Land use is one of the macro parameters that affects water quality in a watershed. The Cimanuk watershed which is dominated by agricultural land use and settlements has encountered a decline in water quality. There are eight parameters including pH, TDS, TSS, Nitrate, Phosphate, Sulphate, BOD, and COD analyzed to evaluate water quality utilizing the Pollution Index (IP) method. This research has provided a clear understanding of the status of water quality in the Cimanuk watershed based on six monitoring points carried out at the start of the 2018 rainy season. Overall, the IP values obtained ranged from 2.05 to 5.96 with the lightly polluted category at points A, B, C, D, and E, while for point F it was in the moderately polluted category. The key parameters that have the most influence on water quality pollution are Nitrate, Phosphate, Sulphate from fertilization activities in agricultural land, while runoff from settlements contribute to increasing parameters of  BOD and COD. These results can be beneficial for sustainable management of water and land resources in the Cimanuk watershed.

The article considers the concept of organic farming, the state and prospects of its development in the trends of climate change. The main problems of organic production on the territory of Ukraine are investigated. It was revealed that for the introduction of organic farming it is necessary to improve the regulatory framework, improve the level of public awareness, take into account the difficulties in growing organic products. The stages of transition of the agrarian enterprise from traditional to organic system of managing are considered. The ecological and toxicological condition of arable lands of Vinnytsia region was also analyzed. The main requirements for the quality of land intended for organic farming, the main among which is the absence of pollution by pesticides, heavy metals, radionuclides and others. It is established that the lands of Vinnytsia region can be divided into two groups of suitability for organic production: suitable and unsuitable. The negative tendency to reduce the application of organic and mineral fertilizers, as well as the active growth of sunflower sown areas due to changes in climatic and agrometeorological conditions of the region, more and more farms use heat-loving crops, displacing traditional grain and technical, which increases the load on agricultural land. There are several features of the implementation of agronomic techniques in the transition period to organic farming in the context of climate change for the territory of Vinnytsia region. It was found that the territory of Vinnytsia region has all the ecological prerequisites for the introduction and conduct of organic farming. However, due to the irrational use of land resources of the region, there is a phenomenon of their degradation: reduced fertility, deteriorating quality, complete withdrawal from economic use. The introduction of organic farming in Vinnytsia will preserve and significantly improve the quality of land resources.

This article reviews the concept of organic farming, describes organic farming systems and their characteristics. It has been found out that the development rates of organic farming are constantly increasing on the territory of Ukraine, and in particular on the territory of Rivne region. It was discovered that for the implementation of organic farming it is necessary to improve the regulatory framework. The main requirements for the quality of land intended for organic agriculture were investigated in this study. The main of these requirements is the absence of contamination with pesticides, heavy metals, radio-nuclides and other pollutants. It was revealed that the territory of Rivne region has all the social, economic and environmental conditions for organic farming implementing. However, due to irrational land resources use in the region, land degradation has emerged. This is manifested in the reduction of fertility, declining quality, withdrawal from agricultural use. Also exam-ined are the basic requirements for the quality of land intended for organic farming. It was established that Rivne agricultural land belongs to three groups of suitability for organic farming. These groups are: suitable, limitedly suitable and unsuitable. The analysis of the region’s qualitative state changes in agricultural lands for the period 2000-2010 has been done. The land’s quality has deteriorated significantly over the last 10 years: the suitable group’s lands have moved to the limited suitability group, and agricultural land from the limited suitability group has moved to a group of unsuitable ones. The organic farming implementation in the Rivne region will preserve and improve the quality of land resources significantly.

One of the major environmental issues currently facing New Zealand is that of the sustainability of pastoral farming on North Island hill country. To be sustainable, a system must be resource conserving, environmentally compatible, socially supportive and commer-cially competitive. The Resource Management Act defines sustainable management as managing the use, development and protection of natural and physical resources in a way, or at a rate, which enables people and community to meet their needs without unduly compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Evidence shows that at present this is not so for some hill country, for reasons of on-site land degradation and soil loss, and off-site sediment loading. Socioeconomic sustainability is also in doubt through deterioration in rural infrastructure and social services and steadily decreasing average returns for produce. In the long term there is no conflict between environmental and economic sustainability. The major conflict arises in the short term when the environmental needs of the community can conflict severely with the economic survival of the individual land holder. Adoption of sustainable management will require a much greater understanding of the dynamic interaction between land resources and land use practices and improved matching of land uses with inherent soil and climatic properties. A quantitative understanding of the relationship between biophysical stability of our land resources and their productive capability is required. This paper attempts to: (i) examine how biophysical indicators could be used to quantify the impact of current land use on the productive capability of our hill land resource, and in so doing identify several critical issues facing hill country farmers, and (ii) discuss some of the possible solutions to what we see are currently unsustainable farming practices. It is our contention that the adoption of sustainable management practices will ensure the long-term viability of this sector of the pasture industry and not, as many suggest, its demise. Обґрунтовано необхідність розвитку органічного землеробства в Україні як умови зростання експо-рту аграрної продукції в Європейський Союз, що одночасно забезпечує збереження і відтворення якісних характеристик земельних ресурсів. Дове-дено, що тенденції попиту на органічну продукцію в Європейському Союзі та наявні якісні й екологіч-но чисті земельні ресурси в Україні створюють передумови для активізації органічного виробниц-тва і відповідного експорту. Визначено проблеми, що стримують впровадження даної системи землеробства, та пропозиції щодо їх розв’язання. The necessity of the development of organic farming in Ukraine, as a condition of growth of exports of agricultural products to the European Union was grounded. That at the same time ensures the preservation and reproduction of the qualitative characteristics of land resources. It is proved that the trend of demand for organic products in the European Union and the available high-quality and environmentally friendly land resources in Ukraine create the preconditions for enhancing organic production and corresponding exports. The problems hindering the implementation of the farming system and proposals for their solution were defined.
