In Brown and Levinson’s (1978) seminal classification of positive politeness strategies, commiserating is listed in the subgroup referred to as human-relations wants. The qualitative and quantitative ana­lysis of a corpus consisting of five Internet discussion boards has shown that it is also one of the most frequent positive politeness strategies used there. All the threads under examination are dedicated to the so-called women’s topics, such as dieting, pregnancy, infertility or mothering. The members of these close-knit communities formed upon the boards find it necessary to express sympathy in order to enhance each other’s (positive) face and avoid face-threatening acts arising from the sensitive nature of these topics. However, the analysis of the corpus has also revealed that to commiserate merely by saying they are sorry is not enough. The interlocutors find it necessary to add often complex redressi­ve actions to boost the illocutionary force of their statements. Thus the aim of the paper is to explore the formulaic character of commiserations and categorise the numerous redressive actions following them, taking into account their two main functions, i.e. building rapport and facilitating smooth communication within online communities.

This study is primarily concerned with examining the speech acts and politeness strategies manifested in American presidential victory speech. The study aims at showing the applicability of both Searle's classification of speech acts and Leech's politeness maxims appeared in this genre by finding out the frequency and percentage of the two types. Then, analyzing the variation of these types among the selected samples. The research follows a mixed method of analysis as both qualitative and quantitative methods are used. It has been concluded that four forms of Searle's illocutionary acts have appeared in American presidential victory speech. These acts are assertives, expressives, directives and commissives, while declaration speech acts have never been used by the selected candidates. Regarding politeness theory, it has been found that approbation and agreement have the most frequent occurrence in this genre compared to the other maxims.

Due to the increasing prevalence of asynchronous learning platforms, the development and implementation of online discussion boards have become important considerations in the design of post-secondary learning environments. This research is conducted as a case study of the online discussion board use in a small engineering education graduate course, consisting of in-class and online discussion components. By varying the structure of the online discussion board to allow different types of student interaction, the study identifies trends in discussion board use, specifically pertaining to student participation, student collaboration, and the integration between in-class and online discussions. As a result, the study provides insight into the utility and limitations of online discussion boards in post-secondary courses.

PurposeThis study examines whether online asynchronous discussion forums support student’s meaning-making about citizenship in a globalizing world. Citizenship is an increasingly contested identity for young people, yet they have few opportunities in traditional civic education to consider their own citizenship. Although online discussions are considered effective spaces for increasing dialogue and critical thinking between diverse students, there has been little research to understand how effective they are for helping students to construct new understandings of citizenship.Design/methodology/approachA content analysis approach was used to analyze and code 89 discussion board posts. The Interaction Analysis Model (IAM) coding scheme was used to describe and analyze the quality of knowledge construction that occurred across the posts focusing on different aspects of global citizenship.FindingsThe findings demonstrate that the discussion boards produced substantive talks about the meaning of citizenship that in some instances reached the level of new knowledge construction. The students considered different meanings for global citizenship and negotiated positions on key issues. However, the highest levels of knowledge construction were rarely reached.Practical implicationsA major implication is the need to organize and cue discussion boards to support knowledge construction in addition to fostering dialogue.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the role that technology can play in supporting students’ knowledge construction about global citizenship that go beyond the scripted meanings conveyed in civics classes.

The article describes the experience of using laser puncturing methods for dysarthria in children with all forms of cerebral palsy. Statistical data of treated children with dysarthria by age, types of dysarthria and the results of course treatment with laser punctures on the s calp zones and acupuncture points of the corporeal meridians were analyzed and points of the auricle depending on the form of cerebral palsy and the type of dysarthria according to the pathogenetic criterion in 334 children for the period from 2017 to 2019. Based on the visual study of the volume of active movements of articulatory muscles, qualitative and quantitative dynamics of speech activity, a conclusion was made about the positive effectiveness in 200 (63 %) children. The greatest effectiveness was observed among children over 7 years of age – 60 % (200 children) and in pseudobulbar 79 % (197 children), cerebellar 77 % (31 children), subcortical 52 % (13 children) dysarthria. The lowest effectiveness was observed in children with severe forms of dysarthria by the degree of intelligibility to others (classification of J. Tardieu) 40 % (134 children) and in children under 7 years of age (32 %), with mixed dysarthria 45 % (9 children). The results of treatment allow us to conclude that the laser puncturing it is effective and should be systematically (1 time in 3 months if possible) included in the complex of sanatorium-resort rehabilitation for dysarthria in children with cerebral palsy, which will speed up the recovery time of articulation.

