AbstractThere is a well-documented tension in many nonprofits – particularly those seeking government contracts or working in areas that compete with the private sector – between the institutional logics of business-market and nonprofit-mission. This paper presents a case study of a century old Swedish nonprofit. It suggests that in the presence of competing hybrid logics, organizational actors respond according to the logic to which they are drawn ideologically. Logic salience as a concept is proposed and its three categories are identified to delineate which type and degree of salience individuals hold towards market logic, mission logic, or towards both. The findings indicate that logic salience can enable or constrain any of the hybrid goals and can provide some explanation as to how or why certain organizational responses that do not represent the collective come about as organizations are wedged between competing logics. Considering the increasing role of nonprofits in the delivery of public services, relevance to research and policy is also highlighted.

The provision of water services has traditionally been considered a responsibility of the state. During the late 1980s, the private sector emerged as a key actor in the provision of public services. Mexico City was no exception to this trend and public authorities awarded service contracts to four private consortia in 1993. Through consideration of this case study, two main questions arise: First, why do public authorities establish partnerships with the private sector? Second, what are the implications of these partnerships for water governance? This article focuses, on the one hand, on the conceptual debate of water as a public and/or private good, while identifying new trends and strategies carried out by private operators. On the other hand, it analyzes the role of the state and its relationships with other actors through a governance model characterized by partnerships and multilevel networks.Spanish La provisión del servicio del agua ha sido tradicionalmente considerada como una responsabilidad del Estado. A finales de la década de 1980, el sector privado emerge como un actor clave en el suministro de servicios públicos. La ciudad de México no escapa a esta tendencia y en 1993 las autoridades públicas firman contratos de servicios con cuatro consorcios privados. À travers cette étude de cas, nous nous interrogerons sur deux aspects : pourquoi les autorités publiques établissentelles des partenariats avec le secteur privé ? Quelles sont les implications de ces partenariats sur la gouvernance de l'eau ? Cet article s'intéresse, d'une part, au débat conceptuel sur l'eau en tant que bien public et/ou privé, en identifiant les tendances nouvelles et les stratégies menées par les opérateurs privés. D'autre part y sont analysés le rôle de l'État et ses relations avec d'autres acteurs à travers un modèle de gouvernance, défini en termes de partenariats, et des réseaux multi-niveaux.

Local governments in the Slovak Republic are important in public administration and form an important part of the public sector, as they provide various public services. Until 1990, all public services were provided only by the state. The reform of public administration began in 1990 with the decentralization of competencies. Several competencies were transferred to local governments from the state, and thus municipalities began to provide public services that the state previously provided. Registry offices were the first to be acquired by local governments from the state. This study aimed to characterize the transfer of competencies and their financing from state administration to local government using the example of registry offices in the Slovak Republic. In the paper, we evaluated the financing of this competency from 2007 to 2018 at the level of individual regions of the Slovak Republic. The results of the analysis and testing of hypotheses indicated that a higher number of inhabitants in individual regions did not affect the number of actions at these offices, despite the fact that the main role of the registry office is to keep registry books, in which events, such as births, weddings, and deaths, are registered.

Corruption is always a big problem exist in every country. Today, the corruption is not only in the public sector but also in the private sector. Each State has used many ways to prevent and fight this crime. The 4th Industrial Revolution (4IE) brings many innovative solutions for modern life. Especially, e-Government is a great achievement of the 4IE. Base on the e-Government, the policies and regulations of States are transparent. It plays an important role to prevent and fight corruption more effectively. In this paper, the author will analyze the case study of Vietnam on fighting corruption base on the information technology and the outcome of applying e-Government on preventing and fighting corruption in both public sector and private sector. From this result of research, the author will recommend some solutions to improve the corruption status in Vietnam on the next period.

