This study defines translator training as a pedagogical scheme to help learners build up a knowledge network that should sustain their professional competence. It explores specifically how a computer-assisted mode of training may contribute to systemizing such a scheme with special reference to literary translation. The tool used for such training is Textwells, an online translation teaching and learning platform that weaves textual and translation-related concepts, phenomena, and methods as “knowledge nodes” into a network to support teaching and learning in different settings. As such, different from the traditional way of arranging a literary translation course according to the subgenres of literature, this approach, facilitated by the online platform, organizes the teaching contents along a series of knowledge nodes that are deemed fundamental to the production of a literary target text. In particular, this paper gives a detailed report about the course design and teaching procedures, using the rhetoric component as an illustrating case.

Abstract Poetry in general and lyric poetry in particular are perhaps the most difficult types of texts to be rendered from one language into another without much change in meaning and structure. That is why folkloric songs could be considered as toilsome to be rendered, because they are often culture-bound. Moreover, they have a highly complicated sign structure which plays an important role in transmitting culture. It may be helpful and useful to investigate a number of difficulties in translating these rhymed texts which reflect certain aspects of culture (social, political and ecological, among others). Despite the dearth of references, the authors have succeeded in obtaining the necessary data of translating these folkloric songs. They aim to reach modest findings which could be beneficial to students of translation. In this paper, it may be useful to introduce some ideas about the nature of translation and translatability as well as literary translation with special reference to the semantic vs. communicative translation. It also aims to shed light on the translatability of some Jordanian folkloric songs. This study partly provides examples of the authors' translations from Arabic into English, which are only attempts of translating these literary texts. The translations are meant only for the aim of comparison or to support data. Some conclusions and recommendations about the translatability of folkloric songs are reached. Résumé La poésie en général et la poésie lyrique en particulier sont probablement les types de textes les plus difficiles à reproduire d'une langue dans une autre sans introduction de changement de signification ou de structure. C'est la rasion pour laquelle les chants folkloriques, généralement liés à la culture sont difficiles à traduire. De plus, la structure des signes est éminemment compliquée et joue un rôle important au niveau de la transmission de la teneur culturelle. Il peut donc être intéressant et utile d'analyser un certain nombre de difficultés qui surgissent lors de la traduction de ces textes rythmés qui reflètent certains aspects culturels (sociaux, politiques et écologiques, entres autres). En dépit du manque de références, les auteurs sont parvenus à obtenir les informations nécessaires à la traduction de ces chants folkloriques. Leur but est d'obtenir certains indications susceptibles d'être précieuses pour les étudiants en traduction. Dans le présent article, les auteurs ont estimé qu'il pouvait être utile d'introduire certains notions concernant la nature de la traduction et de la traductibilité mais aussi de la traduction littéraire, en particulier dans le domaine de l'opposition traduction sémantique — traduction communicative. Les auteurs souhaitent aussi aborder la traductibilité de certains chants folkloriques jordaniens, et ce à l'aide d'exemples de traductions arabe-anglais réalisées par les auteurs mais qui ne sont d'après ces derniers que des essais de traduction de ces textes littéraires. Ces traductions visent uniquement à comparer les informations ou à fournir des indications utiles. Ce faisant ils sont parvenus à formuler un certain nombre de conclusions et de recommendations concernant la traductibilité des chants folkloriques.

The topic of the present paper concerns cultural translation and focuses on the cross-cultural aspect of pragmatic equivalence. It is based on the hypothesis that the pragmatic framework of the literary work, i.e.  the deliberate choice of  tied verbal actions and the interpretations of these actions, forms  an important slot in the overall structure of cultural context and displays the artistic literary idea of the writer.  Hence the research work clearly shows that literary translation should adequately transmit the intentions and ideas encoded in the original text to the readers from the respective culture. The cross-cultural pragmatic analysis of the speech act sequences and reporting words carried out on the material of a literary work in English and its Armenian translation has enabled us to determine that the violation of pragmatic coherence of the source text distorts the cultural context planned by the author.

Considering the example of the translation of Njegoš’s The Mountain Wreath into the German language, the paper analyses the translational solutions that are dictated by the principles of the subject. The translator Alois Schmaus chose to take this step in order to bring home to the modern reader a world which appears to be archaic. He made this decision for two reasons. First, the German reader is unfamiliar with the historical context that is the subject of this poem; secondly the rules of prosody in Serbian and German do not match. By choosing to carry over the Serbian epic decasyllable, Schmaus favours the Serbian poetic tradition. From the historical point of view German verse, constructed as an Alexandrine, is burdened with the context of courtly poetics. The hexameter, meanwhile, which was introduced into German literature by Klopstock and later popularised by Voss and Goethe, appears in the context of the rise of the bourgeoisie. Both verses require changes while being translated, which affect the poem’s characteristics. In order to maintain authenticity, Schmaus pleads for the “Serbian trochee”: iamb and dactyl, metrical feet that are closer to the German language, would have impeded the setting the diaeresis and affected the syntax. Because of this, Schmaus places a spondee at the end of every verse and sets the historical context in the tradition of martyrdom.

The research focuses on the study of the dynamics of etiquette norms in the innovative communicative space. The paper considers the factors which may condition changes in etiquette norms and stimulate formation of new norms and rules. The contribution explains the importance of taking into account theoretical foundations of etiquette studies while considering innovative norms, and lays special emphasis on comparison of traditional and innovative norms. The article reveals the role of socio-cultural context in the process of implementation of etiquette norms, and outlines the factors which determine the variability of their functioning. The study highlights specific features of innovative etiquette norms: the focus of attention is on etiquette norms regulating behaviour in the online communicative environment – with special reference to business interaction, in particular, business interaction in the format of zoom conferences. The paper suggests classification of innovation norms, outlines etiquette gaps and ways of their elimination. The publication also explains the importance of practical valiability of the study, and accounts for the need in optimization of business etiquette training – with special reference to up-to-date conditions of professional interaction.

This chapter introduces the dimensions of diversity in a cultural context with special reference to IT education. The authors justify that globalization of education in a true sense cannot be achieved only by establishing accessibility and developing cost effective technologies. The debate concerning the influence of IT on the diversity and global culture issues will be colored by how technology is being used. The authors argue that the ideal is not possible within present IT usage unless the underpinning culture of the IT curriculum is acknowledged, openly discussed and adjusted for. They develop a model in phases to discuss the difficulties in engaging the technology and thus finding ways to increase its usage, particularly in the education sector.

Cultural heritage influences every aspect of life. Man has made the masks in dance rituals, dramas, folk songs, temples and different socio-cultural context. The use of masks in rituals or ceremonies is a very ancient human practice across the world. This mask or mukhas are said to be the base of the Assamese culture and tradition. They are worn mostly in bhaonas. Materials like bamboo, cane, cloth, clay etc. are used for making masks. Samaguri Sattra is a place of conservation and retention of vanishing art form of mukha. Sankardeva’s philosophies had transcended the boundaries of religion and culture and hence today Majuli is one place where devotion has mingled with art in a unique way.