Abstract Questioning is considered as one of the most dominant features in virtually every classroom discourse. This study aims at examining the types and functions of teacher questions that facilitate student learning in an EFL class in Vietnam. The classification of questions employed in the study follows the work proposed by Richards and Lockhart in 2007. Participants in the research were one teacher and 25 students in an English university class in Vietnam. The data was collected through classroom observation and audio recording. Both qualitative and quantitative content analysis were utilized to analyze the data. The findings of the study indicate that the most frequently used question types were convergent and divergent questions, and procedural questions only accounted for a small proportion. Furthermore, it was found that convergent questions were employed to check and guide students’ understanding of the lesson’s target lexical items, while divergent ones were used to promote students’ further analysis and their own evaluation of the knowledge provided in the study material. Finally, procedural questions were chiefly posed when the teacher monitored students in class activities. Keywords: classroom discourse, classroom interaction, teacher questions

Abstract This article provides an insight into the expression of reportative evidentiality in Spanish scientific articles published between 1799 and 1920. Central to the discussion is the presence and specificity of sources in reportative constructions. While contemporary scientific discourse prioritizes the use of specific, reportative-quotative evidentials, this is not a constant feature of articles analyzed in this study. In order to trace this historical variation, we established a classification of reportative constructions according to the specificity of the evidence they convey and we conducted both qualitative and quantitative analyses. According to our results, different specificity patterns were prominent in different temporal stages of the period under review. We argue that this can be interpreted in light of the growth and changing practices of the scientific community.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the following questions: What are the types of discussion prompts in a fully online graduate course? What are the key characteristics of students’ discussion initial posts and replies in a fully online graduate course? In what ways, if any, do discussion prompts influence the types of initial posts and replies in discussion threads? Design/methodology/approach This study adopted a qualitative approach to explore the dynamics of students’ knowledge construction through using asynchronous discussion boards. A total of 20 discussion prompts and 115 discussion threads from nine archival discussion boards in a fully online library science course were collected and analyzed. Findings The findings identified open-ended, explanatory and reflective prompts in discussion boards. Students engaged in simply stating, paraphrasing, elaborating, extending, reflecting, socializing and sharing emotions in discussion posts. These findings highlighted the interconnectedness of reflection and socio-emotional interactions in a community of inquiry and pointed out their important roles to support richer and deeper online discussions. The study further observed linkages between the types of discussion prompts and the types of discussion posts. Originality/value This study addressed an urgent need to understand the use of online discussion boards in an emergency remote teaching condition in a pandemic. The findings of this study offered educators insights into evidence-based design recommendations for prompts to support students’ knowledge construction and deep learning through using discussion boards.

Public interest in cryptocurrencies has consistently risen over the past decade. Owing to this rapid growth, cryptocurrency-related information is being increasingly shared online. As considerable portions of such information in online communities are noise, extracting meaningful information is important. Therefore, judging whose opinion should be considered more important or who the opinion leaders in online communities are is critical. This study analyzed the topics that contain meaningful information, in particular, user groups, by investigating the correlation between topic weights and their price change. The proposed analysis method involves (1) effective classification of the user groups using a hypertext-induced topic selection algorithm, (2) textual information analysis through topic modeling, and (3) the identification of user groups that have a high interest in the Bitcoin price by measuring the correlation between the price and the topics and by measuring the topic similarities between each user group and all users to determine the user group that can effectively represent the entire community. By analyzing the information shared by users, we observed that most users are interested in the price information, whereas users having social influence are not only interested in the price but also in other information.
