Modern welding processes that can easily be automated (such as friction stir welding, laser welding and ultrasonic welding) are gaining popularity in joining metal-polymer hybrid structures. This field of science is intensively studied around the globe, as a dependable, productive joining method that directly produces structurally sound joints between a metal and a polymer structure could unleash unforeseen possibilities in the vehicle industry. In our experiments, we manufactured hybrid steel-poly(methyl-methacrylate) (PMMA) joints with laser welding, using the 2p design of experiment method. We measured the effect of cellulose reinforcing fibres (in varying weight percentages) on the transparency and weldability of the PMMA material and the effect of welding parameters on the mechanical properties of the joints. We also examined the vicinity of the welded seam with scanning electron microscopy.

Technology of Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a relatively new technique for joining metal. In some cases on Aluminum joining, FSW gives better results compared with the arc welding processes, including the quality of welds and less distortion. The purpose of this study is to analyze the parameters effect of high speed tool rotation onmicro Friction Stir Spot Welding(μFSSW) to theshear strengthof welds. In this case, Aluminum material A1100, with thickness of 0.4 mm was used. Tool material of HSS material was shaped with micro grinding process. The spindle speed was fixed at 30000 rpm. Tool shoulder diameter was 3 mm, and a length of pin was 0.7 mm. The parameter variations used in this study were the variable of pin diameter (1.5 mm, 2.0 mm, and 2.5 mm), a variable ofplunge speed(2 mm/min, 4 mm/min, 6 mm/min), and the variable ofdwell time(2 seconds, 4 seconds, 6 seconds). Where the variation of these parameters will affect to the mechanical properties of welds (as response) was theshear strength.Response Surface Methods(RSM) was used to analyze μFSSW parameters with theshear strengthof welds. From the result of experiment and analysis, it is shown that the important welding parameters in high speed μFSSW process are pin diameter and plunge speed.

Technology of Friction Stir Welding (FSW) as a technique for joining metal is relatively new. In some cases on Aluminum joining, FSW gives better results compared with the Arc Welding processes, including the quality of welds and less distortion. FSW can even use milling machine or drilling machine, by replacing the tools and the appropriate accessories. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of process parameters onmicro Friction Stir Lap Weldingto the tensile load of welds. In this case, Aluminum material A1100, with thickness of 0.4 mm was used. Tool material of HSS material was shaped with micro grinding process. Tool shoulder diameter was 3 mm, while the diameter pin was 2 mm and a length of pin was 0.7 mm. The parameter variations used in this study were the variable of spindle speed (2300, 2600, and 2900 rpm), variable oftooltilt angle(0, 1, 2 degree) and a variable ofFeed rate(50, 60, 70 mm/min). Where the variation of these parameters will affect to the mechanical properties of welds (as response) was the tensile load. Analysis and optimization parameters between the micro FSLW parameters with the tensile load of welds, is used aResponse Surface Methods(RSM). From the result of experiment and analysis, it is shown that the important welding parameter in Micro Friction Stir Lap welding process is tilt angle.

A tailor welded blank (TWB) includes two or more blanks joined together in order to make a single blank. Different welding methods are used to join blanks with different characteristics and form TWBs. In this study, a comparison is made among the effects of three different welding methods namely CO2 laser welding, friction stir welding (FSW), and friction stir vibration welding (FSVW) on mechanical and formability properties of developed TWBs. AA6061 alloy sheets with different thicknesses (1.2 and 0.8 mm) are joined to get TWBs. The forming limit diagram (FLD) and limiting dome height (LDH) are applied to assess the formability. The Taguchi method is applied to find the optimum values of welding parameters. It is concluded that TWBs made by FSVW have higher mechanical properties and formability compared to TWBs made by FSW and CO2 laser welding. The results also indicate that FLD for TWBs made by FSW is higher than FLD for TWBs made by CO2 laser welding and FLD0, for TWBs made by FSVW, increases as vibration frequency increases.

In this work, we investigated the technological features of promising technologies for laser welding and friction stir welding of high-strength aluminum-lithium alloy V-1469. The modes of laser welding and friction stir welding have been carried out. In this article, we showed the perspective welding methods provide high values of ductility and impact toughness, while the strength of welded joints is not less than 0,8 of the strength of the base material and values of low cycle fatigue is not less than 110•103 cycles. The results allows to propose laser welding and friction stir welding processes as an alternative to riveted joint for aluminum-lithium alloy V-1469 as applied to the elements of the fuselage.

Abstract Light-alloys play a significant role in saving weight in automotive and aerospace industries; however, a few joining methods guarantee mechanical and fatigue strengths for high performance application. Even conventional arc welding processes do not offer constant quality joints. Therefore, this study uses an alternative solid-state welding process, friction stir welding (FSW), to analyze post processing microstructures and assess mechanical and fatigue strength. Magnesium alloy AZ31B plates were welded using different welding parameters in a dedicated FSW machine. The effect of the spindle speed (ω) and welding speed (ν) on the microstructure, the tensile strength and fatigue were studied. The stirred zone (SZ) at the FS-welded joints presented a microstructure composed by homogeneous equiaxial grains, refined by dynamic recrystallization. A rise in grain size, weld bead width, tensile and fatigue strengths with the increase of speed ratio (ω/ν) were observed. Results of the fatigue and mechanical strength here presented outperformed results from welds made with conventional milling machines.

Compared to the many fusion welding processes that are routinely used for joining stainless steel 316L, the friction stir welding (FSW) process is an emerging solid state joining process in which the material that is being welded does not melt and is being recast. The welding parameters play a major role in deciding the weld quality. In this investigation an attempt has been made to understand the influences of rotational speed and traverse speed of the tool on the microstructure of the friction stir processing zone in stainless steel 316L. Five different tool rotational speeds have been used to fabricate the joints at four different traverse speeds from this investigation which is the optimum for the tool speed and higher or lower amounts of these parameters are not useful for the process.

Polymers are widely used in automotive parts and fields like mechatronics and biomedical engineering because of their excellent properties, such as high durability and light weight. Welding of polymers has grown to be an important field of research due to its relevance among products of everyday life. Through transmission laser welding (TTLW) has been frequently selected by the contemporary re-searchers in the field of welding as it is relatively modern and more efficient than other welding processes. This pa-per reviews the influence of different processing parameters, including laser power, scanning speed, standoff distance, and clamping pressure. The present article is expected to provide the reader with a comprehensive under-standing of TTLW and research on the aforementioned four welding parameters in TTLW. The significance of finite element modeling, a few simulation studies, different optimization approaches, morphological characteristics, and other behaviors of laser welded polymers will be included in the next part of the review.
