With the rapid growth of the online advertising market, Behavioral Targeting (BT), which delivers advertisements to users based on understanding of their needs through their behaviors, is attracting more attention. The amount of spend on behaviorally targeted ad spending in the US is projected to reach $4.4 billion in 2012 (Hallerman, 2008). BT is a complex technology, which involves data collection, data mining, audience segmentation, contextual page analysis, predictive modeling and so on. This chapter gives an overview of Behavioral Targeting by introducing the Behavioral Targeting business, followed by classic BT research challenges and solution proposals. We will also point out BT research challenges which are currently under-explored in both industry and academia.

In recent decades, the US fiscal condition has been characterised by high and rising debt. On a fiscal commons in which citizen-voters attempt, through their congressional representatives, to minimise tax payments, this is the expected outcome. In this article, we examine the effects of a tax policy that has concentrated tax liability on the upper end of the income distribution in light of another important trend: rapid growth in the higher-income segment of the income distribution. We find that growth in the higher-income segment of the income distribution – more people paying higher taxes – has made the tragedy of the fiscal commons less severe and slowed the pace to a possible ultimate default.

After a disappointing first quarter in which, in broad terms, the small growth in output in the OECD area could be attributed wholly to stock movements in the US, the second quarter brought a considerable improvement. Though US stockbuilding was much smaller, OECD countries' total GDP appears to have risen by about 1 per cent, with notably rapid growth in major countries where output had fallen in the first quarter (Germany especially, Japan, France and, on some estimates, Italy). This acceleration, based largely on consumers' expenditure, was moreover achieved in the face of adverse developments in the foreign trade sector, with many non-OECD countries, the oil producers in particular, reducing the volume of their imports to compensate in part for a worsening in their terms of trade.

The SARS-CoV-2 variant of concern B.1.617.2 displaced B.1.1.7 as the dominant variant in England and other countries. This study aimed to determine whether B.1.617.2 was also displacing B.1.1.7 in the United States. We analyzed PCR testing results and viral sequencing results of samples collected across the United States, and showed that B.1.1.7 was rapidly being displaced and is no longer responsible for the majority of new cases. The percentage of SARS-CoV-2 positive cases that are B.1.1.7 dropped from 70% in April 2021 to 42% in just 6 weeks. Our analysis showed rapid growth of variants B.1.617.2 and P.1 as the primary drivers for this displacement. Currently, the growth rate of B.1.617.2 was higher than P.1 in the US (0.61 vs. 0.22), which is consistent with reports from other countries. Lastly, we showed that B.1.617.2 was growing faster in counties with a lower vaccination rate.

Although the most recent US economic expansion began in 1991, rapid growth and job creation only date from 1996. This faster growth was driven principally be consumer demand, but while the stock market bubble that developed from 1996 might explain spending by upperincome groups, most share holdings are small. A more significant financial factor behind the boom has been the rapid growth of borrowing by both companies and households, whose debts now stand at a record high. This borrowing has been financed by massive inflows of financial capital from abroad, and the possibility that these could turn around is the greatest threat facing the US economy as the expansion comes to an end.

Curiosity about probiotic bacteria is high. This is not surprising given the rapid growth of the natural products market in the USA, which was 22% in 1995 (New Hope Natural Media, Boulder, CO). Although probiotic cultures are only one component of that market, this trend shows that consumers in the USA are increasingly taking a pro-active stance towards their health and are purchasing products not only to eliminate what is perceived as dietary negatives but to increase the levels of dietary positives (Wrick, 1995). This shift in consumer attitude bodes well for the development of the American probiotic market. This article describes the composition, promotion and labelling of probiotic-containing products, discusses attributes of commercial probiotic bacteria, and estimates the size of the probiotic market in the USA. This market information was obtained from several published (Anon, 1996a,b)and unpublished but commercially available (SPINS Information Services, San Francisco, CA and New Hope Natural Media, Boulder, CO) sources.
