The rapid evolution of environmental (e)DNA methods has resulted in knowledge gaps in smaller, yet critical details like proper use of negative controls to detect contamination. Detecting contamination is vital for confident use of eDNA results in decision-making. We conducted two literature reviews to summarize (a) the types of quality assurance measures taken to detect contamination of eDNA samples from aquatic environments, (b) the occurrence, frequency and attribution (i.e., putative sources) of unexpected amplification in these quality assurance samples, and (c) how results were interpreted when contamination occurred. In the first literature review, we reviewed 156 papers and found that 91% of targeted and 73% of metabarcoding eDNA studies reported inclusion of negative controls within their workflows. However, a large percentage of targeted (49%) and metabarcoding (80%) studies only reported negative controls for laboratory procedures, so results were potentially blind to field contamination. Many of the 156 studies did not provide critical methodological information and amplification results of negative controls. In our second literature review, we reviewed 695 papers and found that 30 targeted and 32 metabarcoding eDNA studies reported amplification of negative controls. This amplification occurred at similar proportions for field and lab workflow steps in targeted and metabarcoding studies. These studies most frequently used amplified negative controls to delimit a detection threshold above which is considered significant or provided rationale for why the unexpected amplifications did not affect results. In summary, we found that there has been minimal convergence over time on negative control implementation, methods, and interpretation, which suggests that increased rigor in these smaller, yet critical details remains an outstanding need. We conclude our review by highlighting several studies that have developed especially effective quality assurance, control and mitigation methods.

Background: Premature failures of wheelchairs in less-resourced environments (LREs) may be because of shortcomings in product regulation and quality standards. The standards published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) specify wheelchair tests for durability, safety and performance, but their applicability to products used in the rugged conditions of LREs is unclear. Because of this, wheelchair-related guidelines published by the World Health Organization recommended developing more rigorous durability tests for wheelchairs.Objectives: This study was performed to identify the additional tests needed for LREs.Methods: First, a literature review of the development of ISO test standards, wheelchair standards testing studies and wheelchair evaluations in LREs was performed. Second, expert advice from members of the Standards Working Group of the International Society of Wheelchair Professionals (ISWP) was compiled and reviewed.Results: A total of 35 articles were included in the literature review. Participation from LREs was not observed in the ISO standards development. As per wheelchair testing study evidence, wheelchair models delivered in LREs did not meet the minimum standards requirement. Multiple part failures and repairs were observed with reviewed field evaluation studies. ISWP experts noted that several testing factors responsible for premature failures with wheelchair parts are not included in the standards and accordingly provided advice for additional test development.Conclusion: The study findings indicate the need to develop a wide range of tests, with specific tests for measuring corrosion resistance of the entire wheelchair, rolling resistance of castors and rear wheels, and durability of whole wheelchair and castor assemblies.

Introduction:Decision-making about replacement or modification of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) must be patient-centered and clinically appropriate. We engaged both patients and health care professionals in a multi-method approach in order to recommend structures and processes that facilitate informed and shared decision-making.Methods:A systematic literature review (2000 to 2017) was performed focusing on the patient's perspective and the optimal organization of structures and processes for decision-making. A province-wide field evaluation based on medical chart review was carried out to provide ‘real world’ evidence in Québec's six ICD implanting centers (1 July to 31 December, 2016; N = 418). Patients and health care professionals reviewed the findings of the review and field evaluation, and deliberated recommendations in an anonymous manner by electronic mail. A joint meeting focused on proposed recommendations concerning shared decision-making.Results:The patients provided feedback on the literature review based on their ICD experience, and highlighted the need for better and more interactive decision aids, clinical information and time, and a private space for sensitive discussions. The field evaluation underlined the variability of treatment choices at the time of replacement and that more than one in ten patients had undergone ICD deactivation. Proposed recommendations focus on multi-disciplinary, integrated follow-up of patients and outline best practice for incorporating patient wishes and life objectives when discussing treatment options. The multi-round consultation process allowed both patients and professionals to co-construct recommendations with our evaluation team.Conclusions:This multi-method approach enriched our interpretation of literature and ‘real world’ data and facilitated identification and prioritization of important themes. Partnership with both patients and clinicians added a new and energizing dynamic to our evaluation and recommendation processes. We acknowledge the contribution of the members of the patient committee and the clinical experts committee.

Polymer flooding is a well-established technique aimed at improved recovery factors from oilfields. Among the important parameters affecting the feasibility of a large deployment, polymer retention is one of the most critical since it directly impacts the oil bank delay and therefore the final economics of the project. This paper describes the work performed for the East-Messoyakhskoe oilfield located in Northern Siberia (Russia). A literature review was first performed to select the most appropriate methodology to assess polymer retention in unconsolidated cores at residual oil saturation. 4 polyacrylamide polymers were selected with molecular weights between 7 and 18 M Da and sulfonated monomer (ATBS) content between 0 and 5% molar. An improved 2-fronts dynamic retention method along with total organic carbon—total nitrogen analyzers were used for concentration measurement. Retention values vary between 93 and 444 The sentence could be rephrased μg/g, with the lowest given by the polymers containing ATBS, corroborating other publications on the topic. This paper also summarizes the main learnings gathered during the adaptation of laboratory procedures and paves the way for a faster and more efficient retention estimation for unconsolidated reservoirs.

Computerized auditory training (CAT) is a convenient, low-cost approach to improving communication of individuals with hearing loss or other communicative disorders. A number of CAT programs are being marketed to patients and audiologists. The present literature review is an examination of evidence for the effectiveness of CAT in improving speech perception in adults with hearing impairments. Six current CAT programs, used in 9 published studies, were reviewed. In all 9 studies, some benefit of CAT for speech perception was demonstrated. Although these results are encouraging, the overall quality of available evidence remains low, and many programs currently on the market have not yet been evaluated. Thus, caution is needed when selecting CAT programs for specific patients. It is hoped that future researchers will (a) examine a greater number of CAT programs using more rigorous experimental designs, (b) determine which program features and training regimens are most effective, and (c) indicate which patients may benefit from CAT the most.

AbstractPurpose: The purpose of this article is to inform speech-language pathologists in the schools about issues related to the care of children with traumatic brain injury.Method: Literature review of characteristics, outcomes and issues related to the needs serving children.Results: Due to acquired changes in cognition, children with traumatic brain injury have unique needs in a school setting.Conclusions: Speech-Language Pathologists in the school can take a leadership role with taking care of children after a traumatic brain injury and coordination of medical and educational information.
