W ostatnich latach rynek miodów importowanych rozwija się intensywnie, a ze względu na atrakcyjną cenę produkty importowane stanowią konkurencję dla miodów krajowych. W niniejszej pracy przeprowadzono ocenę jakości miodów importowanych dostępnych w lokalnych supermarketach na podstawie parametrów jakości miodu określonych w obowiązujących przepisach. Ponadto zbadano ich właściwości przeciwutleniające w porównaniu z miodami krajowymi. Badaniem objęto miody: akacjowy (3), lipowy (4), gryczany (4), wielokwiatowy (5), spadziowy (4). W zakresie analizowanych parametrów fizykochemicznych odstępstwa od wymagań jakości handlowej miodów obowiązujących w odpowiednich przepisach stwierdzono wyłącznie w odniesieniu do zawartości wody, 5-hydroksymetylofurfuralu (HMF) i liczby diastazowej, odpowiednio w: 15, 35 i 45 % próbek. Zawartość związków polifenolowych była dodatnio skorelowana z aktywnością przeciwutleniającą miodów, mierzoną jako zdolność do redukcji jonów żelaza (Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power), zdolnością neutralizacji rodników DPPH, (Radical Scavenging Activity) oraz barwą miodu (odpowiednio: r = 0,847, 0,367 oraz 0,975). Badania wskazują, że miody importowane stanowią naturalny środek słodzący o znacznie niższej aktywności biologicznej w porównaniu z miodami produkowanymi na Podkarpaciu, które były przedmiotem wcześniejszych badań.

Nine Chinese herbs including Artemisiae Argyi, Peristrophe baphica, Paederia scandense, Patrinia villosa, Cassia mimosoides, Gynostemma Pentaphyllum, Rabdosin serra, Mesona chinensis and Houttuynia cordata are commonly used in Hakka area. We investigated the antioxidant activities of 95% ethanol extracts from whole plants of the nine Chinese herbs by two in vitro assays, namely DPPH radical-scavenging activity and ferric reducing/antioxidant power(FRAP) assay. The contents of total flavonoids and total phenols were measured by aluminum chloride and Folin-Ciocalteu colorimetric assays, respectively, and their correlations with DPPH radical-scavenging effect and ferric reducing/ antioxidant power (FRAP) were analyzed. The extracts were found to have different levels of antioxidant activity in the systems tested. Cassia mimosoides had the highest value of antioxidant activity based on DPPH radical-scavenging activity and ferric reducing power and the highest contents of total flavonoids and total phenols, followed by Rabdosin serra. Ferric reducing/ antioxidant power (FRAP) was shown to provide higher association with the contents of total flavonoids and total phenols than DPPH radical-scavenging activity. Thus, we suggest that Cassia mimosoides and Rabdosin serra could be used as potential sources of safe dietary supplement or antioxidant of natural origin to promote human health.

Background: All over the world, the quality of commercial honeys varies greatly depending on many factors. Hence, this study was conducted to evaluate the physicochemical and antioxidant properties of Iranian commercial honeys to confirm their nutritional and economical quality. Methods: Fifty three honey samples from six different types, including alfalfa, milkvetch, lotus, thyme, coriander and multifloral honeys, were analyzed for pH, free acidity, electrical conductivity, Ash, moisture, hydroxymethylfurfural, reducing sugars, glucose, fructose, proline, color, total phenolic content, ferric reducing antioxidant power and DPPH radical-scavenging activity. Results: : In total, physicochemical properties of different honey types were in the range of 4.3 ± 0.49 to 5.2 ± 0.49 for pH, 13.81 ± 2.5 to 26.22 ± 2.8 for free acidity (meq/kg), 15.95 ± 0.45 to 17.98 ± 0.97 for moisture (%), 282.2 ± 50.3 to 578 ± 47 for electrical conductivity (µS/cm), 0.14 ± 0.04 to 0.38 ± 0.03 for ash (g/100 g), 68.66 ± 4.3 to 72.09 ± 6.4 for reducing sugars (g/100 g), 34.67 ± 2.6 to 36.7 ± 2.2 for glucose (g/100 g), 31.9 ± 4.75 to 37.04 ± 4.0 for fructose (g/100 g), 6.1 ± 5.8 to 22.85 ± 10.9 for hydroxymethylfurfural (mg/kg), 426.7 ± 53.91 to 593.9 ± 108.6 for proline (mg/kg), 46.27 ± 4.3 to 96.04 ± 14.4 for color (mm) and 245.4 ± 48.45 to 573.9 ± 69.3 for total phenolic (mg/kg) content. In terms of antioxidant capacity, lotus and thyme honeys were preferable, while the highest level of DPPH radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing antioxidant power were observed in lotus and thyme honeys. Conclusion: These results confirmed that the Iranian commercial honeys meet the quality standards established by national and international regulatory agencies.