PurposeThis study investigates state institutions' influence on corporate accountability and control practices in a rural African context. Exploring the different rationales behind state existence in the context of sugar production in Egypt, this work clarifies how accountability is practised differently in the case of the high centrality of state logics in the business sector.Design/methodology/approachTheoretically, the study draws insights from the institutional logics perspective. Following the case study approach, data are collected through interviews, observations and documents.FindingsThe study found that state institutions can play a supportive rather than a mere constraining role in the management, accountability and control processes. Notably, it clarified how state-related institutions were highly central and influential in a way that enabled them to curb the (negative) influences of the community and business institutions. In this context, it is social – rather than functional – accountability which emerges as the central control practice to achieve answerability and enforcement.Originality/valueThus, this study's reported findings confirm the role of institutional (political) logics as supportive in society.

This article underlines the specificities of public–private mergers by presenting the interactions between the institutional logics at stake and the cultural dynamics during the integration process of a public–private merger. The article presents a longitudinal case study of a public–private merger of two listed French companies over two years. Our study completes and enriches Schultz’s model by showing its dynamic nature and highlighting the crucial role of the state as a trigger for the interactions between institutional logics and cultural dynamics. Points for practitioners By highlighting the interactions between cultural dynamics and institutional logics, we trace how cultural dynamics influence the decision-making process and how institutional logics influence integration by becoming dominant. We demonstrate how the state influences the interactions between these forces during the integration process.

PurposeThis article aims to increase the understanding of the role of individual actors and arenas in dealing with multiple institutional logics in family firms.Design/methodology/approachThis study follows a case-study approach of two family-owned newspaper companies. Based on interviews and secondary sources, the empirical material was analysed focussing on three institutional logics, that is, family logic, management logic and journalistic logic.FindingsFirst, the authors show how and in which arenas competing logics are balanced in family-owned newspaper companies. Second, the authors highlight that family owners are central actors in the process of balancing different institutional logics. Further, they analyse how family members can become hybrid owner-managers, meaning that they have access to all institutional logics and become central actors in the balancing process.Originality/valueThe authors reveal how multiple institutional logics are balanced in family firms by including formal actors and arenas as additional lenses. Therefore, owning family members, especially hybrid owner-managers, are the best-suited individual actors to balance competing logics. Hybrid owner-managers are members of the owner families who are also skilled in one or several professions.

Organizations have diverse options to improve their performance. With the advances in ICT, several organizations attempt a technology-based solution by digitizing and automation. Indeed, to begin with, it is appropriate, but there are societal challenges. The theories available in the literature explain the reasons for certain societal challenges and actions, but there is also a constant expansion of the theories. This paper adds to the expansion by considering ICT innovations such as digitalization. The social, political, cultural, and economic entities in which organizations operate influence and get influenced by organizational responses. There are connections between organizations and entities; we can refer to these as embeddedness. The purpose of this paper is in identifying a framework and the types of embeddedness. The phenomenon, organizational embeddedness, requires observing it in its setting and is performed using a case study methodology. E-Governance interacts with various entities and provides diverse analytic and heuristic views; hence the author uses E-Governance cases from India. The developed framework assists organizations in providing inputs towards improving their internal complements. In doing so, organizations can not only better respond to societal challenges but also enable other entities in the environment to coevolve.

Purpose This paper aims to highlight the importance of social marketing at the midstream (meso) level as a key component of a proposed model for co-creating public services. The model demonstrates how supportive relationships and conversations within and between service organisations, front-line service staff, social networks and clients are essential for the effective co-creation of health and welfare services and social marketing interventions. Design/methodology/approach This is a conceptual paper that uses network and services theory and a case study to show how the midstream social marketing approach and service co-creation can be applied in practice and how these concepts relate to upstream and downstream social marketing. Findings The case study demonstrates the powerful role of social networks, staff–client relationships and conversations in the co-creation of effective services and the improvement in communications, trust and understanding between service providers and the community. Practical implications The paper shows how service providers and social marketers can achieve co-created, customer-oriented services/interventions through the development of congruent, empathetic narratives, relationships and conversations. The case study demonstrates how this can be achieved in practice through staff training, the identification of “community communicators” and value-based targeting and communications. Originality/value The integration of conversations, relationships, values, services and midstream social marketing into a model for co-creation offers a valuable tool for social marketing and health/welfare service professionals.
