Background and Purposes: Through this study, we hope to gain more insights into the differences in outcome following an ischemic stroke between the floating population and the indigenous population of Shanghai.Method: In this retrospective cohort study, we analyzed patients with first-ever acute ischemic stroke who were admitted to a comprehensive stroke center in the Minhang district, Shanghai, from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2020. All patient's demographic data and medical histories were prospectively collected and they were followed up for at least 3 months. The Indigenous population of Shanghai was defined as patients with an identification number starting with 310. All others were treated as floating population. The primary outcome was defined as an unfavorable prognosis at 3 months, with a modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score above 1. Secondary outcomes included the use of emergency medical service (EMS), 3 h arrival rate, and endovascular therapy in eligible patients. Logistic regression analysis was applied to investigate the differences.Results: Finally, 698 patients with first-ever acute ischemic stroke were included (with mean age of 65.32 years, 74.6% men). Of these, 302 patients belonged to the floating population group. Indigenous populations with ischemic stroke were older than the floating population (68.26 years vs. 61.47 years, P < 0.001). The floating population was more likely to achieve favorable outcomes at 3 months compared with the indigenous population in multivariable logistic regression analysis [Odds ratio (OR): 0.49, 95% CI: 0.32–0.75, P = 0.001]. The use of EMS, 3 h arrival rate, and the application of endovascular therapy were comparable between the floating population and indigenous population (OR: 0.89, 95% CI: 0.62–1.27, P = 0.519; OR: 0.78, 95% CI: 0.56–1.09, P = 0.14; and OR: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.54–1.26, P = 0.365, respectively).Conclusion: Compared with the indigenous population, the floating population with the first-ever ischemic stroke was more likely to have a favorable outcome at 3 months.

The livability environment is an important aspect of urban sustainable development. The floating population refers to people without local hukou (also called ‘non-hukou migrants’). The floating population distribution is influenced by livability environment, but few studies have investigated this relationship. Especially, the influence of social environment on floating population distribution is rarely studied. Therefore, we study 1054 communities in Guangzhou’s urban district to explore the relationship between livability environment and floating population distribution. The purpose of this article is to study how livability environment affects floating population distribution. We develop a conceptual framework of livability environment, which consists of physical environment, social environment and life convenience. A cross-sectional dataset of the impact of livability environment on the floating population distribution is developed covering the proportion of floating population in the community as the dependent variable, eight factors of livability environment as the explanatory variables, and two factors of architectural characteristics and one factor of location characteristics as the control variables. We use spatial regression models to explore the degree of influence and direction of physical environment, social environment and life convenience on the floating population distribution in livability environment. The results show that the spatial error model is more effective than ordinary least squares and spatial lag model models. The five factors of the livability environment have statistical significance regarding floating population distribution, including four social environment factors (proportion of middle- and high-class occupation population, proportion of highly educated people in the population, proportion of rental households, and unemployment rate) and regarding life convenience factors (work and shopping convenience). The conclusion has value for understanding how the social environment affects the residential choice of the floating population. This study will help city administrators reasonably guide the residential pattern of the floating population and formulate reasonable management policies, thereby improving the city’s livability, attractiveness and sustainable development.

Abstract This paper uses data from the 2014 and 2016 China Labor Force Survey to investigate the relationship between physical exercise, social integration and urban hukou acquisition decision-making in the floating population. We find that physical exercise and social integration can directly promote the acquisition of urban hukou in floating populations, and physical exercise promotes the acquisition of urban hukou in floating populations by increasing their degree of social integration. So, social integration is the intermediary between the floating population's physical exercise and urban hukou acquisition decision-making. Specifically, the mediating effect is most pronounced in the non-agricultural and female floating population. The results suggest that the construction of amenities for physical exercise and communal physical activities can not only promote the development of a harmonious society, but also effectively encourage the floating population to acquire urban hukou in their city of work and promote the development of the new urbanization of China.JEL classifications: G80-05, J15, R23

ObjectiveTo analyse the spatial clustering of COVID-19 case fatality risks in the districts of Bangladesh and to explore the association of sociodemographic indicators with these risks.Study designEcological study.Study settingSecondary data were collected for a total of 64 districts of Bangladesh.MethodsThe data for district-wise COVID-19 cases were collected from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Bangladesh from March 2020 to June 2020. Socioeconomic and demographic data were collected from National Census Data, 2011. Retrospective spatial analysis was conducted based on district-wise COVID-19 cases in Bangladesh. Global Moran’s I was adopted to find out the significance of the clusters. Furthermore, generalised linear model was conducted to find out the association of COVID-19 cases with sociodemographic variables.ResultsTotal 87 054 COVID-19 cases were included in this study. The epidemic hotspots were distributed in the 11 most populous cities. The most likely clusters are primarily situated in the central, south-eastern and north-western regions of the country. High-risk clusters were found in Dhaka (Relative Risk (RR): 5.22), Narayanganj (RR: 2.70), Chittagong (RR: 1.69), Munshiganj (RR: 2.31) Cox’s Bazar (RR: 1.63), Faridpur (RR: 1.65), Gazipur (RR: 1.33), Bogra (RR: 1.35), Khulna (RR: 1.22), Barishal (RR: 1.07) and Noakhali (RR: 1.06). Weekly progression of COVID-19 cases showed spatially clustered by Moran’s I statistics (p value ranging from 0.013 to 0.436). After fitting a Poisson linear model, we found a positive association of COVID-19 with floating population rate (RR=1.542, 95% CI 1.520 to 1.564), and urban population rate (RR=1.027, 95% CI 1.026 to 1.028).ConclusionThis study found the high-risk cluster areas in Bangladesh and analysed the basic epidemiological issues; further study is needed to find out the common risk behaviour of the patients and other relative issues that involve the spreading of this infectious disease.

