  Hasil analisa statistik menunjukkan bahwa lokasi asal simplisia pegagan dan polaritas pelarut yang digunakan untuk ekstraksi secara signifikan (p<0,05) mempengaruhi kandungan fenol total, flavonoid total dan triterpenoid total serta aktivitas antioksidan dari ekstrak pegagan.Kata kunci: ekstrak pegagan, antioksidan, polaritas pelarut Pegagan (Centella asiatica Linn Urb.) is a plant species that commonly used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry. Objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of different source location and solvent polarity for the extraction to the content of total phenolic, total flavonoid total triterpenoids as well as antioxidanti activity of pegagan ((Centella asiatica (Linn.) Urb.)extracts.  Pegagan materials for this study are from three different locations: Bandung, Lembang and Solo.  Based on polarity differences methanol, ethanol 96% and ethanol 70% were used as solvent for extraction.  Antioxidant activity of the extract was evaluated based on the method of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity.  Results showed that the highest total phenolic content and flavonoid content and antioxidant activity were from 70% ethanol extract from Lembang. Materials from Bandung extracted with methanol gave the highest content of total triterpenoid, however has the lowest content of total phenolic, total flavonoid and antioxidant activity.  Statistic  analysis showed that there is significant differences (p<0,05) of results of total phenolic, total flavonoid, total triterpenoid and antioxidant activity due to source location and solvent polarity. The effects of different types of solvents and extraction method were investigated to determine the presence of antioxidant contents and activity from the P. niruri plant. The aim of this study is to determine which extraction method will give higher natural antioxidant contents and antioxidant activity. The content of natural antioxidant and antioxidant activity were analysed by total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity assay. The results showed that extracts from a supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) method without the addition of modifier showed the highest content of total phenolic (187.66 mg GAE/ g) and flavonoid (1100.93 mg QE/g) in P. niruri compared to the other methods of extraction with different type of solvents. The extract of P. niruri from different extraction methods showed antioxidant activity on DPPH radical scavenging assay. The soxhlet extraction method by methanol showed the lowest IC50 compared to the other methods of extraction. The results revealed that P. niruri extracts had different content of antioxidant and antioxidant activity. The solvent polarity and different methods of extraction play significant roles in determining the most suitable method for production of antioxidant contents and antioxidant activity from P. niruri extracts.

Melastoma malabathricum Linn. commonly known as ‘senduduk’ in Malaysia, belongs to Melastomataceae family. The study was carried out to screen the phytochemicals present in methanol extract of leaf, flower, fruit, and stem and to evaluate the antioxidant activity, total flavonoid and total phenolic contents of these different parts. Phytochemical screening showed that all parts of this plant contained tannins, steroids, phenols and flavonoids. The flower extract was found to have highest total phenolic whereas the leaf demonstrated the highest flavonoid content followed by flower. The results of antioxidant activity from the DPPH assay showed that the flower has the highest radical scavenging activity comparable to quercetin standard while stem showed the lowest activity. The higher content of total phenolics, flavonoids and antioxidant capacity of flower suggests the possibility of its incorporation and exclusion of stem in M. malabathricum preparations for development of newer effective drugs.

This study was designed to examine the in vitro antioxidant DPPH free radical-scavenging activity, and the total phenolic and flavonoid content of ethanol and methanol extracts of Salvia amplexicaulis Lam. in the whole plant and different parts, leaves, stems and flowers. The largest amounts of extract yield were obtained from the flowers, 14.14% and 12.00 % (w/w) in the ethanol of methanol extracts, respectively. The ethanol extract of leaves (16.07 ?g/ml) and methanol extract of the whole plant (21.28 ?g/ml) showed the highest activity against the DPPH radical. The ethanol extract of the leaves was the richest in phenols (222.40 mg GAE/g) and flavonoids (49.81 mg QE/g), whereas the methanol extract of the whole plant contained the highest amount of phenolics (180.89 mg GAE/g) and flavonoids (38.15 mg QE/g). A very strong linear correlation between antioxidant activity and the phenolic content of the extracts was established. The obtained results suggest that S. amplexicaulis could be regarded as an important source of natural antioxidants.

