Background: The increased serum uric acid (SUA) levels have been linked to macro vascular disease in Type 2 Diabetes Melitus. The correlation between serum uric acid levels and diabetic peripheral neuropathy has not been addressed properly. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between high serum uric acid levels and diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Methods: This was a case-control design study and the sampling was done consecutively by following the inclusion and the exclusion criteria. The diabetic peripheral neuropathy was evaluated using Electroneuromyography (EMNG) and the serum were taken for uric acid level examination. Chi square test was used for the correlation analysis. Result: Thirty subjects were enrolled and divided into an experimental group of 15 subjects and a control group of 15 subjects as well. We found that the diabetic peripheral neuropathy did not show a significant correlation with high serum uric acid levels, p=0,136 and OR 3,143 (CI 95% 0,681-14,503). Conclusions: There was no correlation between high serum uric acid levels with diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by relative or absolute deficiency of insulin, resulting in glucose intolerance.Objectives: The present study was planned to see the associations of serum uric acid with positive Rheumatoid factor in type 2 male diabetes mellitus patients. Methodology: This case control study was carried out at the department of Biochemistry at Ibrahim Medical College, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The duration of the study was from June 2015 to June 2016 for a period of one year. In this present study, male patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were taken as case group and age and sex matched healthy male were taken as control group. Rheumatoid factor was measured from the blood of all case and control group respondents. Others blood para meters were also measured for the correlation with the diabetes mellitus patients.Results: In this present study, 110 male patients presented with type 2 diabetes mellitus were recruited as case and age and sex matched healthy male were recruited as control. More rheumatoid factor positive in type 2 DM male patients with the uric acid range between 6.5 to 9.5 mg/dL. The number of patients was 5 out of total 9 rheumatoid factor positive cases. In this study serum uric acid was significantly correlated with rheumatoid factor in type 2 male diabetic patients. Rheumatoid factor positive cases were taking insulin among 9 and it was statistically significantly associated (p<0.001). Conclusion: In this study serum uric acid is significantly associated with positive rheumatoid factor in type 2 male diabetic patients.Journal of Current and Advance Medical Research 2017;4(2):58-62

BACKGROUND:Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a major non-communicable disease resulting from insulin resistance and is associated with cardiovascular,neurological and renal complications.Recent studies show association of hyperuricemia and Diabetes Mellitus.Uric acid increases oxidative stress that leads to vascular dysfunction and high intra glomerular pressure leading to renal complications.High serum creatinine is an indicator of renal compromise. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate serum uric acid and serum creatinine levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and to find association between them. METHODOLOGY: The study was conducted in Osmania general hospital. Fifty cases of established Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus formed the study group and 50 normal healthy individuals formed the control group. Serum uric acid, Fasting Blood Glucose (FBS) and serum creatinine were estimated by colorimetric enzymatic methods on Beckman coulter AU5800.Mean values were compared in cases and controls using student t- test.Study group was further studied under 2 subgroups with serum Uric acid < 7 mg/dl and ≥7 mg/dl.In these 2 subgroups the association of Serum uric acid with FBS and creatinine was analysed statistically. RESULTS: Serum uric acid were found high in cases(7.63+/- 3.36)as compared to controls(4.48+/- 1.09) p value < 0.001.Serum creatinine were also high in cases(1.59+/- 1.39 )as compared to controls ( 0.87+/- 0.29) p value <0.005.Study subgroup with serum uric acid ≥7 mg/dl was associated with high creatinine and high fasting blood sugar levels when compared to subgroup with serum uric acid <7 mg/dl. CONCLUSION: Our study showed increased serum uric acid and serum creatinine levels in cases when compared to controls.There was significant association between high serum uric acid and high creatinine levels in cases.Therefore,it is important to measure serum uric acid and serum creatinine levels in diabetics for early detection of renal pathology.

Purpose: To determine the effect of a supportive educational intervention based on the Orem self-care model on women with type 2 diabetes and diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Design: A randomized controlled trial. Setting: Hospital outpatient diabetes clinic. Subjects: Adult women with type 2 diabetes and mild-to-moderate diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Out of 410 patients, 120 diabetic patients were recruited and randomly assigned to trial group ( N = 60) and control group ( N = 60). Intervention: The trial group received a designed intervention consist of one-month supportive educational program with three months of follow-up (totally four months), based on self-care requisites according to the Orem self-care regarding diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The control group only received a routine care program in the diabetes clinic. Main measurements: The main outcomes were symptoms and severity of diabetic neuropathy. Further outcomes were fasting blood sugar and glycosylated hemoglobin. Results: By the end of the intervention, the number of participants reduced from 60 to 58 in the trial group and to 57 in the control group (totally 115). The intervention significantly decreased mean score of diabetic neuropathy symptoms (trial group: 3.26 vs. control group: 9.57, P = 0.001), severity (trial group: 5.86 vs. control group: 9.02, P = 0.001), fasting blood sugar (trial group: 151 vs. control group: 204, P = 0.001), and glycosylated hemoglobin (trial group: 7.85 vs. control group: 8.62, P = 0.004). Conclusion: Delivering a supportive-educational intervention based on the Orem self-care model on outpatient diabetes clinic can decrease the symptoms and severity of diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Objective: Mexiletine is an anti-arrhythmic agent also used for the treatment of painful diabetic neuropathy. In this study, the effect of mexiletine on body weight was evaluated in type 2 diabetes patients with diabetic neuropathy exhibiting visceral obesity. Methods: Type 2 diabetes patients with neuropathy exhibiting visceral obesity (n = 21) treated by mexiletine (300 mg/day) and a control group of type 2 diabetes patients with the same condition who received vitamin B12 (n = 12) were retrospectively evaluated. Body weight, waist circumference, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), blood pressure, liver function, serum lipids, and serum uric acid were assessed before and 6 months after the treatment. Results: Mexiletine significantly decreased body weight and waist circumference. The changes in body weight and waist circumference in 6 months in the mexiletine group were greater than in the control group. In metabolic parameters, there were significant decreases in triglyceride (TG) and serum uric acid. There were positive relationships between the change in body weight and the changes in TG, uric acid, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and HbA1c. Conclusions: Mexiletine may affect body weight regulation. It ameliorated the metabolic parameters possibly by decreasing visceral fat. Further study should be performed to clarify the mechanism of the effect.

Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a heterogeneous disease which is characterized by variable degrees of insulin resistance or/and impaired insulin secretion as well as its deficiency (absolute/relative). The study was carried out to determine the relationship between serum concentration of uric acid and HbA1c among the geriatric group with type 2 diabetes mellitus in diabetic camps carried out at Amravati. We performed a cross sectional study on 30 patients of both genders of geriatric group, and a control group of 30 age and sex matched normal healthy individuals. Serum uric acid was tested by Uricase/PAP method [7, 15] and HbA1c by NycoCard READER II (color reflectometry) [6]. We observed the positive correlation between uric acid and HbA1c, as 0.080 which was found to be significant as 2.50 between the uric acid and HbA1c in geriatric patients of type 2 Diabetes. In healthy controls, we observed the positive correlation between uric acid and HbA1c as 0.074 which was not significant.
