ABSTRACTThe compounds La1−xBaxTiO3 (0 ≤ × ≤ 1) have been prepared by arc melting stoichiometric amounts of LaTiO3 and BaTiO3. Single phase samples can be made for the entire stoichiometry range. The polycrystalline samples have been characterized by thermal gravimetric analysis, X-ray powder diffraction, and temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility. This series of compounds has been studied as a possible candidate for an early transition metal superconductor.

AbstractSingle-phase samples of T12Ba2CaCu2O8 and T12Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 have been prepared using a reliable and simple synthetic method. Samples were characterized by x-ray powder diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and four probe resistivity methods. The TcR=0 values for T12Ba2CaCu2O8 ranged from 100 to 105K, whereas those for T12Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 ranged from 96 to 107K. The relationship between the superconducting properties and the various preparation conditions are discussed.

The ternary antimonides RE4T7Sb6 (RE=Gd-Lu; T =Ru, Rh) have been synthesized from the elements by arc-melting and subsequent annealing in an induction furnace. The samples have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction. Four structures were refined on the basis of single-crystal X-ray diffractometer data: U4Re7Si6 type, space group Im3m with a=862.9(2) pm, wR2=0.0296, 163 F2 values for Er4Ru7Sb6; a=864.1(1) pm, wR2=0.1423, 153 F2 values for Yb4Ru7Sb6; a=872.0(2) pm, wR2=0.0427, 172 F2 values for Tb4Rh7Sb6; and a=868.0(2) pm, wR2=0.0529, 154 F2 values for Er4Rh7Sb6, with 10 variables per refinement. The structures have T1@Sb6 octahedra and slightly distorted RE@T26Sb6 cuboctahedra as building units. The distorted cuboctahedra are condensed via all trapezoidal faces, and this network leaves octahedral voids for the T1 atoms. The ruthenium-based series of compounds was studied by temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements. Lu4Ru7Sb6 is Pauli-paramagnetic. The antimonides RE4Ru7Sb6 with RE=Dy, Ho, Er, and Tm show Curie-Weiss paramagnetism. Antiferromagnetic ordering occurs at 10.0(5), 5.1(5) and 4.0(5) K for Dy4Ru7Sb6, Ho4Ru7Sb6 and Er4Ru7Sb6, respectively, while Tm4Ru7Sb6 remains paramagnetic. Yb4Ru7Sb6 is an intermediate-valent compound with a reduced magnetic moment of 3.71(1) μB per Yb as compared to 4.54 μB for a free Yb3+ ion

We report here normal and superconducting properties of ABa 2 Cu 3 O 7−δ (with A=Y, Gd, Dy, and Er) and of Fe doped YBa2Cu3O7−δ . Results from X-ray powder diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, ESR, and specific heat measurements are presented, leading to a characterization of the magnetic properties of these materials. The effect of structural modifications of the lattice on the superconducting properties and the relative insensitivity of Tc to the presence of magnetic moments is discussed.

The electrical and magnetic properties of ( Y 1-x-y Zr x Ca y) Ba 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ ceramics are investigated by using resistivity, ac and dc susceptibility measurements. X-ray powder diffraction has been used to find the lattice parameters of the samples. The samples are orthorhombic, except the sample with x=0.15 and y=0.2 which is tetragonal. All the samples are superconducting. There is no significant change in Tc for the Zr-doped ( Y 1-x Zr x) Ba 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ samples, while for the ( Y 0.85-y Zr 0.15 Ca y) Ba 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ compounds the Tc decrease with the dopant content and they show temperature dependent dc magnetic susceptibility, in the normal state.

ABSTRACTNiB, monoclinic Ni4B3, Ni2B and Ni3B were prepared by arc-melting and their roomtemperature crystal structures were refined by Rietveld analysis of neutron powder diffraction data. The NiB refinement is altogether new data. Although the B atoms in NiB form characteristic zigzag chains, the primary coordination of each atom by atoms of the other kind is similar and distinctively sevenfold, with one short (2.117 Å), two intermediate (2.152 Å), and four long (2.163 Å) bonds. Other samples with stoichiometries (YC)nNi2B2, n = 3, 4, did not yield single-phase material, but both x-ray and neutron powder diffraction suggest that the n = 4 structure is present in both of these samples. Phase-pure samples of these homologues may require non-stoichiometry and a more controlled thermal history than is attainable by arc melting.

AbstractThe plumbides RE2Rh2Pb (RE = La–Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb) were synthesized in sealed niobium ampoules by induction melting of the pure elements or directly via arc-melting. The characterization of the samples by X-ray powder diffraction confirmed their Mo2B2Fe-type structure (space group P4/mbm) at room temperature. The Sm2Rh1.924Pb structure was refined from single-crystal X-ray diffractometer data: a=760.02(5), c=378.20(3) pm, wR=0.0387, 292 F2 values, 13 variables. The rhodium site shows small defects. The RE2Rh2Pb plumbides are simple 1:1 intergrowth structures of AlB2 and CsCl related slabs of compositions RERh2 and REPb. The Rh2 dumbbell in the SmRh2 slab of Sm2Rh2Pb shows a Rh–Rh distance of 281 pm. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements of La2Rh2Pb, Pr2Rh2Pb and Nd2Rh2Pb showed that the rhodium atoms carry no localized magnetic moments. La2Rh2Pb exhibits Pauli-paramagnetic behavior induced by the conduction electrons. The ground state of the praseodymium compound is ferromagnetic below TC=3.3 K while the neodymium compound shows a transition to an antiferromagnetic state at TN=6.1 K and a metamagnetic transition at a critical field of ca. 1000 Oe.

A new interesting class of linear unsaturated polycarbonates based on 3,5-bis(p-hydroxybenzylidene)-isopropylpiperidinone (T), 3,5-divanillylidene isopropylpiperidinone (IT), or 3,5-bis(m-hydroxybenzylidene)-isopropylpiperidinone (III) have been synthesized. An interfacial phosgenation technique carried out at ambient temperature was used for the synthesis of the polycarbonates. The resulting polycarbonates were characterized by elemental analyses, infrared spectroscopy, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectral analysis, solubility and viscometry. The thermal behaviour of the synthesized polymers was evaluated by thermal gravimetric analysis and correlated with their structures. The crystallinity of all polymers was examined by x-ray diffraction analysis.