The present study aimed to evaluate the potential of standardized methanolic extracts from seven Ficus deltoidea varieties in inhibiting the formation of AGEs, protein oxidation, and their antioxidant effects. The antiglycation activity was analyzed based on the inhibition of AGEs, fructosamine, and thiol groups level followed by the inhibition of protein carbonyl formation. The antioxidant activity (DPPH radical scavenging activity and reducing power assay) and total phenolic contents were evaluated. After 28 days of induction, all varieties of Ficus deltoidea extracts significantly restrained the formation of fluorescence AGEs by 4.55–5.14 fold. The extracts also reduced the fructosamine levels by 47.0–86.5%, increased the thiol group levels by 64.3–83.7%, and inhibited the formation of protein carbonyl by 1.36–1.76 fold. DPPH radical scavenging activity showed an IC50 value of 66.81–288.04 μg/ml and reducing power activity depicted at 0.02–0.24 μg/ml. The extent of phenolic compounds present in the extracts ranged from 70.90 to 299.78 mg·GAE/g. Apart from that, correlation studies between the activities were observed. This study revealed that seven varieties of Ficus deltoidea have the potential to inhibit AGEs formation and possess antioxidant activity that might be attributed to the presence of phenolic compounds.

The UV-Vis absorption spectrum of kaempferol and DPPH was investigated, the optimum determination wavelength and reaction time for determining the DPPH radical scavenging activity of kaempferol was 517 nm and 30 min, respectively. Kaempferol exhibited strong DPPH radical scavenging activity with a IC50 value of 0.004349 mg·mL-1, which is smaller than that of rutin, indicating that kaempferol has a stronger antioxidant activity than rutin.

Objectives:  Medicinal plants, either as an extract, pure compound or as a derivative, offer limitless opportunities for the discovery of new drugs. Sudan is a very rich source of medicinal plants which are used in the treatment of a wide range of diseases. Aloe sinkatana, has great potential to be developed as drug by pharmaceutical industries. The present study is undertaken to investigate the antioxidant potential of Aloe sinkatana by DPPH radical scavenging activity. In addition, the study also performed to explore the possibility of using HPLC-MS technique for the determination and analysis of Aloe sinkatana. Methods:  The extracts of Aloe sinkatana were analyzed for antioxidant activity by using DPPH free radical scavenging activity. The results indicated that the extracts showed a high effective free radical scavenging in the DPPH assay, also these extracts exhibited a noticeable antioxidant effect at low concentrations. Results:  During in vitro evaluation the antioxidant potential of methanolic extract was the highest, followed by aqueous extract  in DPPH radical scavenging activity. So the methanolic extract of the plant, exhibited a great antioxidant effect at 50 μg/ml which may be attributed to high phenolic content. Therefore, methanolic extract to be a more active radical scavenger than aqueous extract. The HPLC-MS analysis had shown the methanolic extract of Aloe sinkatana to be rich in the major anthraquinones and their glucosides, which revealed 9 compounds, and also UV spectroscopy detected the presence of two flavonoids. Conclusion:  The results indicated that the extracts of Aloe sinkatana  is a potential source of natural antioxidants or nutraceuticals with potential application to reduce oxidative stress with consequent health benefits. Due to stronger antioxidant potential and phytochemical composition, Aloe sinkatana could be proved as a valuable prospect in pharmaceutical formulations by taking part in the antioxidant defense system against generation of free radicals. Abstract Objectives This study aimed to examine the antioxidant activity and antiinflammatory effects of ethanol extract of Polygonum senticosum (EPS) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. Methods Antioxidant activity of EPS was assessed by radical-scavenging effects on ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radicals. Proinflammatory markers produced by LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages were quantified to assess the antiinflammatory activity of EPS. Results Our results showed that EPS significantly increased FRAP and DPPH radical-scavenging activity. Additionally, EPS reduced LPS-induced proinflammatory mediators, such as nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), along with proinflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-1β, without significant cytotoxicity. EPS significantly downregulated the expression of inducible NO synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), TNF-α, and IL-1β in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. Positive correlations were noted between FRAP and DPPH radical-scavenging activity and antiinflammatory capacity. Conclusions Our results indicate that EPS downregulates the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators such as NO, PGE2, and cytokines (IL-1β and TNF-α) in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. Further research is needed for its use as a treatment for inflammation and related diseases.
