PRESERVING TRADITIONAL CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES AND MATERIALS AS AN ANSWER TO FUTURE ENERGY-FUEL CRISIS

Once a highly skilled and experienced professor told us: the future of architecture is in its handcraft past. We were not able to completely understand him at that time. Looking forward to the future where architecture and engineering professionals will perform facing energy fuel crisis and global warming, an endogenous approach, working with what is available, may be a subsistence tool. Preserving and further development of traditional construction materials, methods and techniques now has become a must, not form the cultural heritage stand point but as a survival instrument. In this paper we will analyze three different roofing systems, two of them ancestral techniques; toquilla leaf roof and straw thatch roofs, using them in real contemporary construction circumstances by incorporating them into the professional life through real construction projects and the educational system through Con lo que hay, a design-build class room in architectural school in Ecuador, facing them with conventional zinc metal roofing. This study will show the impact of recovering these techniques and materials within the academic, the professional, scientific development and on the local economies.

Having experienced an economic crisis earlier, Taiwan was on its way to recovery when the crisis struck in 1997. In general, Taiwan's labor market was hardly affected by the crisis. Although the demand for foreign workers continues, there will be a decline in the employment of foreign workers in the future. The completion of construction projects and the upgrading of the economic structure would imply a lesser demand for foreign workers in the next few years. In the future, while the Taiwanese labor market would be more restrictive of less-skilled workers, it would be more open to professionals and highly skilled.

The article aims to investigate the feasibility of straw as an alternative to traditional construction materials, with particular reference to the retrofit of buildings. This paper is part of the international debate on environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, and rehabilitation of the existing building heritage and reports the results of research carried out at the Department of Architecture and Design of the Politecnico di Torino. After initial research and classification of the main construction techniques that can be used to realize straw thermal coats, a survey was started to collect opinions on the use of straw in construction from professionals and potential users. At the same time, one on-site measurement campaign was carried out to assess the thermal transmittance of the straw insulation coat. The different investigations – literature research, surveys, experimentation – highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of the use of straw and identified possible scenarios for its wider application in Italy.

The environmental impacts have become a series of problems in today’s construction environments. Environmental conditions can have an adverse impact on the duration, cost, and quality of construction activities. This study is conducted to describe and point out the impact of the environment on building construction projects in sodo town. The contractor can estimate the Productivity loss due to the impact of environment on construction activity can be either partial or complete: partial loss is generally attributed to reduced labor productivity and work stoppage which interrupt those activities. This study organized by using questioners. The research basically focused on identifying and quantifying different environmental impacts that can affect the construction progresses. As the research result the escalation of construction material price, the availability of construction materials around the area and the involvement of different construction parties and the climatic condition of the environments are the main findings that we have got from our analysis. Generally, this research guides to meet future demands for sustainable environmental development, economic development, expansion of different construction infrastructure for sodo town. Many contractors found in this area fall over different environmental challenges. So to overcome these problems, are some requirements expected from different parties. To minimize those environmental impacts the construction parties should make a detail feasible study about the overall environmental conditions of sodo town before they decided to start up any construction works.

Good materials management on large construction projects is critical for maximizing productivity and project performance. When key materials are temporarily lost, whole crews may be left idle and the project may be delayed. When key materials are completely lost, the impact can be enormous. In fact, one of the major problems in managing construction materials and equipment is tracking them in the supply chain and knowing their location on large job sites. Fortunately, location can now be automatically estimated within metres using emerging technologies. This paper proposes a general implementation model for automated construction materials tracking and locating on large industrial projects, such as refineries and power plants. It includes a methodology for determining what type of technology should be used for different types of projects and construction materials. It is based on an analysis of the capabilities of emerging technologies and on experience gained from implementing automated materials tracking prototypes on two large industrial projects. It is concluded that these technologies can produce substantial net benefits, if implemented properly on the right projects using the model described here.

Accelerating infrastructure development in Indonesia is a good thing, but this is not without problems. The COVID-19 pandemic is a problem that has a large and global impact, not least in Indonesia, especially in the construction industry sector. The construction project of the Soedono Madiun Hospital is one of the construction projects that have experienced the direct impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to review and analyze the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on construction projects in the case study of the construction project of the Soedono Madiun Hospital, and to find out the biggest impact of the covid-19 pandemic which has the most influence on construction projects in the case study of the construction project of the Soedono Hospital. Madison. The research method used to determine the biggest impact of the covid-19 pandemic on the cost and time aspects is the multiple linear regression analysis method with the help of Microsoft Excel. The other data analysis methods used in this study were the validity and reliability tests used in testing the questionnaire. The results of data analysis conducted in this study indicate that there are seven independent variables affect the dependent variable, namely the suitability of planning and project realization with the equation y= 94.186-0.376x1-0.108x2-1.014x3+0.873x4 for the time aspect, and the equation y=87,009 -0.0006x5-0.001x6-0.0002x7 for the cost aspect. With this equation, it can be seen that the independent variable that has the most influence on the dependent variable on the time aspect is the independent variable X3, namely the change in the time schedule due to delays in the arrival of construction materials by 1.014, while in the cost aspect is the independent variable X6, namely changes in costs due to instability. the price of construction materials is 0.001. So, it is hoped that there will be a project management handling that focuses on the most influential variable, namely construction materials.

The purpose of this article is to provide the basic model of Hofstede and Grays’ cultural values that relates the Hofstede’s cultural dimensions and Gray‘s accounting value. This article reviews some studies that prove the model and develop the research in the future. There are some evidences that link the Hofstede’s cultural values studies with the auditor’s judgment and decisions by developing a framework that categorizes the auditor’s judgments and decisions are most likely influenced by cross-cultural differences. The categories include risk assessment, risk decisions and ethical judgments. Understanding the impact of cultural factors on the practice of accounting and financial disclosure is important to achieve the harmonization of international accounting. Deep understanding about how the local values may affect the accounting practices and their impacts on the financial disclosure are important to ensure the international comparability of financial reporting. Gray’s framework (1988) expects how the culture may affect accounting practices at the national level. One area of the future studies will examine the impact of cultural dimensions to the values of accounting, auditing and decision making.
