Feasibility and acceptability of the Bod Pod procedure and changes in body composition from admission to discharge in adolescents hospitalized with eating disorders

AbstractThe feasibility and acceptability of using the Bod Pod procedure to measure changes in body composition in 30 adolescent females admitted to an inpatient eating disorder unit was evaluated using written surveys, Bod Pod measurements obtained at admission and discharge, and medical records review. Participants rated the Bod Pod test as acceptable (100%; 30/30), comfortable (93%, 28/30), and they were willing to repeat the procedure (97%, 29/30). Ten participants did not complete the final Bod Pod: eight were discharged before a second measure could be obtained, one refused the test, and one left against medical advice. Three participants had undetectable readings at admission. Paired t-tests (n = 17) revealed a significant (p < 0.001) mean increase in fat mass (3.7 ± 2 kg), body fat percentage (6.6 ± 3.8%), and lean mass (1.4 ± 1.2 kg) from admission to discharge. The Bod Pod is a feasible and acceptable procedure to measure changes in body composition in adolescent females hospitalized with an eating disorder.

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to investigate longitudinal body mass and body composition changes in one professional rugby union team (n=123), (i) according to position [forwards (n=58) versus backs (n=65)], analysis of players with 6 consecutive seasons of DXA scans (n=21) and, (iii) to examine differences by playing status [academy and international], over 7 years. Players [mean age: 26.8 y, body mass index: 28.9+kg.m2] received DXA scans at fourtime points within each year. A modest (but non-significant) increase in mean total mass (0.8 kg) for professional players was reflected by increased lean mass and reduced body fat mass. At all-time points, forwards had a significantly greater total mass, lean mass and body fat percentage compared to backs (p<0.05). Academy players demonstrated increased total and lean mass and decreased body fat percentage over the first 3 years of senior rugby, although this was not significant. Senior and academy international players had greater lean mass and lower body fat percentage (p<0.05) than non-international counterparts. Despite modest increases in total mass; reflected by increased lean mass and reduced fat mass, no significant changes in body mass or body composition, irrespective of playing position were apparent over 7 years.

 Abstract: The aim of the study was to compare the players characteristics and physical fitness parameters according to playing positions and to identify the relation between body composition and physical fitness in professional soccer players at the beginning of the preparation period. Sixteen professional soccer players participated in this study. Body composition was evaluated by air displacement plethysmography instrumentation (BOD POD®) and physical fitness with specific tests: Running Anaerobic Sprint Test (RAST), Counter Moviment Jump (CMJ), Squat Jump (SJ) and Abalakov jump (ABK), Yo-yo Intermittent Recovery Level 1 (Yo-yo IR1), agility test and flexibility. Kruskal Wallis test demonstrated no significant difference in all estimated body composition, age, height and physical fitness parameters according to three playing positions (p < 0.05). We verified a significant negative correlation between body fat percentage and the performance of CMJ, SJ, ABK, peak, mean and minimum power (-.51 to -.87) and a significant positive correlation with the agility parameter (r = .85). Regarding to lean mass percentage, a significant positive correlation was found with performance of CMJ, SJ, ABK and peak, mean and minimum power (.51 to -.82) and significant negative correlation with agility parameter (r = -.85). Based on the results, we concluded that at the beginning of a pre-season a higher body fat percentage is associated with a negative influence in physical fitness, thus confirming that a greater amount of lean mass percentage is positively associated with the initial level of physical fitness of professional soccer players. Resumén: El objetivo del studio fue comparar las características de los jugadores y los parâmetros de aptitud física según las posiciones de juego e identificar la relación entre la composición corporal y la aptitud física em futebolistas profisionales al inicio del período de preparación. Dieciséis futebolistas profesionales participaron em este estudio. La composición corporal se evaluómediante instrumentación de plestimografia por desplazamiento de aire (BOD POD®) y aptitud física com pruebas específicas: capacidade anaeróbia (RAST), saltos verticales (CMJ, SJ y salto abalakov- ABK), resistência aeróbia, prueba de agilidade y flexibilidad. Kruskal Wallis no demostró diferencias significativas em todos los parâmetros estimados de composición corporal, edad, altura y condición física según las três posiciones de juego (p < 0.05). Verificamos uma correlación negativa significativa entre el porcentaje de grasa corporal y el rendimento de CMJ, SJ, ABK, potencia pico, media y mínima (-.51 to -.87) y uma correlación positiva significativa com el parâmetro de agilidade (r = .85). Em cuanto al porcentaje de massa magra, se encontro uma correlación positiva significativa com el rendimento de CMJ, SJ, ABK y potencia pico, media y mínima (.51 to -.82) y correlación negativa significativa com el parâmetro de agilidade (r = -.85). Com base em los resultados, concluimos que al inicio de una pré-temporada um mayor porcentaje de grassa corporal se associa com uma influencia negativa em la aptitud física, confirmando así que uma mayor porcentaje de massa magra se associa positivamente com el nível inicial de aptitud física de los futebolistas profesionales.

