The article provides a survey of ideas and initiatives advanced by Christian and Muslim religious leaders and believers towards a mutual religious rapprochement in the past more than fifty years. On the Christian side, the process was started at the Second Vatican Council and developed with the great personal involvement of all popes of the following half-century. Muslim positive initiatives, from official centres as well as from committed intellectuals, have appeared somewhat later and still have to combat hostile moves of partisans of radical Islamism. Our article discusses the culminating point reached so far in the positive efforts of Pope Francis in his meetings with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmad al-Tayyib, including their agreement on the fraternity as a desirable bond for all believers in God. Our reflections try to mark out the main points of understanding achieved by the two religious leaders in the document signed by them in Abu Dhabi in February 2019 and, thereafter, further developed by the Pope in his comprehensive encyclical Fratelli tutti, issued in Vatican on the feast of Saint Francis in October 2020.

One of the most important facts that the Second Vatican Council has revealed is that the point of the Church is not itself, but to go beyond itself, to be a community that preaches, serves, celebrates, and witnesses to the reign of God with due respect to the text and context. During the past century, the Church of the Middle East experienced the absence of an authentic missionary enthusiasm and the lack of a clear and pertinent theology with which it could face the challenge presented to Christianity by Islam. This challenge resides in its special role and mission before the Muslims, which this paper will further discuss and, in doing so, answer the question, How can the Church of the Middle East try to approach the Muslims in a time of violent Islamic fundamentalism and persecutions, in a region where most of the Christians are opting to remain distant or to emigrate?

Abstract This essay argues for a participatory synodal Church and the possible contributions of the African palaver as a model for participatory dialogue in the Roman Catholic Church. The African palaver is the art of conversation, dialogue, and consensus-building in traditional society that can be appropriated in the current search for a more inclusive and expansive participatory dialogue at all levels of the life of the Church. I will develop this essay first by briefly exploring some theological developments on synodality between the Second Vatican Council and Pope Francis and some of the contributions of the reforms of Pope Francis to synodality in the Church. Secondly, I will identify how the African palaver functions through examples taken from two African ethnic groups. I will proceed to show how the African palaver could enter into dialogue with other new approaches to participatory dialogue for a synodal Church.

This paper elaborates upon the Catholic Church’s teaching on religious freedom in the period from The French Revolution to The Second Vatican Council. Based on quotations from the original documents, the author presents the evolution of the Church’s position that switched from the initial rejection to the final acceptance of the religious freedom over past two centuries. The fact of this dramatic change begs the question about the continuity of tradition and credibility of the contemporary position of the Church. Based on the document by the International Theological Commission, “Memory and Reconciliation: The Church and the Faults of the Past,” as well as the teaching of Pope Benedict XVI, the author demonstrates that – in contrast to some contemporary interpretations – the hermeneutics of continuity is possible regarding Church’s teaching on religious freedom.

Many will have noticed how the renewal of the Church in modern times has drawn together strands of thought and behaviour that were in the past considered discordant. Thus the Second Vatican Council, it seems, in continuing the work of the First, would be likely to draw on that part of the Church’s heritage which had previously been in apparent conflict with the doctrine of papal supremacy: namely, the notion of the supremacy of the Church as a body and of the council or the episcopate. In some ways there is a remarkable degree of continuity between the thought of the Council of Basle (1431–49) and of the Second Vatican Council.

Recently, sociologists who study space have paid more attention to the importance of place, in other words—not just physical locations—but also the meanings, interpretations, and cultural symbols bound up within them. In this paper, I examine the “emplaced” and often gendered lived experiences of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Philadelphia after the Second Vatican Council. Drawing on archival research and in-depth qualitative interviews with nearly two dozen Sisters of St. Joseph, I analyze how the congregation negotiated and contested gendered spaces in the Church over the past fifty years. I explore the sisters’ occasionally tumultuous relationships and public disagreements with clergy, particularly about use of chapel and school space. I also examine the subtler ways—like presiding over funerals and annulment tribunals—that sisters in the congregation transgressed prescribed gendered boundaries in responding to the sacramental needs of the faithful and marginalized. Overall, I argue that sisters in the congregation adapted to changing pastoral needs and exercised agency as women in developing strategies of action to meet the needs of those whom they served.

SUMMARY: This article explores the way in which the event of Medellín as well as the document have played a significant part in the unfolding of pastoral and social ministries with and for Hispanic/Latinos in the United States over the past fifty years. The reception in the United States of Medellín in the wider context of the follow-up to the Second Vatican Council has been wide and deep in terms of several developments outlined here. Faith-based social ministries in Hispanic/Latino communities in the form of grass root community organizations in the tradition of Saul Alinsky found inspiration in Medellin’s option for the poor and pastoral de conjunto. Many other examples of Medellín’s impact are placed in the wider historical context of the past fifty years, the half century in which Hispanics/Latinos emerged as the majority of U.S. Catholics under the age of 35.RESUMO: Este artigo investiga a forma pela qual tanto o evento como o documento de Medellín tiveram papel significativo na evolução dos ministérios pastorais e sociais da população de origem latino-americana dos Estados Unidos nos últimos cinquenta anos. A recepção de Medellín nos Estados Unidos, dentro do contexto mais amplo que se seguiu ao Concílio Vaticano II, foi ampla e profunda, e é aqui delineada em seus muitos desdobramentos. Naquelas comunidades de origem latino-americana, na forma de organizações comunitárias de base conforme a tra­dição de Saul Alinsky, os ministérios sociais de cunho confessional foram influen­ciados pela opção pelos pobres e pela pastoral de conjunto lançadas por Medellín. Vários outros exemplos do impacto causado por Medellín são aqui situados no seu contexto histórico mais amplo da última metade de século, período no qual a população de origem latino-americana despontou como majoritária entre todos os católicos norte-americanos na faixa etária até 35 anos.

