Abstract The purpose of this article is to analyze prescriptions for oral dental inspections officially adopted in primary schools in São Paulo. It investigates official publications that help to read the guidelines given for the inspection, handling and care of children's teeth and mouths within the school space are investigated. It explores the relationship established between teething, school progress, and civilization, as well as the conduct adopted in cases of poor dental condition. Conclusions highlight the good results of problematizing the meanings attributed to the practices of inspection and physical examinations and the approximations made between the school and the scientific discourses elaborated about it.

As of 16 May 2020, the number of confirmed cases and deaths in Brazil due to Covid-19 hit 233,142 and 15,633, respectively, making the country one of the most affected by the pandemic. The State of São Paulo (SSP) hosts the largest number of confirmed cases in Brazil, with over 60,000 cases to date. Here we investigate the spatial distribution and spreading patterns of Covid-19 in the SSP by mapping the spatial autocorrelation and the clustering patterns of the virus in relation to the population density and the number of hospital beds. Clustering analysis indicated that São Paulo City is a significant hotspot for both the confirmed cases and deaths, whereas other cities across the state were less affected. Bivariate Moran’s I showed a low relationship between the number of deaths and population density, whereas the number of hospital beds was less related, implying that the fatality depends substantially on the actual patients’ conditions. Multivariate Local Geary showed a positive relationship between the number of deaths and population density, with two cities near São Paulo City being negatively related; the relationship between the number of deaths and hospital beds availability in the São Paulo Metropolitan Area was basically positive. Social isolation measures throughout the State of São Paulo have been gradually increasing since early March, an action that helped to slow down the emergence of the new confirmed cases, highlighting the importance of the safe-distancing measures in mitigating the local transmission within and between cities in the state.

This paper analyzes the relationship among coffee labor needs, the flow of immigrants to Sao Paulo, and the immigration policies of the state government from the decline of slavery in the 1880s to the onset of the Great Depression. Generally, the study seeks to determine to what degree and by what criteria the immigration program of São Paulo may be considered a “success”. The author uses this, then to help specify the changing relationship between the coffee planters and the state government.

This text consists of a study on representations of rural primary schools in Brazil, especially of the state of São Paulo, in seeking to understand how the images contributed to strengthen the contempt towards rural school and society. The documentary corpus research consists of 199 photographs of rural schools attached to the reports of the Regional Offices of Education, technical inspection bodies of the Department of Education of the State of São Paulo, produced from 1933 to 1943. The photograph analysis focuses on three thematic groups: school building façades, students’ and teachers’ pictures, and school practices.

Air quality monitoring data are useful in different areas of research and have varied applications, especially with a focus on the relationship between air pollution, respiratory problems, and other health hazards. The main atmospheric pollutants are: ozone (O3), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and particulate matter (PM). PM is one of the main objects of study when one intends to protect people from exposure to pollutants. This study contributes to the analysis of PM2.5 in 21 stations in the state of São Paulo monitored by the Environmental Company of São Paulo State (CETESB). It employs cluster analysis, a prominent data mining method for detecting patterns and discovering similarities which is important for assessing air pollution, especially in a geographically vast area such as that of the state of São Paulo, which does not follow a single pattern. Another data mining technique (association rules) supports the analysis of the relationship between pollutants and meteorological variables, as it allows identifying changes between elements that occur together, in a wide variety of data. Our objectives include determining stations with similar behaviors and exploring the temporal variety of the pollutant as it relates to the dominant meteorological factors in the periods of high concentration. The clustering algorithm automatically separates stations according to their monthly averages of PM2.5 concentration between 2017 and 2019. The clusters of stations that showed the highest pollution rates essentially included urban centers with emissions by industries and vehicles, while those with the lowest rates were located further inland. A cyclical behavior in pollutant variation was also observed in the three years under study and for both clusters. For the months with the highest concentration of PM2.5, association rule learning was applied to connect air temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed with PM2.5 and carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations. The obtained results are useful to analyze the temporal and geolocation profiles of pollution by particulate matter, since they identify the behavior of the meteorological factors that predominate in periods of greater concentration.

Abstract: Modernity as well as new ways of experiencing religion in this period, has contributed to the religious subject is organized manner and in different spaces of the traditional. In the Brazilian religious field, this phenomenon can be observed among evangelicals daily, the path of secular work, perform Pentecostal services in railway carriages in the State of São Paulo. This practice has shown the organization of a group expressing their religiosity on a 'no religious place’, regardless of the religious institution to which it belongs, but reproducing ethics Pentecostal public space. In this regard, this communication aims at analyzing the relationship between religion and modernity through the encounter between traditional (Pentecostal ethics) and contemporary (religious worship in urban trains) and the new reworkings of this specific group (Pentecostal) in the Brazilian religious field. Keywords: Identity Pentecostal, No religious Place; Modernity.

Faced with the multiple understandings assumed by different institutions about the concept of Innovation, the need to locate the semantic principles related to this concept was identified, which has ensured that information science (CI) is contemplated by funding agencies in the development of research projects. The objective was to understand the epistemological relationship between innovation and IC in order to construct a semantic indication of both the conceptual compound of innovation according to the logic of the achievement bodies and an indication of what is taken as relevant for funding in development and research by the agency FAPESP (Foundation for the Support of Research of the State of São Paulo, Brazil). It is concluded that since 1992, CI's research projects, subsidized by FAPESP, have had, in a preponderant way, technology (perception of promotion) and interdisciplinarity (communicative efficiency) as determining elements of the relationship of this area with innovation.

AbstractThis article examines the rhetoric and practice of a large social movement organised around low-income housing in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Making explicit the relationship between housing and citizenship, the União de Movimentos de Moradia (Alliance of Housing Movements) articulates a ‘politics of rights’ with which it calls on the state to uphold the constitutional right to housing, and legitimates its high-profile occupations of abandoned buildings in the centre of the city. The article engages with James Holston's historical examination of homeowners’ struggles on the peripheries of São Paulo to assert themselves as rights-holders and to mobilise against threats of eviction. While Holston names these groups of residents ‘insurgent’ citizens for the way they have unsettled entrenched social inequalities, this article presents the concept of ‘transgressive’ citizenship to reflect the challenge the housing movement makes to the state as it uses text-based law to justify building occupations.

Utopia. Dialética. Crítica social. Cultura.  Abstract: This paper presents an approach within the thinking of Ernst Bloch (1885/1977) about the relation between Marxism and Utopia: an unusual link within Marxism, commonly held in an irreconcilable opposition. Hence the appropriation of the term "heretical" in reference to the German author's Marxism: the expression is used not in a pejorative sense, but only to situate its distancing from vulgar Marxism, as well as its intention of a radical critique of this tradition. Here we understand that it is particularly through the relationship between Marxism and Utopia that Ernst Bloch's thought appears as an ineluctably political project with a view to a philosophy of concrete praxis in the principal work of the author: The Principle Hope (Das Prinzip Hoffnung) [1954/1959]. In this book we find, in effect, the attempt to think the actuality of Marxism in the context of the age of catastrophe - as defined by Eric Hobsbawm - that is, the long twentieth century that experienced the extreme barbarism of the concentration camp, of which the thinker in question, Jewish and Communist, managed to escape.  Keywords: Marxism.