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to examine body composition of National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I female soccer players by position and season. One hundred seventy-five female athletes were categorized by positions of forward (n=47), midfielder (n=51), defender (n=57), and goalkeeper (n=20). A dual X-ray absorptiometry scan assessed percent body fat, total lean mass, total fat mass, arm and leg lean mass and fat mass, and visceral adipose tissue. Goalkeepers had significantly higher total, arm, and leg lean mass and fat mass compared to all other positions (p<0.05). For seasonal changes, body fat percentage was significantly higher in winter off-season (26.7%) compared to summer off-season (25.7%) and pre-season (25.8%; p<0.01) for all positions. Total and leg lean mass was significantly lower in winter off-season compared to all other seasons, and total lean mass was significantly higher in summer off-season than pre-season (p<0.01). Overall, goalkeepers were significantly different than all other positions. Body fat percentage increased and lean mass decreased in winter off-season indicating potential undesired changes in training and/or nutrition over the break whereas lean mass was the highest in summer off-season potentially reflecting the emphasis on resistance training and increased volume of training.

Background:Sarcopenia can be age associated (primary form) or secondary to chronic disorders, including rheumatic inflammatory disorders. Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a chronic autoimmune rheumatic disease characterized by widespread vasculopathy, progressive fibrosis of the skin and other internal organs, such as lung, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, cardiovascular system. Different from the other chronic rheumatic inflammatory disorders, sarcopenia has not been well evaluated in SSc patients.Objectives:To assess the body composition (BC) and to identify the frequency of sarcopenia (SP) in SSc patients.Methods:A total of 44 women who met the ACR/EULAR 2013 classification criteria were included. Mean age was 53,2 + 8,8 years. The median disease duration was 7,0 [4,0;12,0] years. 26 (59,1%) patients had limited and 18 (40,9%) - diffuse cutaneous subtype. Body composition was measured using Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of whole body. The appendicular lean mass index (ALMI) was calculated as the ratio of appendicular lean mass (ALM) to height (kg/m2). Handgrip measurement and chair stand test were performed. Physical function was measured with the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). SP was diagnosed in agreement with the 2019 revised consensus on definition and diagnosis of SP of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 (EWGSOP2): handgrip <16kg, chair stand test > 15 seconds for 5 rises, ALM <15 kg or ALMI <5.5 kg/m2. Severe SP was detected if the patient additionally had gait speed ≤0.8 m/s or SPPB ≤ 8-point score. Overfat was defined as body fat percentage >35%.Results:The median bone mineral content was 2.0 [1.8; 2.2] kg, total lean mass - 39,5 [35,7; 45,5] kg, ALM - 16,3 [14,5;19,4] kg, ALMI – 6,5 [5,7; 7,2] kg/m2, trunk fat mass – 13,5 [9,1; 16,7] kg and total fat mass - 26,6 [20,1; 34,5] kg. Body fat percentage was 38,8% [34,2; 42,7].9 (20,5%) women had low ALM and low ALMI, 6 (13,6%) – only low ALM. Healthy BC was found in 5 (11,3%), low ALM or low ALMI – in 7 (15,9%), overfat – in 24 (54,5%), low ALM + overfat – in 8 (18,2%) patients. We found no differences in BC between SSc patients with limited and diffuse cutaneous subtype.Low muscle strength (SP probable) was found in 21 (47,7%) women, meanwhile confirmed SP (low muscle strength and muscle mass) was diagnosed in 10 (22,7%) patients, among them 5 (11,4%) persons had severe SP. No significant difference in SP frequency among patients with limited and diffuse cutaneous SSc 4 (15,4%) and 6 (33,3%), respectively, (p=0,27). Osteoporosis was found in 6 (60%) patients with SP without differences in SSc subtypes.Conclusion:Healthy BC was found only in 11,3% cases, while overfat - in 72,7% and low ALM – in 34,1% SSc patients. SP was detected in 22.7% of women, among them in half of cases - severe SP, without any differences between the limited and diffuse subtypes of the disease.Disclosure of Interests:None declared

