ABSTRACTWe present femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption data taken on polydiacetylene-pTS single crystals over the entire wavelength region of exciton resonance. Observed optical changes are accounted for by a model which predicts quantitatively the large resonant and nonresonant optical nonlinearities.

Understanding the energy transfer in phycobilisomes extracted from cyanobacteria can be used for building biomimetic hybrid systems for optimized solar energy collection and photocurrent amplification. In this paper, we applied time-resolved absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy to investigate the ultrafast dynamics in a hemidiscoidal phycobilisome obtained from Arthrospira platensis. We obtained the steady-state and time-resolved optical properties and identified the possible pathways of the excitation energy transfer in the phycobilisome and its components, phycocyanin and allophycocyanin. The transient absorption data were studied using global analysis and revealed the existence of ultrafast kinetics down to 850 fs in the phycobilisome. The fluorescence lifetimes in the nanosecond time-scale assigned to the final emitters in each sample were obtained from the time-correlated single photon counting fluorescence experiments.

AbstractTwo-dimensional layered materials (2DLM) have become the subject of intensive research in various applications such as electronics, photonics and optoelectronics due to their unique physical properties. As a new class of 2DLM, MXenes have attracted great interest due to their superior performance in a wide variety of applications such as batteries, supercapacitors, catalysts, electronics and optics. Here, we have investigated the broadband spatial self-phase modulation (SSPM) and ultrafast response of the MXene Ti3C2Tx (T=O, OH or F) experimentally. The MXene Ti3C2Tx exhibited the broadband nonlinear optical response via SSPM from 400 nm to ~1 μm under the ultrafast laser excitation, and ultrafast carrier characteristics with an ultrafast recovery time with femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The experimental results have shown that the MXenes have the broadband nonlinear optical response, which can lay a foundation for the application prospect for the MXene-based ultrafast optoelectronic devices.

Gallium sulfide (GaS) is a layered metal monochalcogenide semiconductor that has recently garnered considerable attention in various fields. In this study, we investigated the nonlinear absorption characteristics of multilayer β-GaS thin films on sapphire substrate by using femtosecond open-aperture Z-scan method. The β-GaS films exhibit saturable absorption behavior at 532 nm while nonlinear absorption appears under 650 nm excitation. The nonlinear absorption coefficient of β-GaS was determined to be −1.8 × 10–8 m/W and 4.9 × 10–8 m/W at 532 and 650 nm, respectively. The carrier dynamics of β-GaS films was studied via femtosecond transient absorption (TA) measurements. The TA results demonstrated that β-GaS films have broad photo-induced absorption in the visible regime and sub-nanosecond lifetime. Our results indicate that gallium sulfide has large nonlinear optical response and long carrier lifetime, which could be applied in future photonic devices.
