AbstractThis paper presents the capabilities of ABAQUS finite-element program [1] in modelling sandwich beams and plates resting on deformable foundations. Specific systems of sandwich beams and plates separated by an elastic core layer were subjected to the action of point and distributed moving loads. A few theoretical examples are provided to present different techniques of modelling the foundations and the moving loads. The effects of the boundary conditions and of the foundation parameters on the deflections of the analysed structures are also presented.

The finite element program developed in previous work [1] for calculating the temperature distributions in the chip and tool in metal machining has been extended in its range of application. Specifically, the program no longer needs a flow field as input and it can accommodate a wide range of shear angle and contact lengths. An important feature of this paper is that temperature fields from the finite element method have been compared with temperatures obtained with a previously described metallographic method [7]. This is the first time these two techniques have been used for the same machining conditions and the comparisons are very good.

The aim of this paper was to carry out a theoretical (numerical) scientific research on the behavior of cast and recrystallized basalt, in order to use it as a material in the manufacture of structural elements of machine tools. A unitary methodology has been established for studying the eigenfrequency of structural elements for machine tools by the finite element method. Two basalt structural elements (beam type and plate type) were modeled, which were also made physically, and with the help of the COSMOS / Mark finite element program, the eigenfrequencies of the models was studied.

There are two basic approaches to solving the problem of heat and mass transfer in the numerical modeling of soil freezing: 1) using the finite difference method taking into account boundary conditions (the boundary, for example, is the freezing front); 2) using the finite element method without consideration of model boundaries. Both approaches have significant drawbacks, which leaves the issue of solving the problem for the numerical model of soil freezing acute and up-to-date. This article provides the physical setting of freezing that allows us to create a numerical model based on the solution by the finite element method, but at the same time reflecting the route of the freezing front, i.e. the model that combines both approaches to solving the problem of soil freezing. In order to confirm the correctness of the model, a number of experiments on physical modeling of model soil freezing have been performed, and a comparative analysis of the experimental data obtained and the calculation results based on the provided numerical model with the same boundary conditions as in the experiments was performed.

In the present paper, the goffered multilayered composite cylindrical shells is directly calculated by finite element method. Numerical results on displacements, internal forces and moments are obtained for various kinds of external loads and different boundary conditions.

The purpose of this research is to compare the results from two different computer programs of flow analysesof two levees at Port Arthur, Texas where rising water of a flood from Hurricane Ike occurred on the levees. The first program (Program 1) is a two-dimensional (2-D) transient finite element program that couples the conservation of mass flow equation with accompanying hydraulic boundary conditions with the conservation of force equations with accompanying x and y displacement and force boundary conditions, thus yielding total head, x displacement, and y displacement as unknowns at each finite element node. The second program (Program 2) is a 2-D transient finite element program that considers only the conservation of mass flowequation with its accompanying hydraulic boundary conditions, yielding only total head as the unknown at each finite element node. Compressive stresses can be computed at the centroid of each finite element when using the coupled program. Programs 1 and 2 were parallelized for high performance computing to consider thousands of realisations of the material properties. Since a single realisation requires as much as one hour of computer time for certain levees, the large realisation computation is made possible by utilising HPC. This Monte Carlo type analysis was used to compute the probability of unsatisfactory performance for under seepage, through seepage, and uplift for the two levees. Respective hydrographs from the flood resulting from Hurricane Ike were applied to each levee. When comparing the computations from the two programs, the most significant result was the two programs yielded significantly different values in the computed results in the two clay levees considered in this research.

The mechanical properties of age-hardenable aluminum alloy extrusions are critically dependent on the rate at which the part is cooled (quenched) after the forming operation. The present study continues the development of an intelligent spray quenching system, which selects the optimal nozzle configuration based on part geometry and composition such that the magnitude and uniformity of hardness (or yield strength) is maximized while residual stresses are minimized. The quenching of a complex-shaped part with multiple, overlapping sprays was successfully modeled using spray heat transfer correlations as boundary conditions within a finite element program. The hardness distribution of the heat-treated part was accurately predicted using the quench factor technique; that is, the metallurgical transformations that occur within the part were linked to the cooling history predicted by the finite element program. This study represents the first successful attempt at systematically predicting the mechanical properties of a quenched metallic part from knowledge of only the spray boundary conditions.

According to the bending equation and boundary conditions of skew plate in the oblique coordinates system parallel to the edge of the plate, expanding deflection and load into form of Fourier series, the paper derives and obtains unified solution of bending problem for the four-edge-supported skew plate under arbitrary load. Programmed and calculated by mathematica language, the paper also comes with deflections and moments under the condition of any oblique angles, ratios of side length and Poisson ratios. The results of the paper is compared with those by the finite element method in the example, and they’re in good agreement with each other. The paper extends the bending theory of rectangular plate to the skew plate of any angle. The theory being reliable and the result being accurate, the research of the paper can provide reference for engineering design.

The metal-forming process of shell nosing at room temperature was analyzed by the finite-element method. The strain-rate effects on materials properties were included in the analysis. In cold nosing simulations, the nine-node quadrilateral elements with quadratic velocity distribution were used for the workpiece. The treatment of a moving boundary in the analysis of nosing is discussed and successfully implemented in the finite-element program. FEM simulations of 105-mm dia. shells of AISI 1018 steel and aluminum 2024 were performed and solutions were obtained in terms of load-displacement curves, thickness distribution, elongation, and strain distributions. Comparisons with experimental data show very good agreement.