Purpose:To compare the body size and 3-compartment body composition between academy and senior professional rugby league players using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA).Methods:Academy (age 18.1 ± 1.1 y, n = 34) and senior (age 26.2 ± 4.6 y, n = 63) rugby league players received 1 total-body DXA scan. Height, body mass, and body-fat percentage alongside total and regional fat mass, lean mass, and bone mineral content (BMC) were compared. Independent t tests with Cohen d effect sizes and multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA), controlling for height and body mass, with partial eta-squared (η2) effect sizes, were used to compare total and regional body composition.Results:Senior players were taller (183.2 ± 5.8 vs 179.2 ± 5.7 cm, P = .001, d = 0.70) and heavier (96.5 ± 9.3 vs 86.5 ± 9.0 kg, P < .001, d = 1.09) with lower body-fat percentage (16.3 ± 3.7 vs 18.0 ± 3.7%, P = .032, d = 0.46) than academy players. MANCOVA identified significant overall main effects for total and regional body composition between academy and senior players. Senior players had lower total fat mass (P < .001, η 2 = 0.15), greater total lean mass (P < .001, η 2 = 0.14), and greater total BMC (P = .001, η 2 = 0.12) than academy players. For regional sites, academy players had significantly greater fat mass at the legs (P < .001, η 2 = 0.29) than senior players.Conclusions:The lower age, height, body mass, and BMC of academy players suggest that these players are still developing musculoskeletal characteristics. Gradual increases in lean mass and BMC while controlling fat mass is an important consideration for practitioners working with academy rugby league players, especially in the lower body.

The purpose of the current study was to determine whether expected changes in body weight via a 3-day low-carbohydrate (LC) diet will disrupt the reliability of air displacement plethysmography measurements via BOD POD. Twenty-four subjects recorded their typical diets for 3 days before BOD POD and 7-site skinfold analyses. Subjects were matched for lean body mass and divided into low-CHO (LC) and control (CON) groups. The LC group was given instruction intended to prevent more than 50 grams/day of carbohydrate consumption for 3 consecutive days, and the CON group replicated their previously recorded diet. Body composition measurements were repeated after dietary intervention. Test–retest reliability measures were significant (p < .01) and high for body fat percentage in both the LC and the CON groups (rs = .993 and .965, respectively). Likewise, skinfold analysis for body fat percentage reliability was high in both groups (rs = .996 and .997, respectively). There were significant differences between 1st and 2nd BOD POD measurements for body mass (72.9 ± 13.3 vs. 72.1 ± 13.0 kg [M ± SD]) and body volume (69.0 ± 12.7–68.1 ± 12.2 L) in the LC group (p < .05). However, there were no differences (p > .05) in BOD POD–determined body fat percentage, lean body mass, or fat mass between the 1st and 2nd trial in either group. Body composition measures via BOD POD and 7-site skinfolds remain reliable after 3 days of an LC diet despite significant decreases in body mass.

Abstract BackgroundThe determination of body composition is an important method to investigate obese patients and to evaluate the efficacy of medical interventions. Bioelectrical impedance-based methods are convenient, non-invasive and widely applied for this purpose, but need to be validated for their use in young obese patients.MethodsWe compiled data from three independent studies on different aspects of obesity in children and adolescents, measuring body composition with two bioelectrical impedance-based devices (TANITA and BIA). Further, for a small patient group additional data were collected with air displacement plethysmography (BOD POD) and DXA.ResultsBoth, the combined data of the entire study population of 123 patients (age: 6-18 years, BMI: 21-59 kg/m²) and the data of each individual study, showed that TANITA and BIA yield significantly different results on body composition, with TANITA overestimating body fat percentage and fat mass relative to BIA and underestimating fat-free mass (p < 0.001 for all three parameters). A Bland-Altman plot revealed that both methods show little agreement and produce clinically relevant differences for all three parameters. In addition, we detected gender-specific differences with both methods, body fat percentage being significantly lower (p < 0.01) and fat-free mass significantly higher (p < 0.001) in males than females. A comparison of bioelectrical impedance-based methods with BOD POD and DXA on a small patient group indicated no significant difference between methods.ConclusionsBoth bioelectrical impedance-based methods provide significantly different results on body composition in young obese patients and the data thus cannot be used interchangeably. Routine clinical practice may nonetheless use these devices but must adhere to a specific device for repetitive measurements to ascertain comparability of data.Trial registration: Study#2, Children`s KNEEs study, ClinicalTrials NCT02545764. Purpose: This study aimed to examine the eating disorder and physical activity in relation to type of sports and body fat percentages among national female athletes in Sarawak (N=150). Methodology: Eating Attitude Test (EAT-26) and Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) were employed to measure the eating disorders and physical activity. Anthropometric measurement and body composition (body fat percentage) were obtained. Results: Majority of the athletes were at low risk of an eating disorder (91.4%). Only a few indicated as high risk (8.6%). Moderately active athletes explained higher eating disorders in dieting, bulimia nervosa and food preoccupation. The non-weight sports athletes also exhibited higher eating disorders compared to its counterpart. Younger athletes were at higher eating disorder, but age was not significant in the subscales measured; except for food preoccupation where it was prominent in age 16 to 18 years old. Oral control did not associate with all the independent variables. Some relationships observed between body fat percentage and eating disorder and the subscales. Conclusion: There is a need for coaches’ attention and intervention on these athletes to prevent abnormal eating behavior among the young female athletes. This study highlights interesting findings where the less active athletes and the non-weight sports category athletes exhibit higher eating disorders issues.

