ABSTRACTThe electrical resistivity and crystal structure of three Ni-based periodic multilayer thin film systems (Al/Ni, Ti/Ni, and Cu/Ni) have been investigated. In each series of films the Ni layer thickness was systematically varied while the thickness of the ‘spacer’ layer (Al, Ti, or Cu) was fixed. In the Al/Ni and Ti/Ni systems films with very thin Ni layers (and consequently large volume fractions of spacer and ‘interfacial’ material) yielded very high resistivities which dropped rapidly with increasing Ni thickness. By contrast, the resistivity of Cu/Ni multilayers continuously increased with Ni layer thickness due to the decline in volume fraction of high conductivity Cu. Both the Al/Ni and Ti/Ni systems exhibit Ni(111) texture in the thicker Ni layer samples. As the Ni layer thickness decreases the Ni(111) peak loses intensity and broadens due to finer grain size and increasing disorder. Al-Ni and Ti-Ni compounds are also noted. In the Cu/Ni system, however, the sharpness of the Ni(111) peak passes through a minimum as the Ni layer thickness decreases but then increases for the thinnest Ni layer samples.

Materials with compositionally modulated structures have gained much attention recently due to potential improvement in electrical, magnetic and mechanical properties. Specifically, Cu-Nb laminate systems have been extensively studied mainly due to the combination of high strength, and superior thermal and electrical conductivity that can be obtained and optimized for the different applications. The effect of layer thickness on the hardness, residual stress and electrical resistivity has been investigated. In general, increases in hardness and electrical resistivity have been observed with decreasing layer thickness. In addition, reduction in structural scale has caused the formation of a metastable structure which exhibits uniquely different properties. In this study, we report the formation of b.c.c. Cu in highly textured Cu/Nb nanolayers. A series of Cu/Nb nanolayered films, with alternating Cu and Nb layers, were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering onto Si {100} wafers. The nominal total thickness of each layered film was 1 μm. The layer thickness was varied between 1 nm and 500 nm with the volume fraction of the two phases kept constant at 50%. The deposition rates and film densities were determined through a combination of profilometry and ion beam analysis techniques. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (XTEM) was used to examine the structure, phase and grain size distribution of the as-sputtered films. A JEOL 3000F high resolution TEM was used to characterize the microstructure.

In this work, we report the directed self organization of multilayer thin film devices with colloidal nanoparticles through Layer-by-Layer (LbL) technique [1]. Self-organization of nanoparticles into assemblies to create novel nanostructures is getting increasing research attention in microelectronics, medical, energy and environmental applications. Directed self-organization of nanoparticles [2] into multilayer thin films were achieved by LbL growth through the interaction of oppositely charged of colloidal nanoparticles on substrates of any kind and shapes. Multilayer thin film devices were fabricated using multilayers of gold (conducting) nanoparticles separated by a dielectric nanoparticulate layer of zinc sulphide. The thin films obtained have been studied extensively and the changes in surface morphology, the optical absorption characteristics, thickness, uniformity, adhesion, and conduction behavior are reported. Current voltage (I-V) characteristics of multilayer devices with an increasing number of deposition cycles show an initial current blockade until an onset voltage value, which increases linearly upon the additional layers stacked in devices [3]. A conductive behavior of the device was observed upon exceeding the onset voltage. Moreover, I-V behavior showed that the conduction onset voltage increases linearly depending on the numbers of layers in the final device controlled by the deposition cycles. Systematic I-V characteristics in the forward and reverse biased conditions demonstrated rectifying behaviors in the onset of conduction voltage which makes these films attractive for future electronic device applications.

ABSTRACTA 2D analytic result is presented for the penetration distance P of grain boundary grooves as a function of time t during heating and straining of polycrystalline multilayer thin films with immiscible phases. These grooves can ultimately pinch off individual layers. The result shows that P ∼ t0.25 initially and P ∼ t at longer time. This new analysis contrasts single- versus multilayer thin film response.

