Recent Work on Nietzsche’s Moral Psychology and Ethics

Abstract Each of these books presents itself as rescuing Nietzsche from misinterpretation. Thus, Leiter wants to prevent Nietzsche from being “moralized” (i. e., read in a way that makes him sound like a contemporary moral philosopher); Stern wants to prevent Nietzsche from being iron-manned (i. e., read in a way that assumes his arguments must be invulnerable to critique); Alfano wants to correct what he sees as a tendency to misrepresent Nietzsche’s central concerns; and Ridley claims writers have been misled when thinking about Nietzsche on action. Alfano’s book is, to my mind, the most successful at achieving its stated aims; while I point out some potential oversights and some areas that could benefit from further development, Alfano’s book is both novel and important. Leiter’s book is clearly written and presents the arguments in an admirably forthright manner, but some of its conclusions are vitiated by lapses and mischaracterizations. Stern gets Nietzsche’s basic view right, but does not probe it very deeply and is too quick to present Nietzsche as confused; I see the confusions as emanating less from Nietzsche’s texts and more from Stern’s reading of them. Ridley’s book is original and provocative, but I find the central claim - that Nietzsche endorses an expressive account of action - ultimately unconvincing.

AbstractThe ultimate aim of this essay is to suggest that conscience is a very important part of human psychology and of our moral point of view, not something that can be dismissed as merely ‘a part of Christian theology’. The essay begins with discussions of what might be regarded as the two most influential functional models of conscience, the classical Christian account of conscience and the Freudian account of conscience. Then, using some insights from these models, and from some comparatively recent work in psychology and especially psychiatry, the author argues for a quite different model of conscience that might be called the personal integrity account of conscience.

This paper examines the interpretation of erôs in Plato’s Symposium developed by Vasilis Politis in his paper, “The Volatility of Erôs.” The paper first argues that some of the central claims made by Politis are untenable. It then suggests that there is, nevertheless, an important distinction that Politis points to between the way in which erôs is directed specifically at beauty and the way in which desires for the good are directed specifically at goodness. An attempt is made to put this distinction on a new footing incorporating some recent work on Plato’s moral psychology.

To what extent is morality based on reason? To answer this question, we need to clarify which aspect of morality is under investigation, and which notion of reason is in play. Recent work in moral psychology has attempted to debunk central aspects of moral judgment and metaethical judgment. However, rational processes might play a vital role in the acquisition of moral systems. This chapter sets out the basic idea of processes and suggests that one kind of process—statistical learning—is especially significant for moral learning. Statistical learning processes are both empiricist, in that they are domain-general processes, and they are rational, in that they conform to the rules of probability theory. Thus they are poised to provide alternatives to both nativist and sentimentalist accounts of our moral psychology.

AbstractWhat is the proper task of Kantian ethical theory? This paper seeks to answer this question with reference to Kant's reply to Christian Garve in Section I of his 1793 essay on Theory and Practice. Kant reasserts the distinctness and natural authority of our consciousness of the moral law. Every mature human being is a moral professional—even philosophers like Garve, if only they forget about their ill-conceived ethical systems and listen to the voice of pure practical reason. Normative theory, Kant argues, cannot be refuted with reference to alleged experience. It is the proper task of the moral philosopher to emphasize this fact. The paper also discusses Kant's attempts to clarify his moral psychology, philosophy of value and conception of the highest good in the course of replying to Garve's challenge.

Rechargeable multivalent ion batteries are promising tools to complement current lithium-ion batteries for a future of diverse energy storage needs. Divalent Mg and Ca are attractive candidates for their high crustal abundance, high volumetric anode capacity, and infrequent dendrite formation during electrochemical cycling. Electrolyte research is central to these efforts and continually improves coulombic efficiencies towards the ideal 100%. This mini-review discusses recent work towards fundamental understandings that push these chemistries towards practical use. Piecing together compatible cathode and electrolytes for a complete practical multivalent ion battery lacks a cohesive method for further development and refinement. Understanding liquid solvation, utilizing rational design, and probing interfacial interactions are focal points that govern electrolyte performance. The combination of these areas will be critical for meaningful development.

Recent work has improved the understanding of social structures in theological discourse, but ambiguity persists with respect to structures of sin. Here, a revised definition of structural sin reconnects this concept with its theological roots, adding clarity to the nature of structural sin and strengthening the moral weight of the term. Parallels with fMRI research in the field of moral psychology then refine the existing account of the operation of structural sin. Together, these insights aid in the identification of structures of sin and improve efforts to combat their influence.

The following paper forms a continuation of a recent work by Prandtl (I) “On the Calculation of Boundary Layers.” It deals with the problem of developing in detail the method, proposed in that paper, for continuing a given velocity profile in a laminar boundary layer when the pressure distribution is given; the method is tried out in practice by numerical evaluation of an example.

AbstractThrough an immanent critique of Peter McLaren's recent work, the author demonstrates the strengths and weaknesses of critical-revolutionary paedagogy. This review reveals internal lacks, gaps, and contradictions emerging from within the three main dimensions of McLaren's overarching manifesto including passion, reason, and revolution. Although McLaren is an important voice in linking Marxist political and cultural theory to the practice of education, his work ultimately cannot complete its own project and as such needs further development.
