Abstract The recent development of coherent light amplifiers and oscillators, now generally referred to as optical masers “or lasers,” has made feasible a host of new uses and applications of electromagnetic wave energy in the optical portion of the spectrum. Furthermore, the high degree of monochromaticity obtainable from an optical maser makes it a useful tool for spectroscopic investigations as well as for stimulating various types of chemical and physical reactions. The effect of vanadium doping transforms Bi4Ge3O12 single crystals into optical maser. This result can be observed after thermoluminescence at 556 nm.

AbstractSiC single crystals are grown at II-VI by the seeded sublimation technique. The process has been scaled up and optimized to support commercial production of high-quality 100 mm diameter, Semi-Insulating (SI) 6H substrates and 100 mm 4H n+ substrates. The growth process incorporates special elements aimed at achieving uniform sublimation of the source, steady growth rate, uniform doping and reduced presence of background impurities.Semi-insulating 6H substrates are produced using precise vanadium compensation. Vanadium doping is optimized to yield SI material with very high resistivity and low capacitance.Crystal quality of the substrates is evaluated using a wide variety of techniques. Specific defects, their interaction and evolution during growth are described with emphasis on micropipes and dislocations. The current quality of the 6H SI and 4H n+ crystals grown at II-VI is summarized.

AbstractA mathematical model is developed to study the behaviour of an oscillating wave energy converter in a channel. During recent laboratory tests in a wave tank, peaks in the hydrodynamic actions on the converter occurred at certain frequencies of the incident waves. This resonant mechanism is known to be generated by the transverse sloshing modes of the channel. Here the influence of the channel sloshing modes on the performance of the device is further investigated. Within the framework of a linear inviscid potential-flow theory, application of Green’s theorem yields a hypersingular integral equation for the velocity potential in the fluid domain. The solution is found in terms of a fast-converging series of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. The physical behaviour of the system is then analysed, showing sensitivity of the resonant sloshing modes to the geometry of the device, which concurs in increasing the maximum efficiency. Analytical results are validated with available numerical and experimental data.