Through different extraction techniques, the potential of Centella asiatica as a natural source of antioxidant was investigated. The C. asiatica aqueous extracts were obtained via infusion, decoction and ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) techniques. The effects of different extraction techniques were studied on the extraction yield, total phenolic contents and antioxidant activity. The total phenolic contents of the extracts and antioxidant activity were examined using the Folin-Ciocalteu’s reagent and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity assay, respectively. Results indicated that the UAE exhibited the highest extraction yield, highest total phenolic contents, as well as highest antioxidant activity. The yield of the extracts increased in the order of infusion < decoction < UAE which were 18.2 %, 23.6% and 25.4 %, respectively. All extraction techniques had a significant effect (p <0.05) on the total phenolic contents and antioxidant activity of C. asiatica extracts. The total phenolic contents was ranged from 3.42 ± 0.030 to 8.32 ± 0.105 mg GAE/g dry extract while the antioxidant activity was in the range of 75 to 86 %. This study confirms that C. asiatica has the potential to be a good resource for the future development of natural antioxidant. In addition, extraction via UAE can be an ideal technique to obtain phytochemical-rich extracts from medicinal plants.

Objective: The present study qualitative phytoconstituents examine the total phenol, total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant efficiencies traditionally used plant, Meyna spinosa. Methods: Chemical profiling, estimation of total phenolic content (TPC), TFC, and antioxidant activity of ethanol extracts of M. spinosa have performed by applying standard protocols. Antioxidant activity of leaf and stem was evaluated by 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay. TPC and TFC of the plant were assessed using Folin–Ciocalteu colorimetric and aluminum colorimetric assay, respectively. Results: The findings of the study exhibit that ethanol extract of M. spinosa is proved to be the presence of phytoconstituents (7/9) such as alkaloids, terpenoids, saponins, tannins, phytosterols, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds, while carbohydrate, fixed oils, and fats are unavailable. In addition, phenolic compositions of ethanol extract of leaf and stem; 93.21±2.93 and 54.33±0.69 mg gallic acid equivalents/g extract, respectively; TFCs of leaf and stem have recorded as 61.55±1.21 and 37.55±1.28 mg quercetin equivalents/g extract, respectively. Antioxidant efficiency of both leaf and stem is tested using DPPH radical scavenging assay as IC50 20.68±0.32 and 50.99±0.56 μg/ml, respectively. Conclusion: From the above results, it has concluded that the ethanol extract of the M. spinosa leaves and stems seizes rich phytoconstituents which can be applied in food technology, drug industries, ethnopharmacological fields, etc., for the development of healthiness and to battle against negative health consequences.

Dracocephalum moldavica L. has been used as both treatment of coronary heart disorders and food supplements. In the present study, determination of total phenolic and flavonoid content in methanol, ethanol and methanol/ethanol extracts of leaf was studied in Iranian Moldavian balm for the first time. Antioxidant activity of the studied plant was also measured. The methanol extract had the highest phenolic and flavonoid content, anthocyanin, DPPH and H2O2 radical scavenging activity. The ethanol extract showed the least amount of all. The methanol/ethanol extract showed the highest amount in two oxides including nitric and superoxide radical scavenging activities; it also showed the highest Ferric Reducing Ability Power. The obtained chromatograms of the plant using High Performance Liquid Chromatography showed that the highest and the lowest found phenolic compounds were caffeic acid and vanilic acid, respectively. The results show that this plant is a suitable natural antioxidant to reduce the oxidative stress in human being.

Abstract Background: Rhus vulgaris is rich in various classes of polyphenols and flavonoids that act as free radical scavengers and reduce oxidative stress and cure various harmful human diseases. The plant is a traditionally known medicinal plant which is used against a number of diseases including cancer. Methods: The current investigation points towards the investigating quantitative phenolic contents, flavonoid contents and the free radical scavenging activity & antioxidant activity of Rhus vulgaris extract in n-hexane, acetone, and 80% of aqueous methanol. The phenolic contents were estimated by Folin–Ciocalteu procedure and gallic acid as a reference molecule whereas the total flavonoid contents were determined by using aluminum chloride and catechin. In addition, the dilution serial method was used to evaluate the leaves extract of rhus vulgaris, and the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) method was utilized to assess the above-mentioned extracts against oxidative stress. Results: The result revealed that the ranges of total phenolic content from 5.82 ± 4.6 to 83.15 ± 7.6 mg GAE/g of the dry weight of extract, expressed as gallic acid equivalents. The total flavonoid concentrations were varied from 2.21 ± 7.34to 23.47 ± 4.87 mg CE/g, expressed as catechin equivalents. Antioxidant activity of extracts was expressed as the concentration of DPPH radical’s inhibition ranges from 1.2 ± 0.32 to 22.86 ± 3.71 mg AAE/ g. Conclusion: The 80% aqueous methanolic extract of Rhus vulgaris showed the highest phenolic and flavonoid contents and strong antioxidant potential and it could be used as antibiotics for different curable and incurable diseases.

