This essay is an autoethnographic account of the ways Black cultural performance, specifically Black social dance, works to produce and maintain Black cultural space in predominantly white spaces. I consider the significance of the “City Boy Wit It” song and dance as an expression of Black identity that marks Blackness in Tampa, FL. By framing my personal experiences through a discussion of Black identity and Black space, I critically examine larger issues of Black performativity and Black cultural spaces.

In recent years cultural and public spaces developing in Russia are involved in the formation of a comfortable environment for the city residents and attracting new tourist flows. The role of the capital of XXIX World Winter Universiade complicates the task of providing attractiveness of Krasnoyarsk for potential tourists. This requires creation of an attractive tourist offer and the identifica- tion of tourism potential for existing cultural organizations and other leisure facilities. Cultural space Kamenka founded in 2013 recently has gained popularity among the population of Krasnoyarsk and other districts of the Krasnoyarsk Krai and Siberian Federal District as a leisure attraction. In this regard, it has the prospects of transformation into a tourist destination. Accordingly, the study of the perspective of the Kamenka’s transformation into a tourist destination is of great practical importance, and it can also help to find a methodological tool for developing marketing strategies that ensure the success of this process. The authors reveal the segment of the Kamenka target market, presented by the potential tourists of the regional tourist services markets, and identify the specificity of the tourist potential of the commodity offer and the reasonably local centered scenario of Kamenka development as a tourist destination. Cultural and educational spaces of Russia and the cultural space Kamenka as innovative destinations use modern promotion technologies based on Internet technologies, effectiveness of which has been evaluated according to the D. Khaldilov's methodology of the social networks effectiveness assessing, adapted to cultural spaces. On this basis the authors give the proposals to improve social networks, which can ensure Kamenka’s successful transformation into the tourist destination, helping the city of Krasnoyarsk to become attractive for tourists, not only while holding the Universiade, but also after it. In the post-Soviet era, the onomastic space of Irkutsk noticeably changed. First, changes are found in ergonymy. The transition of the Russian economy to market relations caused the emergence of many new commercial enterprises, which receive their own names. The process of ergonymy development is seriously affected by international population migration. Most migrants work in the service sector and often give their enterprises names associated with their homeland or reflecting national peculiarities. In the linguistic and cultural space of the city, more and more ethnic names appear. These names are included in the system of urban spatial coordinates, significantly changing the composition of ergonyms. ОБСУЖДЕНИЕ:

The relationship between the police and African Americans has had a contentious history for decades. To explore this topic further, we interviewed 77 African Americans in the City of Durham, NC, about the declining relationship between their community and the police. We find that African Americans’ perceptions of the police are nuanced and complicated by personal experiences, vicarious experiences of relatives and friends, and news from social media and television regarding policing practices and treatment, including police harassment and/or brutality. We characterize these direct and vicarious experiences as the transmission of trauma. Even for the proportion of African Americans who had positive perceptions and interactions with the police, their views of the police seemed to be further complicated by broader concerns of discriminatory treatment. We proffer solutions to improve the relationship between the police and African Americans. The implications of our findings for future research are also discussed.

In this article, Silvija Jestrovic introduces the notion of spatial inter-performativity to discuss theatre's relationship to actual political and cultural spaces. Focusing on the Berlin of the 1920s in performances of Brecht and Piscator, then on a street procession of the Générik Vapeur troupe that took place in Belgrade in 1994, she examines how theatrical and political spaces refer to and transform one another. Silvija Jestrovic was a SSHRC postdoctoral fellow at York University in Toronto, and has recently taken up an appointment in the School of Theatre Studies at the University of Warwick. She is currently working on a book-length project entitled Avant-Garde and the City.

Рассмотрен вопрос о сущности социокультурного пространства и его пересечении с экономическим пространством города. Показано, что наиболее эффективная организация пространственного взаимодействия данных пространств во многом является географической задачей. Предлагается метод изучения социальных практик населения для локализации точек и линий взаимодействия социокультурной и экономической сфер. Рассмотрены практики, в ходе которых создаются социокультурные ценности, положительно влияющие на экономическое пространство города. Обсуждается проблема влияния пешеходных пространств (наиболее насыщенных практиками) на формирование имиджа города. The question of the essence of the socio-cultural space and its intersection with the economic space of the city is considered. It is shown that the most effective organization of the spatial interaction of these spaces is in many ways a geographic task. A method is proposed for studying the social practices of the population to localize points and lines of interaction between the socio-cultural and economic spheres. The practice is considered in the course of which socio-cultural values are created that have a positive effect on the economic space of the city. The problem of the influence of pedestrian spaces (the most saturated with practices) on the formation of the city's image is discussed.

This article is entitled Becoming Lesbians: A Symbolic Interactionism Study of Lesbian Identity (Case Study in the City of Surabaya). Researchers focus on lesbian individuals not on the lesbian community. The problem raised by the researcher is how the whole process of choosing someone to be a lesbian and the symbols used for interaction with other lesbians. The purpose of this study is to know how a person chooses his life as a lesbian and to find out the symbols used to interact with lesbians. The method used is a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. In this study informants numbered four people and all four occupy their respective roles in lesbians. From the results of this study there are several reasons why someone chooses to become a lesbian: social profiles, her-story, lesbian firts time, what changes, reactions and what next. From these concepts, the conclusion is that family background does not influence a person to become a lesbian, but rather from personal experiences in the past or experiences with social relations.

Research on China’s internal migration has mostly focused on moving rather than staying. Urban destinations of migrants are often seen as discrete points of economic opportunity in space, exerting a magnetic force on the rural population from the countryside. But after commencing their urban lives, rural migrants start to perceive their host cities and towns as places that entail value and meaning, which may encourage them to settle. This paper examines how the settlement intentions of rural migrants vary across urban destinations and socioeconomic backgrounds. A questionnaire survey dataset of 10,896 rural migrants in cities of different tiers in Jiangsu Province is used to unravel the factors that predict rural migrants’ settlement intentions. In addition, interviews with rural migrants and their family members are examined to explore the personal experiences and subjective perceptions that may contribute to their inclinations to settle in the city. Results indicate that the factors which encourage rural migrants to settle differ significantly from those which drive them to migrate. Economic and social resources and a resultant sense of (in)security are the prominent factors affecting rural migrants’ intentions to settle in cities.

This section ties together Gupta’s life-long research and ideology to his vision for India. He discusses the concepts of space and non-space and posits the nation state as a cultural space. Gupta underlines the distinction between secularism and secularization and argues that in India, secularization is still at a very unfinished state. While we have a democratic system, citizenship and modernity have not progressed. The deification of politicians in Tamil Nadu is discussed. When politicians start patronizing religious functions and use religious symbols in public acts, secularization is compromised to indulge in the politics of majoritarinism and minoritism. India is progressive in intent but it is compromising in deed. The goals of citizenship move ahead, once a victory is achieved, new obstacles appear.
