A simple method is presented for evaluating the water-proofness quality of paints on lining materials. The method is based on measuring the integral capillarity in dependence on time, and then comparing this value to the value determined for the basic lining material. Measurements of the effective water vapor permeability then provide information on the risk of condensation which may increase after applying the paint. A practical application of the method is performed with four Karlocolor paints on glass concrete substrates. All the Karlocolor paints are found to be very effective materials for driven rain protection. The diffusion properties of all the paints are found to be excellent.

AbstractIn this study, we reported a facile and economical strategy for producing a functional protein-based composite film that was based on soybean protein isolate (SPI), eggshell membrane (ESM) and eugenol (Eu). The composite films were also characterized by mechanical, water vapor permeability (WVP), UV barrier, water resistance, hydrophobicity, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. The results suggested the appropriate content of ESM could significantly enhance the mechanical, barrier, water resistance and hydrophobicity performances of the film. The addition of Eu into the SPI/ESM film could improve not only these properties, but also antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. The intermolecular interaction between SPI, ESM and Eu was mainly hydrogen bond confirmed by the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicated a good compatibility existed between SPI and ESM, and the Eu could be well emulsified and dispersed into the SPI/ESM film matrices network. Such edible films carried potentially developed in active packaging applications.

The objective of this study was to develop an active banana starch film (BSF) incorporated with banana peel extract. We compared the film’s properties with commercial wrap film (polyvinyl chloride; PVC). Moreover, a comparison of the quality of minced pork wrapped during refrigerated storage (7 days at ±4 °C) was also performed. The BSF with different concentrations of banana peel extract (0, 1, 3, and 5 (%, w/v)) showed low mechanical properties (tensile strength (TS): 4.43–31.20 MPa and elongation at break (EAB): 9.66–15.63%) and water vapor permeability (3.74–11.0 × 10−10 g mm/sm2 Pa). The BSF showed low film solubility (26–41%), but excellent barrier properties to UV light. The BSF had a thickness range of 0.030–0.047 mm, and color attributes were: L* = 49.6–51.1, a* = 0.21–0.43, b* = 1.26–1.49. The BSF incorporated with banana peel extracts 5 (%, w/v) showed the highest radical scavenging activity (97.9%) and inhibitory activity of E. coli O157: H7. The BSF showed some properties comparable to the commercial PVC wrap film. Changes in qualities of minced pork were determined for 7 days during storage at ±4 °C. It was found that thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) of the sample wrapped with the BSF decreased compared to that wrapped with the PVC. The successful inhibition of lipid oxidation in the minced pork was possible with the BSF. The BSF incorporated with banana peel extract could maintain the quality of minced pork in terms of oxidation retardation.

The main purpose of the present study was to characterize the juice and rind of the Persian lime (Citrus latifolia) with different quality of samples, by means of the Photoacoustic Spectroscopy (PAS) technique. In agreement to the Mexican quality standards, the samples under study were classified into four degrees of quality i.e. Extra, Second, Third and Waste classes. We have used PAS to characterize the optical properties of each one of the samples. Thus, we have obtained the absorption spectra of the juice as well as in that part of the rind called flavedo. After that, using another different photoacoustic configuration, we have measured the water vapor permeability of the albedo; i.e. the innermost, white and spongy layer of the rind. Our results show that PAS is a reliable technique to get the grading quality of samples in situ of fresh fruits such as Persian limes by means of the study of some of their physical properties.

