This study employs a small-scale survey to investigate the lives of Bangladeshi disabled residents in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Survey instruments include individual interviews and focus group discussions with people with disabilities in the Bangladeshi community. The paper also investigates the health and social care activities of Tower Hamlets Council through the lens of the social model of disability. The findings show that there are numerous facilities available for people with disabilities, but there is still a lack of satisfaction with the services provided to the community.

This paper deals with the participation of people with disabilities in the society. Participation is one of the central concepts in international documents that were created under the influence of the social model of disability, which has shifted the focus of responsibility from one?s impairment to his/her environment. Review of experiences of adults with disabilities regarding the obstacles they face in relation to employment, intimate relationships, marriage and parenthood shows that the intensity and quality of participation of people with disabilities depend on a complex interaction between a person?s characteristics and specificities and his/her immediate and wider environment.

DOI: 10.14746/kse.2019.16.1 The aim of the article is to present a critical analysis of the social model of disability. In the first part, the author discusses the genesis, essence and basic advantages of the social model of disability. Next, five major disadvantages of this model are analysed:/1/ avoiding dealing with impairment as an important aspect of the lives of people with disabilities, /2/ separating impairment from disability, /3/ assuming that all people with disabilities are exposed to social oppression, /4/ postulating the creation of an environment without barriers and /5/ assuming that disability is the basis of the identity of people affected by it. In the final part of the article, the author presents reflections on the possibility of creating a new, more holistic model of disability.

Polumysna O. Defining the status “person with a disability” in UkraineThe article finds that the term “person with a disability” has constantly evolved, the attitude of society towards a person with a disability has been constantly changing. The nicknames that society assigned to this category of people, calling them lame, idiots, beggars, lunatics, social outsiders, the mentally retarded, the retarded, scarecrows for the healthy, samovars, etc. are considered. It was found that these names indicated only a person's disability or position in society and did not identify him as an ordinary person with his own needs and problems to be solved. In the twentieth century, only how able / incapable a person is came to the fore. At the end of the XX – beginning of the XXI century in many countries society began to pay attention not only to the medical indications of people with disabilities, but began to talk about the equality of these people in society, i.e. the implementation of the social model of disability. It is noted that the use of the words in-valid, dis-ability, mal-formation already fosters in society a negative attitude towards people with disabilities. It has been studied that the vast majority of researchers called people with disabilities “people with disabilities”, “people with special needs”, “people with disabilities”. In addition, there are sharper statements such as “abnormal student with disabilities”, “child with defects”, “special child”. After the law was passed in 2017, most scholars began using the term “person with a disability”. It was found that people with disabilities living in Ukraine ask not to be called autistic, cerebral palsy, downs, people with special needs, disabilities, and put a person first, and then his disability. There has been and in fact there is no consensus between society, scientists and people with disabilities themselves, as they are called, which indicates a certain imbalance and lack or one-sided communication in society.

With the development of disability studies the awareness of “false universalization of disability” increased. It was realized that both theoretical and practical abuse is to treat disability as the main and even the only factor that binds the environment of people with disabilities. The configurations of the aspects of oppression and discriminatory attitudes have been in fact much more complex and elaborate than it was originally thought according to the promotion of the social model of disability. The article addresses the problem of multiplicity and simultaneous oppression, in which disability co-exists among other factors, considering gender, race or age of human as no less important factors of marginalization, violation of law and social exclusion.

The 100 Brasilia Rules include, for people with disabilities, among the groups of people who suffer denial of access to justice, as a result of their situation of vulnerability. They are not vulnerable as a consequence of their personal limitations, but because they are placed in a "condition or situation of vulnerability", as a result of the attitudinal and physical hostility of society, which is unable to include and anticipate the needs derived from their diversity in the design of a truly inclusive society.  In this context, we ask ourselves what role should courts play in face of the obstacles that a person with special needs have in the exercise of their rights?

Background: One in four Americans have a disability but remain an overlooked minority population at risk for health care disparities. Adults with disabilities can be high users of primary care but often face unmet needs and poor-quality care. Providers lack training, knowledge and have biased practices and behaviors toward people with disabilities (PWD); which ultimately undermines their quality of care. Focus of the Article: The aim is to identify behavior change interventions for decreasing health care disparities for people with disabilities in a healthcare setting, determine whether those interventions used key features of social marketing and identify gaps in research and practice. Research Question: To what extent has the social marketing framework been used to improve health care for PWD by influencing the behavior of health care providers in a primary health care setting? Program Design/Approach: Scoping Review. Importance to the Social Marketing Field: Social marketing has a long and robust history in health education and public health promotion, yet limited work has been done in the disabilities sector. The social marketing framework encompasses the appropriate features to aligned with the core principles of the social model of disability, which espouses that the barriers for PWD lie within society and not within the individual. Incorporating elements of the social model of disability into the social marketing framework could foster a better understanding of the separation of impairment and disability in the healthcare sector and open a new area of research for the field. Results: Four articles were found that target primary care providers. Overall, the studies aimed to increase knowledge, mostly for clinically practices and processes, not clinical behavior change. None were designed to capture if initial knowledge gains led to changes in behavior toward PWD. Recommendations: The lack of published research provides an opportunity to investigate both the applicability and efficacy of social marketing in reducing health care disparities for PWD in a primary care setting. Integrating the social model of disability into the social marketing framework may be an avenue to inform future interventions aimed to increase health equity and inclusiveness through behavior change interventions at a systems level.
