The present investigation was conducted on heterosis for fruit yield quality attributing characters in okra. Fifteen F1 hybrids were generated by half diallel (excluding reciprocals) mating design. These F1 hybrids along with six parents were evaluated in Randomized Block Design with three replications during late Rabi season of 2018 at three locations HRS, Lam; KVK, V.R.Gudem and KVK, Vonipenta, Andhra Pradesh. Observations were recorded for five randomly selected and tagged plants from each treatment for fruit yield and quality attributing characters viz., number of fruits per plant, fruit length (cm), fruit girth (cm), fruit weight (g), number of seeds per fruit, test weight (g/100), fruit yield per plant (g), fruit yield per hectare (t), fibre content (%), ascorbic acid content (mg/100g) and shelf life (days). The values of F1 hybrids averaged over three replications were used for estimating heterosis and pooled data was obtained. The top five heterotic cross combinations viz., 440-10-1 x HRB-9-2, VRO-6 x HRB-9-2, TCR-1674 x HRB-9-2, VRO-6 x JPM-20-16-39 and VRO-3 x HRB-9-2 were identified as stable with desirable heterosis for fruit yield and other important traits.

Cucumber production in Kenya is faced with a number of challenges that include nematode infestation, low yield and quality of the crop resulting into low returns. In an effort to solve some of these challenges, a study was conducted to ascertain the effects of farmyard manure on nematode infestation, yield and quality of cucumber at Rongo University School of Agriculture Research Farm from July to October 2017 and repeated from October 2017 to January 2018. Three seeds of cucumber ‘Ashley’ were sown directly in 3.5-liter plastic pots containing 8 kg of sterilized air dried growth medium made up of sand and top soil in the ratio of 1:2 respectively. The treatments were four levels of cattle manure 0 (control), 7.5, 11.3 and 15 ton/ha. Each pot was then inoculated with 5 juvenile root knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp). The experiment was performed under completely randomized block design with three replications. Data was collected on yield, quality and nematode population dynamics and then subjected to Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at P≤0.05. The Number of fruits per vine, number of deformed fruits per vine, fruit weight, length, diameter, firmness and TSS were significantly affected by FYM application. FYM also affected the number of root galls and nematode population.

The present experiment on bhendi consisted of 12 parents (9 lines and 3 testers) with their 27 F1 hybrids developed through line x tester mating design with three replications in randomized block design. Parents and hybrids differed significantly for gca and sca effects, respectively. Among the parents, maximum gca effect was found in EC 169329 and Aruna for fruit length, EC 102605 and Arka Anamika for fruit girth, EC 112241 and Arka Anamika for fruit yield per plant, EC 169335 and Aruna for ascorbic acid content, EC 109454 and Arka Anamika for mucilage content. The crosses EC 169331 x Kashi Kranti, EC 102605 x Arka Anamika and EC 169344 x Arka Anamika were found as good specific combiners for fruit length, fruit girth and yield per plant respectively. The hybrids EC 169335 x Aruna and EC 109454 x Arka Anamika exhibited maximum significant positive sca effects for quality traits like ascorbic acid content and mucilage content respectively.

The present investigation “Influence of liquid and carrier based biofertilizers on growth, yield and quality of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.)”was laid out in randomized block design with two factors and three levels comprising of nine treatment combinations in three replications at Horticultural Research Station, Dr. Y.S.R. Horticultural University, Venkataramannagudem, West Godavari during Rabi, 2018. The application of 80 % recommended dose of fertilizers along with liquid biofertilizers resulted in significant higher differences in number of fruits per cluster (4.90), number of fruits per plant (60.0), fruit set % (98.34), fruit length (5.83 cm), fruit width (5.45 cm), average fruit weight (96.96 g), fruit yield per plant (7.27 kg), TSS (4.670 Brix), ascorbic acid content (16.53 mg/100 g), lycopene content (31.72 mg/100g) and titrable acidity (0.53 %) when compared to other treatment combinations.

Estimation the magnitude of heterosis for yield and yield contributing parameters of Okra was conducted. Fifty-four F1 hybrids were generated by line x tester mating design. These F1s along with 21 parents and commercial check (Mhyco-10) were evaluated in a randomized block design with two replications. Analysis of variance with respect to yield and quality characters in parents and hybrids were highly significant. This indicates the existence of high variation in parents and hybrids for different characters studied. Out of 54 cross combinations, seven crosses revealed the significant and positive heterosis over better parent. While 11 crosses showed positive and significant heterosis over economic parent. It is pertinent to mention that the crop has potential to produce the heterotic cross combinations and such crosses can be used for further improvement of this crop. Five crosses, namely L43 × T44, L22 × T36, L22 × T44, L53 × T36 and L31 × T23 were found to be potential for the production of fruit yield per plant and other desired characters. The high heterosis and per se performance was found in hybrid L43 × T44 over both better parents and standard check for fruit yield per plant. The crosses exhibited maximum positive significant sca effect was observed in EC 112241 x Aruna, EC 109454 x Kashi Kranti and EC 112264 x Aruna were found as good specific combiners for single fruit weight, number of branches per plant and number of fruits per plant respectively. The hybrid EC 112264 x Aruna exhibited maximum significant negative sca effects for inter node distance and plant height at final harvest.

