The large amounts of bamboo slips and wooden tablets unearthed in the excavation provided important materials for the explorations on the management of the central government of the Han and Jin empires to the administrative areas of commandery and district levels and the social lives of the local people at that time.

ON I DECEMBER 1966 THE BUNDESTAG ELECTED THE CHRISTIAN democrat leader Kurt Georg Kiesinger as head of a government formed by Christian democrats (CDU) and social democrats (SPD), by a majority of 340 (out of 496) members. The liberals (FDP), with 49 members, were pushed aside into opposition. For the first time since 1930 the social democrats entered a German central government, not as the result of an electoral victory but at the conclusion of an inner Crisis within the hitherto existing majority. The CDU whose prestige was badly damaged by this crisis continued to provide the chancellor. This helps to explain why some 60 members of the coalescing parties voted against the candidate. Public opinion oscillated between feelings of relief because of the end of a period of insecurity, and feelings of discomfort in view of an experiment which seemed unorthodox and hazardous. The disputes around the grosse Koalition (great coalition) thus revealed the ambiguity of conceptions of parliamentary government as they had developed since the establishment of the Federal Republic.

Tourists who visit a city for the first time may find it difficult to decide on places to visit, as the amount of information in the Web about cultural and leisure activities may be large. Recommender systems address this problem by suggesting the points of interest that fit better with the user’s preferences. This paper presents a novel recommender system that leverages tweets to build user profiles, taking into account not only their personal preferences but also their travel habits. Association rules, which are mined from the previous visits of users documented on Twitter, are used to make the final recommendations of places to visit. The system has been applied to data of the city of Barcelona, and the results show that the use of the social media-based clustering procedure increases its performance according to several relevant metrics.

The Siberian gendarme district existed longer than all other gendarme districts in the Russian Empire – almost 70 years, and was liquidated at the beginning of the 20th century. Since there are no research projects aimed at the study of the social portrait of the leaders of this district until now, this problem was chosen as the focus of this article. The study is based on an analysis of the personnel and service records of gendarme officers kept in archives, many of them are newly discovered and published for the first time, and orders to the servicemen of the Gendarmerie Corps and legislative acts of the central government. The article concludes by arguing that in the entire history of the district only ten people held the position of the Chief, and the average term of their office was 5 years and 8 months. They were all middle-aged people, professional military, who for various reasons transferred to the gendarmerie service, for whom it was the main source of income. For all ten persons who held the post of district gendarmerie chief in Siberia, it was both the peak and the last stage of their gendarmerie career, the work associated with this post they carried out diligently and fulfilled all required duties.

Cable wakeboarding can be defined as a risky adventure recreation activity in which young people are the primary participants. Based on interviews and observations focusing on cable wakeboarding in Sweden, young people’s understanding of the risks associated with this activity was analysed. According to the thematic content analysis of the interview transcripts and field notes, the participants’ interpretations of risk were related to the social/spatial context of the adventure recreation activity. Furthermore, the analysis resulted in the identification of two themes: the content of the cable wakeboarding information and procedures, and the city beach community. Overall, the participants’ sense-making of risk in adventure recreation was explored and found to be framed by local attachment and a combination of individualistic and collectivistic perspectives of risk.

The culmination of nationwide secular Celebrations of 1000 years of Polish statehood in Gniezno in April 1996 The article comprises the first description of the events surrounding secular celebrations of 1000 years of Polish statehood in Gniezno (April 9–April 16, 1966). Poland’s communist authorities intended for these events to be the inauguration of national celebrations and the culmination of long preparations at the local, regional, and national levels. Due to political factors, the celebrations clashed with the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of Poland’s christening, prepared and hosted by the Church authorities. The authors of the article used files from the fonds of the National Archive in Poznań and its branch in Gniezno. Taking into consideration the reports of local authorities, the authors reconstructed (for the first time) the social actions undertaken in villages and towns in the Gniezno region as part of celebrations. It was pointed out that local people were rarely motivated to undertake these actions by ideological considerations. The authors reconstructed the course of events, and therefore were able to demonstrate what the originators’ goals and motivations were when developing the schedules and scenarios of particular events. Digital source data presented in the article also allowed them to demonstrate how elaborate the celebrations were.

The historical areas are frequently early-developed districts in the city. Due to the urban modernization, the cultural heritages composed the historical area are demolished and then replaced by communal facilities to upgrade the urban faculties. However, the urban context is the outcome of the social transition of the city; therefore, the spatial characteristic of historical area responds to the process of the development of the city. The value of the cultural heritages is not only the its own historical significance but the contemporary living culture of the city. Because of the large spatial scale, the conservation and regeneration of historical area needs a long-term process with interdisciplinary professional issues. As a result, the current problems are that the policy is dominated by government and scholars while local people are difficult to participate, and is more emphasis on the outsiders and tourists than inhabitants. By several years participant observation, this research found out that the participant process of the activities can bring local groups and residents to identify themselves with the historical area; and the participant model with multiple and integrated local organization brings themselves up on professional knowledge and ability in the aspect of the cultural heritages. To present and to interpret autonomously the cultural connotation of the activity by the local people is helpful to continue the development of the dynamic culture. On the other hand, the transformed and multi-used places for the activity can respond to the dilemma of the modernization and the conservation. The cultural heritages related to activities may become supportive environment during the development process of the historical area in the city.

Building Mid-Republican Rome treats for the first time the development of the Mid-Republican city from 396 to 168 BCE. As Romans established imperial control over Italy and beyond, the city itself radically transformed into the center of the Mediterranean world. The book describes profound changes in terms of new urban architecture and new socioeconomic structures and argues that such developments were in fact closely linked: building Mid-Republican Rome was highly costly, and meeting such costs had significant implications for the structures and institutions of urban society. By viewing building as an historical process, this book brings architectural and socioeconomic developments into a single account of urban change. The author, a specialist in the period’s history and archaeology, assembles an array of evidence, from literary sources to coins, epigraphy, and archaeological remains. Chapters describe the supplies of material and especially labor for urban production. The period saw the decline of architectural production based on obligation and dependency and the rising importance of slavery and an urban labor market. A quantitative model of the costs of the period’s largest monument, the Republican city walls, is contextualized within the flow of labor in the larger productive economy. A new account of Mid-Republican building technology allows for a better understanding of the social character of the city’s builders. The study thus sheds light on a little known but formative period in Rome’s development, while the innovative synthesis of a major Western city’s spatial and historical aspects will hold appeal to a broad readership.