A systematic study was conducted about the solvent effect on the purslane total phenolic, flavonoid, alkaloid, carotenoid, saponin, vitamin E, and vitamin C contents as well as to evaluate their contribution to overall antioxidant activity. Among three solvents investigated, water could extract the highest levels of solid and saponin contents, whereas methanol was more effective for obtaining phenolic, flavonoid, and alkaloid compounds than other solvents. Meanwhile, ethanol was the best choice for extracting carotenoids and vitamin E. In various experimental models including DPPH radical scavenging activity, ABTS+ radical scavenging activity, and ferric reducing antioxidant power, methanol extract consistently showed significantly greater antioxidant activity than other extracts, while ethanol extract provided the most efficient inhibiting activity against ferrous chloride-induced oxidation of linoleic acid. In addition, the scavenging efficiency of ethanol extract toward DPPH and ABTS+ radicals was significantly higher than the water extract, and vice versa was the case for ferric reducing antioxidant power. Overall, methanol was found to be the most favorable solvent for the extraction of phenolic, flavonoid, and alkaloid compounds that are promising as natural antioxidants. However, different solvents may be used to extract specific antioxidant compounds with distinctive antioxidant activity.

Nyctanthes arbour-tristis is a shrub belongs to the family Oleaceae. The flowers of this plant are fragrant since the presence of flavonol glycosides. It has also been reported for the presence of β-sitosterol, iridoid glycosides, tannins etc., and known to have immunostimulant, hepatoprotective, antiviral and antifungal activities. In the present study an attempt is made to identify antioxidant capacity and anthelminthic potential of methanolic flower extract of Nyctanthes arbour-tristis. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by total phenolic content assay, total flavonoids content assay, free radical scavenging activity and reducing ability methods. Anthelmintic activity was evaluated on Perithima posthuma using Piperazine citrate as standard drug. The results obtained for the above activities reveals that Nyctanthes arbour-tristis shows considerable antioxidant activity for all the methods and anthelminthic potential at 300 mg/ml. The current investigation is intended to evaluate the content of phytochemical constituents and antioxidant potential of hydroalcoholic extracts of stem and root of Grewia serrulata DC (HAESGS & HAERGS) and leaf and bark of Grewia Nervosa (Lour.) panigrahi (HAELGN & HAEBGN). Initially, all the extracts at different concentrations were estimated for their total phenolic content and total flavonoid content. The study was further extended for their antioxidant potential evaluation using various in vitro methods such as 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, hydroxyl radical and superoxide radical scavenging assays. The total phenolic content (mg gallic acid equivalent per gram of extract) was high in HAELGN (170.82±0.19) and HAERGS (123.00±0.48) than HAESGS (111.2±0.26) and HAEBGN (119.60±0.23). The total flavonoid content (mg quercetin equivalent per gram) is greater in HAERGS (71.24±0.50) and HAESGS (65.68±0.27) than HAELGN (55.82±0.35) and HAEBGN (62.38±0.45). The IC50 values (µg/ml) of different plant extracts inferred that DPPH radical scavenging activity is greater in HAELGN (42.91±0.88) and HAEBGN (53.87±0.35) than HAESGS (126.73±1.20) and HAERGS (88.87±1.25). However, hydroxyl and superoxide radical scavenging activity is more in HAERGS (135.41±1.19 & 88.00±1.42) and HAELGN (172.28±1.91 & 108.163±1.09) than HAESGS (237.3±1.65 & 110.074±0.87) and HAEBGN (204.7±1.04 & 125.54±1.07). The results of present comprehensive analysis demonstrated that both the plants Grewia serrulata DC and Grewia Nervosa (Lour.) panigrahi possess high phenolic, flavonoid contents and potential antioxidant activity, and could be used as a valid source of natural antioxidants and might be utilized for pharmacological screening of various therapeutic activities.
