Changes in plasma concentrations of trace elements and oxidants/antioxidants were evaluated in twenty healthy Boerboels of both sexes and median age of 2 years. Antero-posterior and flexed lateral radiographs of the hip were obtained using digital x-ray machine and hip grading was done according to Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) system. Blood was collected from the cephalic vein for determination of plasma concentrations of manganese (Mn), magnesium (Mg), copper (Cu), cobalt (Co), malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and Vitamin E. Correlation between the parameters was done using Pearson’s correlation. Eleven (11/20) of the Boerboel dogs had hip dysplasia (HD), comprising five (5/9) males and six (6/11) females. Plasma Mn, Cu and Co were insignificantly higher in Boerboels with normal hips than those with HD. MDA concentration was significantly (p<0.05) lower in Boerboels with normal hips (0.75 ± 0.84 µmol/L) than in dogs with HD (1.77 ± 0.78 µmol/L), while SOD was significantly (p<0.05) higher in Boerboels with normal hips (0.65 ± 0.22 U/ml) than with HD (0.32 ± 0.16 U/ml). It was concluded that there were differences in plasma oxidants/antioxidants between Boerboel dogs with normal hips and those with hip dysplasia suggesting their role in the pathogenesis of canine hip dysplasia

Estrogen can putatively act as an antioxidant and protect tissues from exercise-induced oxidative stress. To test the in vivo efficacy of estrogen, the effects of 2 weeks of daily estrogen (40 µg·kg-1 body weight beta-estradiol 3-benzoate) injection on indices of immediate postexercise oxidative stress and antioxidant status were determined in adult male rats, with and without 8 weeks of prior dietary vitamin E deprivation. The treadmill running protocol (60 min at 21 m·min-1, 12% grade) induced significant oxidative stress as indicated by muscle glutathione status. Estrogen administration had little effect on postexercise tissue glutathione status, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activity, and vitamin E levels. Estrogen administration induced significant reductions in muscle, liver, and heart vitamin C concentrations following exercise, as well as in unexercised male rats. Tissue vitamin C loss was not directly mediated through liver glycogen or glutathione status. Thus, estrogen administration generally did not appear to influence postexercise tissue indices of oxidative stress or antioxidant status and may have contributed to a decline in overall antioxidant protection by inducing losses in tissue vitamin C content.Key words: glutathione, vitamin E, muscle, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase.

The article contains the research results of the effect of cadmium chloride on the indexes of enzyme and nonenzyme systems of  antioxidant defense system in young cattle, such as the activity of catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione levels of vitamins A and E. It is established that feeding calves at a dose of toxicant 0.04 mg / kg activity of catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione levels of vitamins A and E in the blood of experimental animals decreased throughout the experiment. The lowest indicators of antioxidant in the blood of young cattle is set on the twenty -fourth day of the experiment, which is associated with increased activation of lipid peroxidation and the balance between antioxidant system and lipid peroxidation intensity. Given the cadmium load of young cattle it is used a new integrated drug with antioxidant action «Metisevit», which includes metifen, sodium selenite and vitamin E wich is founded as stimulating effects on the activity of antioxidant protection. In particular,it is established probable increase in activity of catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione levels, vitamin A and vitamin E in the blood of young cattle, which has performed cadmium stress. These changes occur through comprehensive action components of the drug «Metisevit» that leads to the normalization of metabolic processes and free radical in the body of the bull. The results of the research indicate antioxidant drug «Metisevit» in the application of its young cattle and the validity of his administration to improve the body's antioxidant status of chronic cadmium toxicosis.

A new approach to solving matrix problems in x-ray fluorescence analysis of trace elements has been applied to the determination of bromine in saline waters and zinc in silicates. The method requires no prior knowledge of the chemical composition of the sample. Marked matrix effects are minimized by dilution, and the problem of variable backgrounds due to residual matrix effects is solved by using a slope-ratio technique. In this proposed technique, the slope of a standard curve prepared from pure solutions is compared with that of spiked samples. The ratio of the slopes of these two curves permits the calculation of an adjusted background which does not significantly differ from that of an absorbent impregnated with the sample matrix free of the element sought. Experimental parameters concerning the technique are presented. The excellent agreement of the zinc and bromine data with analytical results obtained by more conventional methods suggests that the technique can be used for the determination of other trace constituents in geologic materials. Application of the slope-ratio technique to other modes of instrumental analysis appears feasible.

Mineral trace element concentration of human saliva from healthy volunteers, were investigated by Proton-Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) analysis. The specimens were bombarded with Proton beams of 2 MeV from a Van de Graaff accelerator at NRC . The object of this measurement was to find a normal range of trace element concentration for Iranian people.