A contaminação microbiológica das amostras ressaltou a importância das boas práticas de fabricação (BPF) na qualidade do queijo Minas frescal.</p><p>Abstract</p><p><span lang="EN-US">The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the influence of Low Density Polyethylene plastic bags (LDPE) and vacuum packaging on the color, physicochemical and microbiological quality of Minas fresh cheese. 10 cheeses from 5 artisan producers from the city of Belo Horizonte were acquired two days after fabrication. The cheeses were divided into two groups, each one with 15 units (three pieces of five chesses), and stored in a refrigerator at 6 ° C until the day of analysis. The analysis of pH, humidity content, fat content, microbiological and the study of color were made on days 0, 10 and 20, both in the inner and the outer part of the product. The use of chemometric tools, such as Principal Component Image Analysis (Image PCA), was able to detect the color changes of the samples during the observation period and correlate them with the two types of packaging and the variations on the physical chemical parameters. The results showed that the characteristics of the packages related to gases and water vapor permeability have provided physical, chemical and microbiological changes in the samples, resulting in different shades of yellow, perfectly highlighted by the PCA. Microbiological contamination of the samples stressed the importance of good manufacturing practices (GMP) on the quality of Minas fresh cheese.</span></p>

The improvement of the postharvest quality of tomato fruits was evaluated using an edible coating functionalized with an Flourensia cernua extract evaluating the antifungal, structural, barrier, and optical properties. The formulation and evaluation of an edible coating and its application on tomato was evaluated using a response surface methodology to determine the ideal concentrations of candelilla wax, whey protein, and glycerol. Edible films showed good barrier properties, with water vapor permeability varying from 0.435–0.404 g mm/m2 day kPa. The addition o F. cernua extract showed significant improvement in the transparency of films. The edible coating applied to tomato reduced weight and firmness loss. The sensory evaluation proved that the product obtained is acceptable for consumers. The edible coating added with F. cernua extract was the most effective in inhibiting the growth of pathogenic fungi and the visual appearance at the end of storage confirmed the beneficial effect of the edible coating.

In this study, the konjac glucomannan (KGM)/carrageenan (KC)/nano-silica film was prepared and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The preservation quality of white mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) packed using the films was also determined. The nano-silica dosage was found to affect the properties of the nanocomposite KGM/KC films. The results indicated that the properties of the films were significantly improved with the addition of nano-silica. The water vapor permeability, water solubility, moisture absorption, and light transmittance of KGM/KC/nano-silica films were significantly affected by the nano-silica dosage. In this study, the optimal nano-silica dosage to incorporate into the film in order to achieve excellent performance was 0.3%. Strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds were also observed between KGM/KC and nano-silica in the KGM/KC/nano-silica film by FTIR. In addition, the KGM/KC/nano-silica film markedly reduced the browning index, delayed the weight loss and softening, and extended the shelf life of mushrooms during storage at 4 °C. The KGM/KC film modified using nano-silica can provide a potential method for improving the preservation quality of white mushrooms during storage.

Disposable diapers are very important in terms of babies’ health because they are in touch with the baby’s skin. Disposable diapers have sheets with different functions from each other. The main layers of disposable diapers are as follows: top sheet, absorbent layer and back sheet. The function of the top sheet is to pass the liquid to the lower absorbent layer whereas the function of the absorbent layer is to absorb the liquid. As for the back sheet, this layer keeps the liquid inside and prevents it from leaving the diaper. The back sheet is usually a nonwoven/ polyethylene (PE) film composite. Considering the babies’ health, breathable back sheets are mostly used in baby diapers to keep the skin drier. These have a positive effect on the baby’s skin, especially in terms of occlusion, diaper dermatitis. In this study, the performance properties of some commercial baby diaper back sheet layers have been investigated. For this purpose, weight, thickness, air permeability, water vapor permeability and water resistance tests were applied to back sheet samples with different fabric mass as breathable and non-breathable films. All back sheet samples are SMS nonwoven/ polyethylene (PE) film composites. Breathable samples have a larger fabric mass than non-breathable samples. For breathable samples, while increasing mass, air permeability and water vapor permeability decrease, water resistance increases. On the other hand, the same tendency is not seen in non-breathable samples. Breathable samples have higher air permeability, water vapor permeability, water resistance, and bursting strength than non-breathable samples. Consequently, the using of a baby diaper containing breathable back sheet is more proper in terms of baby’s skin health.