PurposeThis paper aims to numerically investigate the two-dimensional unsteady laminar magnetohydrodynamic bioconvection flow and heat transfer of an electrically conducting non-Newtonian Casson thin film with uniform thickness over a horizontal elastic sheet emerging from a slit in the presence of viscous dissipation. The composite effects of variable heat, mass, nanoparticle volume fraction and gyrotactic micro-organism flux are considered as is hydrodynamic (wall) slip. The Buongiorno nanoscale model is deployed which features Brownian motion and thermophoresis effects. The model studies the manufacturing fluid dynamics of smart magnetic bio-nano-polymer coatings.Design/methodology/approachThe coupled non-linear partial differential boundary-layer equations governing the flow, heat and nano-particle and micro-organism mass transfer are reduced to a set of coupled non-dimensional equations using the appropriate transformations and then solved as an nonlinear boundary value problem with the semi-numerical Liao homotopy analysis method (HAM).Validation with a generalized differential quadrature (GDQ) numerical technique is included.FindingsAn increase in velocity slip results in a significant decrement in skin friction coefficient and Sherwood number, whereas it generates a substantial enhancement in Nusselt number and motile micro-organism number density. The computations reveal that the bioconvection Schmidt number decreases the micro-organism concentration and boundary-layer thickness which is attributable to a rise in viscous diffusion rate. Increasing bioconvection Péclet number substantially elevates the temperatures in the regime, thermal boundary layer thickness, nanoparticle concentration values and nano-particle species boundary layer thickness. The computations demonstrate the excellent versatility of HAM and GDQ in solving nonlinear multi-physical nano-bioconvection flows in thermal sciences and furthermore are relevant to application in the synthesis of smart biopolymers, microbial fuel cell coatings, etc.Research limitations/implicationsThe numerical study is valid for two-dimensional, unsteady, laminar Casson film flow with nanoparticles over an elastic sheet in presence of variable heat, mass and nanoparticle volume fraction flux. The film has uniform thickness and flow is transpiring from slit which is fixed at origin.Social implicationsThe study has significant applications in the manufacturing dynamics of nano-bio-polymers and the magnetic field control of materials processing systems. Furthermore, it is relevant to application in the synthesis of smart biopolymers, microbial fuel cell coatings, etc.Originality/valueThe originality of the study is to address the simultaneous effects of unsteady and variable surface fluxes on Casson nanofluid transport of gyrotactic bio-convection thin film over a stretching sheet in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. Validation of HAM with a GDQ numerical technique is included. The present numerical approaches (HAM and GDQ) offer excellent promise in simulating such multi-physical problems of interest in thermal thin film rheological fluid dynamics.

ITO monolayer and ITO/Ag/ITO multilayer thin films are prepared by D.C. magnetron sputtering method, optical and electrical properties were estimated with different crystalline properties and microstructures. The coated Ag layer thickness was around 50 , and the surface of ITO/Ag/ITO thin film had the very fine island morphology. The growth of columnar phase was inhibited, and most of phases were amorphous. The carrier concentration increased above 10 times because of the effect of Ag layer, and the observed sheet resistance gave much lower value of below 4 / compared to that of coated crystalline ITO thin film that was 10 / , and the transmittance was 80%.

Generally, processing of thin films involves several annealing steps in addition to the deposition step. During the annealing steps, diffusion, transformations and reactions take place. In this paper, examples of the use of TEM and AEM for ex situ and in situ studies of reactions and phase transformations in thin films will be presented. The ex situ studies were carried out on Nb/Al multilayer thin films annealed to different stages of reaction. Figure 1 shows a multilayer with dNb = 383 and dAl = 117 nm annealed at 750°C for 4 hours. As can be seen in the micrograph, there are four phases, Nb/Nb3-xAl/Nb2-xAl/NbAl3, present in the film at this stage of the reaction. The composition of each of the four regions marked 1-4 was obtained by EDX analysis. The absolute concentration in each region could not be determined due to the lack of thickness and geometry parameters that were required to make the necessary absorption and fluorescence corrections.

For heteroepitaxial systems, such as silicon on sapphire (SOS), microtwins occur in significant numbers and are thought to contribute to strain relief in the silicon thin film. The size of this contribution can be assessed from TEM measurements, of the differential volume fraction of microtwins, dV/dν (the derivative of the microtwin volume V with respect to the film volume ν), for SOS grown by both chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE).In a (001) silicon thin film subjected to compressive stress along the [100] axis , this stress can be relieved by four twinning systems: a/6[211]/( lll), a/6(21l]/(l1l), a/6[21l] /( l1l), and a/6(2ll)/(1ll).3 For the a/6[211]/(1ll) system, the glide of a single a/6[2ll] twinning partial dislocation draws the two halves of the crystal, separated by the microtwin, closer together by a/3.
