Free vibration and buckling of three-phase bidirectional functionally graded sandwich (BFGSW) plates are studied in this paper for the first time by using an efficient nine-node quadrilateral (Q9) element. The core of the sandwich plates is pure ceramic, while the two skin layers are of a three-phase bidirectional functionally graded material. The element is derived on the basis of the Mindlin plate theory and linked interpolations. Fundamental frequencies and buckling loads are computed for the plates with various boundary conditions. Numerical result shows that convergence of the linked interpolation element is faster compared to the conventional Lagrangian interpolation Q9 element. Numerical investigations are carried out to highlight the influence of the material gradation and the side-to-thickness ratio on the vibration and buckling behaviour of the plates.

This paper presents a two-variable refined plate theory for free vibration of functionally graded material (FGM) plates lying on viscoelastic Winkler–Pasternak foundations. The present work aims to examine the vibrations by a higher-order shear deformation theory including a new function of warping. The governing equations are derived from the principle of virtual displacements. Some illustrative examples are given in an attempt to solve the free vibration problem of a rectangular plate with various boundary conditions. The effects of damping on free vibrations, considering various parameters, are examined in detail. In the end, it is concluded that the present results with the new shear shape function of viscoelastic foundation are found to be in good agreement with other available results and the proposed method can easily be used to solve free vibration problems of the FGM plates.

AbstractThis paper deals with the static response of simply supported functionally graded material (FGM) viscoelastic sandwich plates subjected to transverse uniform loads. The FG sandwich plates are considered to be resting on Pasternak's elastic foundations. The sandwich plate is assumed to consist of a fully elastic core sandwiched by elastic-viscoelastic FGM layers. Material properties are graded according to a power-law variation from the interfaces to the faces of the plate. The equilibrium equations of the FG sandwich plate are given based on a trigonometric shear deformation plate theory. Using Illyushin's method, the governing equations of the viscoelastic sandwich plate can be solved. Parametric study on the bending analysis of FG sandwich plates is being investigated. These parameters include (i) power-law index, (ii) plate aspect ratio, (iii) side-to-thickness ratio, (iv) loading type, (v) foundation stiffnesses, and (vi) time parameter.

Many review articles were published on free vibration and buckling of laminated composites, sandwich plates, and shells. The present article reviews the literature on the buckling and free vibration analysis of shear deformable isotropic and laminated composite sandwich plates and shells using various methods available for plates in the past few decades. Various theories, finite element modeling, and experimentations have been reported for the analysis of sandwich plates and shells. Few papers on functionally graded material plates, plates with smart skin (electrorheological, magnetorheological, and piezoelectric), and also viscoelastic materials were also reviewed. The scope for future research on sandwich plates and shells was also accessed.

A cell-based smoothed three-node Mindlin plate element (CS-MIN3) was recently proposed and proven to be robust for static and free vibration analyses of Mindlin plates. The method improves significantly the accuracy of the solution due to softening effect of the cell-based strain smoothing technique. In addition, it is very flexible to apply for arbitrary complicated geometric domains due to using only three-node triangular elements which can be easily generated automatically. However so far, the CS-MIN3 has been only developed for isotropic material and for analyzing intact structures without possessing internal cracks. The paper hence tries to extend the CS-MIN3 by integrating itself with functionally graded material (FGM) and enriched functions of the extended finite element method (XFEM) to give a so-called extended cell-based smoothed three-node Mindlin plate (XCS-MIN3) for free vibration analysis of cracked FGM plates. Three numerical examples with different conditions are solved and compared with previous published results to illustrate the accuracy and reliability of the XCS-MIN3 for free vibration analysis of cracked FGM plates.

In this study, a new shear deformation plate theory is introduced to illustrate the bending, buckling and free vibration responses of functionally graded material sandwich plates. A new displacement field containing integrals is proposed which involves only four variables. Based on the suggested theory, the equations of motion are derived from Hamilton’s principle. This theory involves only four unknown functions and accounts for quasi-parabolic distribution of transverse shear stress. In addition, the transverse shear stresses are vanished at the top and bottom surfaces of the sandwich plate. The Navier solution technique is adopted to derive analytical solutions for simply supported rectangular sandwich plates. The accuracy and effectiveness of proposed model are verified by comparison with previous research. A detailed numerical study is carried out to examine the influence of the critical buckling loads, deflections, stresses, natural frequencies and sandwich plate type on the bending, buckling and free vibration responses of functionally graded sandwich plates.

In this paper, thermoelastic damping (TED) in a simply supported rectangular functionally graded material (FGM) micro plate with continuous variation of the material properties along the thickness direction is performed. The equations of motion and the heat conduction equation coupled with the thermal effects are derived based on the Mindlin plate theory and the one-way coupled heat conduction theory, respectively. The heat conduction equation with variable coefficients is solved by using the layer-wise homogenization approach. Analytical solution of TED is obtained by complex frequency method. Numerical results of TED are presented for the rectangular FGM micro plate made of ceramic-metal constituents with the power-law gradient profile. The effects of the shear deformation, the material gradient index, the plate thickness on the TED of the FGM micro plate are studied.