Inorganic fertilizers alone cannot sustain high levels of productivity. It may cause deterioration of soil environment leading to low productivity. An investigation was carried out to develop integrated nutrient management technology for fruit yield of bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). The experiment was conducted at Horticulture Research Division, Nepal Agricultural Research Council Khumaltar, Lalitpur during 2010/011. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with three replications and having seven treatments viz., Control (100% NPK), Azotobacter + 25% N + PK, Azotobacter + 50% N + PK, Azotobacter + 75% N + PK, Azotobacter + FYM + 25% N + PK, Azotobacter + FYM + 50% N + PK, Azotobacter + FYM + 75% N + PK. Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of foliar application of Ascophyllum nodosum extract, homobrassinolide, and triacontanol for improving fruit retention, yield, and quality in mango. Methodology: The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with 10 treatments, comprising Ascophyllum nodosum extract (1000, 3000, and 5000 ppm), homobrassinolide (0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 ppm), triacontanol (1, 3, and 5 ppm), and water as control. Treatments were foliar sprayed at panicle initiation, pea, and marble stages of fruit growth. Observations were recorded on flowering, fruiting, yield, and fruit quality parameters. Results: All the treatments of Ascophyllum nodosum extract and triacontanol exhibited significant improvement in fruit retention, fruit weight, yield, and fruit quality parameters over control. However, 3000 and 5000 ppm Ascophyllum nodosum extract treatments outperformed all the treatments of triacontanol. Plants sprayed with 5000 ppm Ascophyllum nodosum extract recorded the maximum value for fruit retention (48.15, 36.74, 29.48, and 25.76% at 3, 6, 9, and 12 weeks after pea stage, respectively), number of fruits (133.25 per tree), fruit weight (188.84 g per fruit), and yield (25.16 kg per tree), whereas the lowest values were recorded under control. With respect to fruit quality, 3000 ppm ANE produced the fruits with the highest TSS (19.62 °B), whereas the highest TSS/acid ratio was recorded with 5000 ppm ANE (62.29) treatment. Interpretation: In mango, foliar application of Ascophyllum nodosum extract (3000-5000 ppm) thrice at panicle initiation, pea, and marble stages of fruit growth is effective for reducing fruit drop and enhancing quantum and quality of produce.

Oyster mushroom was a prospective vegetable commodity and has high economical value. The aim of this research was to find out oyster mushroom varieties that could be adapted in Bogor – West Java, and produced high yield and quality when cultivated both in the dry and rainy seasons. A Randomized Block Design with 4 replications were set up in mushroom houses during the dry and the rainy seasons. Treatments comprised of 6 varieties of oyster mushrooms, viz: varieties No. 1; 30; 37; 38; 46 (origin from IVEGRI’s collection) and No. 85 (origin from Bogor as control variety). The result showed that varieties and planting seasons has significantly effect on growth of oyster mushroom. However varieties has no significantly effect on yield of mushroom which was in average 55-91 ton/1000 m2 of mushrooms house area. Fresh yield of mushroom planted in dry season (91.3 ton) was significantly higher than those in wet season (61.7 ton). Varieties has significantly effect of mushroom quality, meanwhile seasons gave a same good quality with delicious/ ranking <3, storage resistance up to 2 days at room temperature and water content >90 %. Keywords: Planting season, Pleurotus ostreatus, growth, yield, quality

An investigation was carried out during rainy season at the HorticultureResearch Farm, Department of Horticulture, Institute of Agriculture Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. The investigation comprised ten treatments viz.,three levels each of gibberellic acid GA3 (50, 75 and 100 ppm), cytokinin (50, 75 and 100 ppm) and NAA (50, 75 and 100 ppm) along with control (distilled water) were applied as foliar application at 30 and 40 days after transplanting. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with three replications. Results revealed that, the minimum number of days (49.97) to 1st edible fruits harvesting was recorded in 100 ppm GA3 which was statistically at par with 75 ppm GA3. The maximum fruit length (13.22 cm), fruit diameter (1.82 cm), number of seeds per fruit (50.13), number of fruits per plant (23.47), fruit yield per plant (354.30 g), highest fruit yield (141.72 q/ha), 100 seed weight (5.18 g), seed yield per plant (47.97 g) and highest seed yield (19.19 q/ha) were recorded with GA3 at 100 ppm. The maximum fresh fruit weight (15.85 g) was recorded in 50 ppm.

ABSTRACT Aiming at the generation of new guava varieties with superior attributes, we conducted this study adopting the REML/BLUP procedure at individual level. Seventeen segregating guava families were evaluated in a randomized-block design with two replicates and 12 plants per plot. Families were obtained after controlled biparental pollination. The studied individuals showed high genotypic variance for fruit weight (FW), total yield (YLD), and ascorbic acid content (AAC). The heritability coefficients of the mean of progenies led to high progeny-selection accuracy for pulp yield (PY), soluble solids content (SSC), in addition to FW, YLD, and AAC; moderate accuracy for fruit acidity (FA) and SSC/FA ratio; and low accuracy for mesocarp thickness (MT) and pH. Selection among families (h2mp) indicated the highest values for FW, PY, YLD, SSC, and AAC, revealing that, for the present study, this practice would be effective, since these traits allowed for the highest selection accuracy values among families. As for the ranking of individuals, families originating from crosses UENF 1835 × UENF 1834, UENF 1831 × UENF 1832, and UENF 1831 × UENF 3739 stood out, occupying the first positions for most traits.
