Land ownership and its persistent gap between rich and poor is one of the pressing development challenges in Africa. Access to land has fundamental implications for a poor and agrarian African economy like Ethiopia, where most people depend on agriculture for their livelihood. Empirical literatures suggest that access to land is a cause and effect of poverty—at the same time, the role of poverty status of the household in gaining or limiting access to land has received only a passing attention from researchers. This study investigates the effect of ‘being poor’ on access to land using ordered probit and censored tobit models. Three wave panel data of Ethiopian Rural Socioeconomic Survey (ERSS) collected between 2011–12 and 2015–16 are used for the analysis. The study result confirms that poverty does have significant effect on household’s participation and intensity of participation on both sides of the rental market. It is found that being poor, as compared to non-poor counterpart, leads to an increase in the likelihood of rent-in land by 0.068 hectare and reduce the likelihood of rent-out land by 0.046 hectare at 1% and 5% significance levels, respectively. The tenants are not characterised as economically disadvantaged reflecting the existence of reverse tenancy among rural poor in Ethiopia.

Rural areas in Romania are underdeveloped, with the main economic activity being agriculture. Urban-rural income gap and poverty levels are indicative of an underdeveloped rural area. Urban-rural absolute income gap for average monthly income increased from 352 RON in 2007 to 663 RON in 2017. Moreover, the work poverty rate is higher in rural areas than in urban areas. Economic rural development can be achieved by improvements of the labour market and introduction of new value-added products. Agricultural and non-agricultural activities are dependent on each other for a successful rural development leading to poverty alleviation. An industry that combines the two types of economic activities is agriculture biomaterial industry. In this paper, the authos investigates the factors influencing rural poverty and analyses the current stage of the bioplastics market in Romania and its economic implications. Bioplastics industry can reduce urban-rural income gaps and poverty in rural areas.

Abstract Following Peacock and Musgrave’s rediscovery of Wagner’s Law, the latter became a standard tool used in research on the relationship between growth of public spending and the factors by which it is influenced. However, conventional empirical tests are based on a specification error related to Wagner’s definition of the public sector, which he considered in its totality, including public companies. The present article attempts to correct this error and obtain an approximation to the size of the public sector by considering public employment as a whole, both in public administrations and services and in public companies. To this end, panel data for the Spanish autonomous regions are used in addition to data for the overall public sector. The empirical test is performed utilizing cointegration techniques and unit roots in panel data. Similarly, the possibility of structural breaks in the data is taken into consideration and they are estimated using fictitious variables. JEL classifications: H11; H50; E62 Keywords: public employment; gross domestic product; unit root; cointegration; panel data

This chapter provides a broad overview of the agricultural sector and helps situate the narrower focus in each of the subsequent chapters of Part II of the book. Ghana’s agriculture has performed reasonably well since the 1980s in terms of its growth, labor productivity, farm incomes, and the decline in rural poverty. It then provides a description of the main features of the agricultural transformation that has occurred, and explains three drivers underlying these patterns: the policy environment; growing population pressure on the land base; and rapid urbanization. The chapter also identifies how agricultural transformation is progressing differently in the northern and southern regions of the country. In the former, substantial increases in farm production and incomes has come more from increases in the cropped area and crop mix than from increased yields. Land productivity has increased only modestly, but labor productivity has increased substantially in line with wages. In the latter, farm households have taken advantage of urban–rural linkages to diversify into nonagricultural sources of income, and farms have become smaller and more part-time. Despite having greater access to urban markets, services, infrastructure and an increasing population pressure on the land base, there is little evidence of agricultural intensification leading to higher land productivity in these areas.

on the basis of the definition of technological innovation and efficiency, based on the DEA method, this paper takes the panel data of 20 listed companies in China's machinery manufacturing industry from 2011 to 2015 as samples, evaluating the technological innovation efficiency of listed companies in China's machinery manufacturing industry. Finally, it sums up and puts forward effective countermeasures to improve the technological innovation of listed companies in China's machinery manufacturing industry. It is hoped that it will play a guiding role in the technological innovation activities of listed companies in China's machinery manufacturing industry.
