This paper reports the dependences that have been derived to determine the effective width of a free flange in a dangerous cross-section of the wide-flange hull girder with the breaking of the wall/edges/axis at elastic-plastic deformation depending on the applied load for a perfectly plastic material without strengthening. Currently, there are no systematic dependences to determine the effective width of the free flange of girders of this type, except for certain cases. The technique is suitable for use for both purely elastic and elastic-plastic deformation. To calculate the stressed-strained state (SSS), a finite-element method (FEM) was used to solve the three-dimensional problem from the elasticity and plasticity theory. It has been shown that the node is exposed to simple loading. The reported results were derived within the framework of the deformation theory of plasticity. The largest ratio of external load to the boundary of fluidity is 0.9. The estimation scheme takes into consideration the most unfavorable working conditions of the examined node when the safest data are acquired. The dependences were built for the theoretical coefficient of concentration in a dangerous cross-section, which is used in the proposed procedure to determine the moment of transition from the elastic stage of deformation to elastic-plastic. When determining the effective width, the complex work of the flange and its deplanation was taken into consideration by defining the SSS components in the median plane. The feasibility of the idea of designing the SSS components on the inclined plane of a free flange has been proven. In this case, there is practically a (quasi) flat stressed state, suitable for the application of classical methods to determine the effective width. The proposed technique simplifies the calculations of the strength of the examined girder.

Elbow is a type of components widely used in a piping system, and so it is very important to know the plastic carrying capacity of elbow. In this study, the elastic-plastic behavior of elbows with various ratios of t/rm and relative bending radius R/rm were investigated in detail by using of three-dimensional (3D) non-linear finite element (FE) analyses, assuming elastic-perfectly-plastic material behaviour and taking geometric nonlinearity into account. The analyses indicated that elbow exhibited different behavior obviously at the elastic-plastic states subjected to In-Plane opening bending moment and closing bending moment. The closed form equations of elbow involving effect of tangent pipes were established.

The article deals with the elastic-plastic state of inhomogeneous array with a spherical cavity. Model is used thick-walled ball of an elastic-perfectly plastic material (Prandtl diagram). It is shown that in the inhomogeneous material, depending on the inhomogeneity functions describing the change of the modulus of elasticity and yield stress of soil plastic deformation may appear on both the inner and outer surface of the ball and inside it. Are found values of the limit loads, displacement diagrams are constructed in an array.

Modern polishing, precision machining and microindentation techniques allow the processing and mechanical characterization of ceramics at nanometric scales and within entirely plastic deformation regimes. The mechanical response of most ceramics to such highly constrained contact is not predictable from macroscopic properties and the microstructural deformation patterns have proven difficult to characterize by the application of any individual technique. In this study, TEM techniques of contrast analysis and CBED are combined with stereographic analysis to construct a three-dimensional microstructure deformation map of the surface of a perfectly plastic microindentation on macroscopically brittle aluminum nitride. The bright field image in Figure 1 shows a lg Vickers microindentation contained within a single AlN grain far from any boundaries. High densities of dislocations are evident, particularly near facet edges but are not individually resolvable. The prominent bend contours also indicate the severity of plastic deformation. Figure 2 is a selected area diffraction pattern covering the entire indentation area.

Wheel and rail in service undergo continual wear and plastic deformation at the surface, so that in time all wheel profiles will be different. The optimization by grinding a worn rail profile to minimize contact stresses requires the development of a software to reconstruct a rail profile using circular arcs. A working algorithm, able to be incorporated into a computer code, has been developed to solve the stress state in the general case of non-Hertzian contacts. To limit the pressure, an elastic-perfect plastic material has been incorporated into the computer code. The pressure distribution and the corresponding stresses states have been investigated for pure normal loadings, as well as for the combined, normal and tangential loadings. The elastic-plastic analysis model allows fast investigations regarding the influence of different parameters such as load level, contact geometry including the geometry of the worn profiles.

In the past, shakedown evaluation was usually based on the elastic method that the sum of the primary and secondary stress should be limited to 3Sm or the simplified elastic-plastic analysis method. The elastic method is just an approximate analysis, and the rigorous evaluation of shakedown normally requires an elastic-plastic analysis. In this paper, using an elastic perfectly plastic material model, the shakedown analysis was performed by a series of elastic-plastic analyses. Taking a shell with a nozzle subjected to parameterized temperature loads as an example, the impact of temperature change on the shakedown load was discussed and the shakedown loads of this structure at different temperature change rates were also obtained. This study can provide helpful references for engineering design.

Abstract An economical method to protect offshore pipelines against corrosive ingredients of hydrocarbons is a double-walled (also called “lined” or “bi-metallic”) pipe, in which a thick-walled low-alloy carbon steel (“outer pipe”) is lined internally with a thin layer (“liner pipe”) from a corrosion resistant alloy material. During the deep-water installation, a lined pipe is subjected to severe plastic loading, which may result in detachment of the liner pipe from the outer pipe forming short-wave wrinkles, followed by local buckling. In the current study, alternative lined pipe manufacturing processes are investigated, including elastic, plastic hydraulic and thermo-hydraulic expansion of the outer pipe, for different initial gaps between the two pipes. The problem is solved numerically, accounting for geometric non-linearities, local buckling phenomena and elastic-plastic material behaviour for both the liner and outer pipe. Two types of numerical models are developed, a quasi-two-dimensional model, examining the mechanical bonding between the pipes, and a three-dimensional model, repeating the manufacturing process and investigating its effect on the mechanical behaviour of a lined pipe subjected to monotonic bending. In addition, the influence of initial geometric imperfections on liner pipe buckling is investigated, showing the imperfection sensitivity of the lined pipe bending behaviour, for each fabrication process.

A numerical three-dimensional contact model is presented to investigate the contact behavior of multilayered elastic-perfectly plastic solids with rough surfaces. The surface displacement and contact pressure distributions are obtained based on the variational principle with fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based scheme. Von Mises yield criterion is used to determine the onset of yield. The effective hardness is modeled and plays role when the local displacement meet the maximum displacement criterion. Simulations are performed to obtain the contact pressures, fractional total contact area, fractional plastic contact area, and surface/subsurface stresses. These contact statistics are analyzed to study the effects of the layer-to-substrate ratios of stiffness and hardness, surface roughness, and layers thickness of rough, two-layered elastic/plastic solids. The results yield insight into the effects of stiffness and hardness of layers and substrates, surface roughness, and applied load on the contact performance. The layer parameters leading to low friction, stiction, and wear are investigated and identified.

It is shown that initial and boundary-value problems involving high-speed elastic-plastic deformation with spherical symmetry can be solved using a finite-difference numerical technique. Numerical solutions for the dynamic expansion of a spherical cavity under a constant pressure are presented to demonstrate the nature and capability of the numerical scheme. While the solution for an elastic material agrees closely with the exact one, the solution for an elastic, perfectly plastic material also receives support from Green’s analytic predictions concerning the motion of the elastic-plastic boundary. At large times, the asymptotic solution of the dynamic elastic-plastic problem is different from the quasi-static solution. This result indicates that the concept of quasi-static approximation may not hold in dynamic plasticity. A nonlinear dependence of the plastic solution on the boundary condition is also observed.
