Recreational SCUBA diving on the coral reefs is one of the few activities allowed in the area managed by the Centro Internacional de Buceo María la Gorda at the Guanahacabibes National Park. The composition and structure of fish associations were evaluated on the reefs visited by users of the diving center. To assess possible seasonal changes in fish community densities and composition surveys were carried during the dry and rainy seasons. Visual censuses were carried out at eight diving sites comprising two characteristic reef biotopes. Indices for diversity, evenness, species richness, density, and fish biomass were estimated. Mean density values by sampling site did not show significant differences between seasons. A total of 134 species were recorded in the area. Fish abundances were greater in sites of higher structural complexity, matching areas of ridges on the reef slope. Prevalence of small-sized fish and a general poor presence of medium to high-sized fish were observed. Fish families with the higher densities were Pomacentridae and Labridae, and those with the higher biomass were Lutjanidae and Labridae. The trophic structure was dominated by phytophagous and omnivorous fish. Medium-sized carnivorous fish were observed, however, their densities were much lower than for the rest of the trophic groups, which could be a consequence of illegal fishing activities.

Lionfish (Pterois volitans) invaded the Caribbean region with the potential to alter the composition and structure of native coral reef fish communities. The objective of this study was to analyze the diversity indices of these fish communities potentially affected by lionfish predation and to compare with pre-invasion data. The study was undertaken in two Caribbean marine protected areas (MPAs): Guanahacabibes National Park (PNG) in W Cuba and Xcalak Reefs National Park (PNAX) in S Quintana Roo. We carried out visual censuses of fish species in reef habitats during the dry and rainy seasons of the period 2013-2015. For this, nine sites were defined and evaluated using stationary counts. Our results showed higher species richness (43.47 ± 5.14) and mean abundance (0.76 ± 1.25) in PNG than in PNAX (40.22 ± 4.96, 0.19 ± 0.46, respectively). Diversity decreased after the arrival of lionfish in a single site of PNG and in two sites of the PNAX, but apparently, these results are more related to the fishing activity effect than to the lionfish presence. Based on the results and assuming that changes in the native fish communities by lionfish may not yet be detected, we recommend to continue the monitoring community descriptions in order to detect future changes in native fish communities.

The aim of this study was to determine the trophic structure of the fish community in the Bananal stream subbasin, which belongs to a well-preserved Cerrado area (Brazilian Savanna) in Brasília National Park, Brazil. We also evaluated the influence of environmental variations in the diet of fish species. Four samples were taken in each 30 m long established transect, two in the rainy season and two in the dry season. A total of 1,050 stomachs of the 13 most abundant species were analyzed. A total of 36 food items were consumed, where 24 were autochthonous, 8 allochthonous, and 4 of undetermined origin. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis, in addition to the results of frequency of occurrence and abundance charts, was used to determine four groups of feeding guilds: detritivores, omnivores (tending toward herbivory and invertivory), invertivores and piscivores. Around 69% of the volume of resources consumed was allochthonous, which proves the importance of the resources provided by riparian vegetation. The contribution of autochthonous and allochthonous items in the diet differed due to seasonality for Aspidoras fuscoguttatus, Astyanax sp., Characidium xanthopterum, Hyphessobrycon balbus, Kolpotocheirodon theloura, Moenkhausia sp., Phalloceros harpagos, and Rivulus pictus. Despite the Cerrado climate characteristics, there was no significant influence of season on the fish diet. The absence of seasonal variation and the predominance of allochthonous items in the fish diet are probably associated with the presence of riparian vegetation, which acts as a transition area in the Cerrado biome and provides resources for the aquatic fauna. This work shows the importance of studies in non-disturbed areas considered here as a source of information concerning the biology of fish species and as a guide for direct conservation policies on the management of aquatic resources, recovery of damaged areas and determination of priority areas for conservation.

Baluran National Park is a oldes national park and unique in terms of existing ecosystems. One area that is considered to be of broad condition is Bama Resort. Baluran National Park has various forest formations including mangrove formations, coastal forests, savana forests, seasonal forests, rainforests, and plain forests. This study aims to examine the composition and structure of each forest formation in Baluran National Park in East Java. The number of plant species found in mangrove forest formations were 6 species, 40 species of coastal forest, 37 species of savana forest, 44 species of rain forest, 28 species of lowland forest, and 50 species of seasonal forest formations. The highest density values were in savana forest formation at the seedlings and understorey level of 132445 ind / ha while the density at the tree level was found in the mangrove forest formation of 346 ind / ha. The diversity index of seedlings and understorey species is medium (2 <H '<3) while for other growth rates it is classified as medium and low (0 <H' <3). The value of community similarity between overall forest formations is categorized as low (values below 50%.). Overall header stratification in each formation is in strata c. Key words: Forest Formation, Species Composition, Structure, Baluran National Park

In order to look at changes in coral and reef fish communities during the period of 2006 to 2013, this research was carried out at Bunaken National Park (BNP) with 26 observation sites. The existing data and information of reef fish communities in the park generally could not be used as representative for describing the whole region. Percentage of coral cover and fish abundance during the study period shows that Bunaken Island is more similar to other locations. Reef fish community structure as seen from ecological index (H' at all sites being categorized, E category labile and low category C) shows the condition of the reef fish community is still good. Changes in the structure of reef fish communities showed declining conditions compared to 2006, and coral cover continued to decrease compared to 1998 and 2007. Good overall reef fish and coral cover have decreased; it is thought to be related to the pressure in BNP. Some of the pressures in the region were (i) increasing numbers of domestic as well as foreign visitors, (ii) increasing number of residents in the region, as well as the burden of waste and trash from the Bay of Manado.

This study evaluated the Arctiini fauna of the Serra do Pardo National Park (Pará, Brazil) between 22 September and 3 October 2011. Light traps were left one night in each sampling site (SS) from 18:00 h to 6:00 h of the next day. The following parameters were evaluated: richness (S), abundance (N), diversity index (H’), Shannon uniformity (U) index, and Berger-Parker dominance (BP). Richness was estimated using the non-parametric methods Chao1, Chao2, ACE, ICE, Jackknife1, Jackknife2 and Bootstrap. A total of 3,247 specimens were captured, belonging to 221 Arctiini taxa; 32 of these are new records for the state of Pará and, of these, six are new records for the Brazilian Amazon. The Arctiini fauna is very rich and uniform. The richness estimator and rarefaction curve indicated the need for increased sampling efforts in the area.
