There have been only a few attempts so far of setting journalism education in the context of sustainability, but there is not the theoretical proposition of the general paradigm of sustainable journalistic education. By critical analysis of the tradition of journalism education and research of it, the paper identifies all emergences of journalistic education in the context of development and sustainability. Based on the evolution of academic proposals to advance journalism education, most current references are aimed at updating journalistic knowledge and acquiring skills connected to the technological revolution leading to substantial media change, journalistic genres convergence, journalism producing trends, different subjects that create journalism and new socially important topics, all followed by upgraded media ethics and laws mirroring the importance of strong links between academy, profession and the public. In complex global surroundings, however, while the media form realities, impose understandings and meanings, follow us everywhere and fully participate in our lives, education of journalists should be understood much deeper and taken more seriously than ever. Apart from being professionally educated, autonomous and responsible, (self)-conscious humanists are needed to cope and properly respond to such challenges. The sustainable cycle of journalism education could answer those needs by focusing on the academic outcome of a journalist as a whole human being if the holistic education perspective is applied. Based on the Journalistic Personality Model, the aim of this theoretical paper is to elaborate on the concept of sustainable journalism education and its advantages.Key Words:holistic education, journalism curriculum, Journalistic Personality Model, sustainable development, sustainable journalism educationDo sada je zabilježeno tek nekoliko pokuaja postavljanja novinarskog obrazovanja u kontekst održivoga razvoja, ali ne i teorijski prijedlog opće paradigme održivoga novinarskog obrazovanja. Kritičkom analizom tradicije obrazovanja novinara i istraživanja o njemu, rad utvrđuje sve pojavnosti novinarskog obrazovanja u kontekstu razvoja i održivosti. Međutim, u složenom globalnom okruženju u kojemu mediji oblikuju stvarnost, nameću razumijevanja i značenja, prate nas svugdje i potpuno sudjeluju u naem životu, obrazovanje novinara treba razumijevati dublje i ozbiljnije nego ikada.

The purpose of the article is to study the role of television series as a system-forming factor of modern public communication in the field of domestic television space. The relevance of the article is determined by the insufficient knowledge of the structure and content of modern television series, which is the public basis of communication. In the scientific discourse there are no works that make it possible to comprehend the television series as part of the general cultural media space and contribute to the identification of semiotic codes that determine the unity of the sphere of public communication. The article points out that the development of the information and cultural space is becoming a factor of a powerful influence on society, especially young people. The article reveals the basic principles of building a postmodern television space, defines its specificity as an element of cultural policy. In this sense, the thematic content of the television series is based not so much on the foundation of pure artistic creativity as on the information field that the media form. The television series has the ability to blur the line between documentary and artistic reality and brings this communication characteristic to a new level – creating artistically revised reconstructions of real events within the framework of the paradigm “as it really was”. Due to this, the television can have a powerful manipulative potential.

In 1876, an American newspaperman with the US 7th Cavalry, Mark Kellogg, declared: ‘I go with Custer, and will be at the death.’ This overtly heroic pronouncement embodies what many still want to believe is the greatest role in journalism: to go up to the fight, to be with ‘the boys’, to expose yourself to risk, to get the story and the blood-soaked images, to vividly describe a world of strength and weakness, of courage under fire, of victory and defeat—and, quite possibly, to die. So culturally embedded has this idea become that it raises hopes among thousands of journalism students worldwide that they too might become that holiest of entities in the media pantheon, the television war correspondent. They may find they have left it too late. Accompanied by evolutionary technologies and breathtaking media change, TV war reporting has shifted from an independent style of filmed reportage to live pieces-to-camera from reporters who have little or nothing to say. In this article, I explore how this has come about; offer some views about the resulting negative impact on practitioners and the public; and explain why, in my opinion, our ‘right to know’ about warfare has been seriously eroded as a result. Caption: The technology has improved, but the risks do not go away. Freelancer John Martinkus, author of A Dirty Little War about East Timor, seen here on assignment for SBS Dateline in Kunar province, Afghanistan, in 2005, was kidnapped in Iraq—but he managed to escape. Others have not been so fortunate.

Good journalism remains central to the needs of the Pacific and her people. Good journalism education is central to this issue of Pacific Journalism Review, which features a selection of papers on journalism education in the Pacific, Australia and New Zealand. Drawn mostly from the papers presented to the Fourth World Journalism Education Congress (WJEC16), and the preconference organised by the Journalism Education and Research Association of Australia (JERAA) and the Pacific Media Centre with the Media Educators Pacific (MeP) at the Auckland University of Technology in July, they all reflect the importance of good journalism and good journalism education. Speaking at the opening of the preconference, University of Auckland Associate Professor Toeolesulusulu Damon Salesa said the profession was vital for bringing the Pacific community together. Dr Salesa, director of the newly founded New Zealand Institute for Pacific Research, which sponsored five Pacific media educators to attend the conferences, said journalism helped people engage in the public sphere.

Throughout the evolution of public political discourse we have repeatedly seen the effects of scandals on the careers of many politicians. Although the cultural and societal norms that have traditionally dictated the results of such scandals have changed dramatically within the last two centuries, I believe that the aftermath of these scandals may be better understood by analyzing and comparing the politician’s previously established public image to the scandal at hand. I will argue that a negative impact only occurs if and when there is a clear contradiction of character that presents the politician as a deceitful or hypocritical person in the media sphere and therefore the eyes of the public.

Mass Media technologies are developing rapidly and media has become an integral part of our day to day life. In this context, the development of media and journalism education in schools, universities and other institutions has been confronted with many challenges. Although there are training courses and educators covering a range of skills for print journalism, broadcast, telecast and online media, there are still many issues pertaining to the quality control, practical relevance and affordability of media and journalism education. Human resource management policies of media companies do not recognize priority on continuation of education of journalists (Gunawardene, 2015). This study focuses on challenges confronted by media education in Sri Lanka. The intensive interviews and focus group discussions have been applied to collect data and information. It has transpired during the research that media and journalism syllabi should be revised with more theoretical, conceptual and practical inputs based on media education and media literacy. It is necessary to make the public in general aware of media texts. The ever fluctuating dynamics of the media industry and media education has detrimentally affected the general perception on media.