AbstractThis article examines the origins and development of bilateral theological dialogue between Methodists and Roman Catholics at a world level since it commenced in 1967 as a result of the Second Vatican Council. In taking stock of the dialogue, consideration is given to what has been achieved in successive phases during the past fifty years. A number of theological issues are identified as requiring further dialogue. The article concludes by outlining the present agenda of the international Methodist–Roman Catholic dialogue commission and briefly considering the future prospects for theological dialogue at a world level in the context of contemporary ecumenism.

O artigo analisa as controvérsias entre elites eclesiásticas católicas ao longo do processo de preparação do Sínodo Pan-Amazônico entre 2017 e 2019. Na primeira parte são identificados os atores e posicionamentos que emergiram nas disputas políticas em torno do Sínodo, buscando-se mostrar como elas estão implicadas em lutas pela auto-compreensão da Igreja católica enquanto organismo político, além de colocar em discussão estratégias distintas de inserção do catolicismo no mundo moderno. Na segunda parte, a partir da análise do documento que foi o epicentro da disputa (Instrumentum Laboris), argumenta-se que, na sua dimensão intra-eclesial, ele colocou em debate o processo de aprofundamento das reformas democratizantes iniciado com o Concílio Vaticano II e intensificado sob o governo do papa Francisco. Já na sua dimensão extra-eclesial (Igreja/mundo), o texto indica deslocamentos na compreensão e na estratégia de posicionamento da Igreja católica frente ao plano global e sinaliza para um processo que, mediado pela problemática ecológica, incorpora elementos da agenda pós-colonial. Abstract: The article analyzes the controversies among Catholic ecclesiastical elites during the process of preparation of the Pan-Amazon Synod between 2017 and 2019. In the first part we identify the actors and positions that emerged in the political disputes about the Synod, seeking to show how they are implicated in struggles for the self-understanding of the catholic church as a political organism, besides discussing different strategies of insertion of catholicism in the modern world. In the second part, from the analysis of the document that was the epicenter of the dispute (Instrumentum Laboris), it is argued that, in its intra-ecclesial dimension, it put into debate the process of deepening democratizing reforms that began with the Second Vatican Council. and intensified under the rule of Pope Francis. Already in its extra--ecclesial dimension, the text indicates shifts in the understanding and strategy of positioning of the Catholic church in relation to the global plan and points to a process that, mediated by ecological concern, incorporates elements of the postcolonial agenda.Keywords: Catholic church; Pope Francis; Synod; Amazon; Ecology.

Resumo: Este é um estudo teológico sobre o mistério da Encarnação do Verbono pensamento do Papa Francisco como fundamento sobre o qual ele se apoiapara propor, a partir da Evangelli Gaudium, uma renovação eclesial inadiável1,uma Igreja em permanente estado de missão2, a partir do Evangelho, núcleocentral do anúncio, para a manifestação da beleza do amor de Deus, reveladoem Jesus Cristo morto e ressuscitado3. Para o desenvolvimento desta pesquisaserá feita a análise de alguns números da Constituição Dogmática Dei Verbumcom o fim de melhor explicitar a revelação divina e a encarnação como ápiceda revelação. O resultado desta pesquisa é ajudar na percepção que o Papatem do Concílio Vaticano II sobre a Igreja e sua dimensão pastoral no mundo ecomo ele, nos passos do Concílio, propor uma renovação eclesial.Palavras-chave: Revelação. Evangelii gaudium.Abstract: This is a theological study on the mystery of the Incarnation of the Wordin the thought of Pope Francis as the grounds on which he relies to propose,from Evangelii Gaudium, an unchanging ecclesial renewal (EG 27), a Church in permanent state of mission (EG 20), from the Gospel, the central nucleus ofthe announcement, for the manifestation of the beauty of God’s love, as well asrevealed in Jesus Christ died and resurrected (EG 36). For the development ofthis research some numbers of the Dogmatic Constitution Dei Verbum will beanalyzed in order to better explain divine revelation and incarnation as the apexof the revelation. Throughout history there have been theological tensions between official church teachers and church theologians, creating at times a divide between both the magisterium and theologians and also between theologians of different methodological approaches. We offer as examples of tension the declarations by the USCCB's Committee on Doctrine (CD) on the “inadequacies in the theological methodology and conclusions” of our book and of the books of three other contemporary theologians. These examples afford us the opportunity both to consider the theological tensions in general and to propose a solution to them. We establish some ecclesial context for dialogue with the CD, calling attention to four factors in this context: first, recent patterns of discourse between theologians and the magisterium in statements issued against particular theologians; second, an important change in the Catholic concept of church; third, an equally important change in how Catholic theologians set about doing theological ethics; and fourth, the reaffirmation of the importance of conscience by the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s and, more recently, by Pope Francis.