AbstractYoung people are the backbone of urban development and an important pillar of social stability. The growth of young floating population in China has given rise to urban land expansion. Understanding the urban life pattern of urban life for young people benefits rational and effective land expansion. In this article, we introduce food delivery data into the process of exploring behavioral patterns of urban youth in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. The dynamic time warping (DTW) distance-based k-medoids method is applied to explore the main activity areas and activity patterns of the urban youth population. The results indicate that many young people from Hangzhou work in Internet companies, and most of work hotspot areas are observed in high-tech parks. The existence of overtime work is proved. Combined with the housing price data in Hangzhou, it is found that young people consider both housing prices and education environment when choosing where to live. The analysis combined with road network data reflects the planning characteristics of the city, also looks into differences between the actual city functions and the planning map. The proposed methods can provide useful guidance and suggestions for city planning.

<p>In the past two decades, China has realised one of the fastest and largest rural to urban migrations in the world. The country’s urban population has increased by 20% over the last 20 years due to rapid urbanisation and a drastic improvement in urban opportunities. It is projected that by the year 2020 China aims to house 60% of its population in urban areas, resulting in a population shift of over 100 million people. One of the major issues which is presented to rural migrants is the hukou system. Hukou acts as a domestic passport which prevents rural migrants from attaining social benefits within urban areas. This has created an underclass within China’s urban areas known as the “floating population”.  This thesis focuses on the architecture of the “floating villages” of China which accommodate this floating population. The floating village is an informal settlement of migrant workers which develops around construction sites. The village provides services such as food, entertainment, medical care and recycling to the construction workers., However, as a pseudo-urban typology accommodating many of the functions of a town, it lacks one important element: a focused communal area. The absence of deliberately designed a communal space has led to social tensions within the floating village due to the different cultural origins of the migrant workers. Migrant workers arrive in floating villages without knowledge of urban culture and with no communal support. Varying migrant accents, and traditions, alongside struggles with poverty, creates friction between workers.  This thesis proposes a temporary and portable architectural intervention within the floating village which fosters a positive community. The research of community design is explored through an architecturalisation of Dr Robert D. Putnam’s understanding of social capital.</p>

China has the largest population of floating rural-to-urban women worldwide, most of whom are of childbearing age. However, few studies have been conducted to monitor the changing trends in parenting outcomes, mental health and social support for these women in the early postpartum period. In this quantitative longitudinal study, 680 primiparous women among the floating population were recruited in Shenzhen, China. Face-to-face collection of socio-demographic questionnaires was completed by researchers in maternity wards on the third postnatal day. Follow-up electronic questionnaires were dispatched to women via email or WeChat at 6 weeks and 12 weeks following childbirth, including the Self-efficacy in Infant Care Scale (SICS), Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and Postnatal Social Support Scale (PSSS), to measure maternal self-efficacy (MSE), postpartum depression (PPD) and social support, respectively. The mean scores of MSE for these floating women were 67.16 (14.35) at 6 weeks postpartum and slightly increased to 68.71 (15.00) at 12 weeks postpartum. The mean scores of EPDS remained almost stable, from 11.19 (4.89) to 11.18 (5.34) at the two time points. The prevalence of mild and severe PPD among floating women at 6 and 12 weeks after childbirth decreased from 54.4% to 40.1% and from 50.6% to 35.4%, respectively. The mean score of social support was 37.04 (10.15) at 6 weeks postpartum and slightly improved to 38.68 (10.46) at 12 weeks postpartum. Primiparous women among the rural-to-urban migrant population had an obviously negative status of parenting outcomes and mental health; and there was a lack of social support after childbirth. In future, tailored evidence-based interventions are highly needed to promote floating women’s parenting outcomes, mental wellbeing and social support in the early stages of motherhood. As a higher-risk group of PPD, primiparous women among the floating population require effective and accessible mental health care after childbirth, such as early PPD screening and timely therapeutic methods.

With the rapid development of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and transportation infrastructure, the flows of people between cities have become the cornerstone of shaping regional integration. Although research studies about the movement of people have aroused widespread interest in academia, research about the temporal and spatial dynamics of daily mobility between cities is sparse, which is called the temporal heterogeneity of mobility between cities. This research aims to study the temporal and spatial changes (Heterogeneity) of population mobility between cities, using big data obtained through China Unicom, in terms of mapping the spatial network of population mobility and complex network analysis, from which the following findings emerge: (1) On weekends, the gap between cities in the number of floating population flow and the capacity of transferring population has become smaller, indicating that there is better coordination between cities on weekends. (2) There are huge differences in population flow between cities, which reflects the imbalance of urban development, population is more concentrated in cities with higher level of development. (3) The heterogeneity of population flow between cities at weekdays and weekends is closely related to the city’s hierarchy, which can help us study the hierarchical structure of China’s cities from a dynamic perspective. The paper emphasizes the importance of researching heterogeneity issues, clarifies the difference between the heterogeneity of weekdays and weekends and the heterogeneity involved in previous population research fields in terms of population flow and deficiencies in research.