Abstract Background: Essential amino acids (EAAs) promote the process of regulating muscle synthesis. Thus, whey protein that contains higher amounts of EAA can have a considerable effect on modifying muscle synthesis. However, there is insufficient evidence regarding the effect of soy and whey protein supplementation on body composition. Thus, we sought to perform a meta-analysis of published Randomized Clinical Trials that examined the effect of whey protein supplementation and soy protein supplementation on body composition (lean body mass, fat mass, body mass and body fat percentage) in adults. Methods: We searched PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, up to August 2020, for all relevant published articles assessing soy protein supplementation and whey protein supplementation on body composition parameters. We included all Randomized Clinical Trials that investigated the effect of whey protein supplementation and soy protein supplementation on body composition in adults. Pooled means and standard deviations (SD) were calculated using random-effects models. Subgroup analysis was applied to discern possible sources of heterogeneity. Results: After excluding non-relevant articles, 10 studies, with 596 participants, remained in this study. We found a significant increase in lean body mass after whey protein supplementation weighted mean difference (WMD: 0.91; 95% CI: 0.15, 1.67. P= 0.019). Subgroup analysis, for whey protein, indicated that there was a significant increase in lean body mass in individuals concomitant to exercise (WMD: 1.24; 95% CI: 0.47, 2.00; P= 0.001). There was a significant increase in lean body mass in individuals who received 12 or less weeks of whey protein (WMD: 1.91; 95% CI: 1.18, 2.63; P<0.0001). We observed no significant change between whey protein supplementation and body mass, fat mass, and body fat percentage. We found no significant change between soy protein supplementation and lean body mass, body mass, fat mass, and body fat percentage. Subgroup analysis for soy protein indicated there was a significant increase in lean body mass in individuals who supplemented for 12 or less weeks with soy protein (WMD: 1.48; 95% CI: 1.07, 1.89; P< 0.0001). Conclusion: Whey protein supplementation significantly improved body composition via increases in lean body mass, without influencing fat mass, body mass, and body fat percentage.

AbstractObjectiveTo examine the trends in obesity and adiposity measures, including body mass index, waist circumference, body fat percentage, and lean mass, by race or ethnicity among adults in the United States from 2011 to 2018.DesignPopulation based study.SettingNational Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2011-18.ParticipantsA nationally representative sample of US adults aged 20 years or older.Main outcome measuresWeight, height, and waist circumference among adults aged 20 years or older were measured by trained technicians using standardized protocols. Obesity was defined as body mass index of 30 or higher for non-Asians and 27.5 or higher for Asians. Abdominal obesity was defined as a waist circumference of 102 cm or larger for men and 88 cm or larger for women. Body fat percentage and lean mass were measured among adults aged 20-59 years by using dual energy x ray absorptiometry.ResultsThis study included 21 399 adults from NHANES 2011-18. Body mass index was measured for 21 093 adults, waist circumference for 20 080 adults, and body fat percentage for 10 864 adults. For the overall population, age adjusted prevalence of general obesity increased from 35.4% (95% confidence interval 32.5% to 38.3%) in 2011-12 to 43.4% (39.8% to 47.0%) in 2017-18 (P for trend<0.001), and age adjusted prevalence of abdominal obesity increased from 54.5% (51.2% to 57.8%) in 2011-12 to 59.1% (55.6% to 62.7%) in 2017-18 (P for trend=0.02). Age adjusted mean body mass index increased from 28.7 (28.2 to 29.1) in 2011-12 to 29.8 (29.2 to 30.4) in 2017-18 (P for trend=0.001), and age adjusted mean waist circumference increased from 98.4 cm (97.4 to 99.5 cm) in 2011-12 to 100.5 cm (98.9 to 102.1 cm) in 2017-18 (P for trend=0.01). Significant increases were observed in body mass index and waist circumference among the Hispanic, non-Hispanic white, and non-Hispanic Asian groups (all P for trend<0.05), but not for the non-Hispanic black group. For body fat percentage, a significant increase was observed among non-Hispanic Asians (30.6%, 29.8% to 31.4% in 2011-12; 32.7%, 32.0% to 33.4% in 2017-18; P for trend=0.001), but not among other racial or ethnic groups. The age adjusted mean lean mass decreased in the non-Hispanic black group and increased in the non-Hispanic Asian group, but no statistically significant changes were found in other racial or ethnic groups.ConclusionsAmong US adults, an increasing trend was found in obesity and adiposity measures from 2011 to 2018, although disparities exist among racial or ethnic groups.
